there are three tunnels - one heading under the moat to the extremity of the gardens surrounding the castle (a good escape route), a hidden entrance to the gatehouse, and 14 flights of stairs leading up to the top floor of the south tower through the wall. the south tower is the tower of last resort and will play an important role in roughly a weeks time from when this story starts since Dimon, the garrison commander, who is Princess Regent Cassandra’s long distant cousin with an eligible claim to the throne of Duncan (the currently sick king), Maddie herself and Queen Cassandra were all dead; her grandfather King Duncan told her about them and she went to see Master uldred (the royal librarian) about them, it took her two days to get it. sinister sinister sinister was written on a stone in the wall - 3 left of that block (4th bottom row from the left).
her father Horace (the champion knight of the kingdom), and Gillan (the ranger corps commandant) have gone off to quell a rebellion in the south. the day after this story starts they will be ambushed by the red foxes but Maddie will know nothing about it. they are currently about to cross a river staging a fighting retreat to a hill fort near their location, not realising just yet that they’re being contained deliberately. their archers decimate the enemy every time they make contact.
