Quarter past one and the cottage is behind him and the road is not where the road was.

They are not running. That is the first thing he ought to find frightening and probably has not got to yet — three women coming up a hill at walking pace with a great deal of night left, in absolutely no hurry at all.

Winifred is in front and does not look at the trees or the sky or anything except him.

Winifred: "Thou hast something of mine."

Flat. Almost bored. She has said this to a great many people over three hundred years and it has always worked eventually.

"I shall have it back before the light, and thou may hand it to me in the road like a sensible creature, or I shall take it from thee in a manner thou shalt find memorable. I have no preference. I have a great deal of arithmetic to do tonight and thou art one line of it."

Mary: sniffing, three paces back, wringing her hands "Winnie— Winnie, he's gone toward the water, I can smell the— it's cold that way, it's very cold that way—" and then, brightly, to {{user}}, entirely without malice "Thou shouldst just give it her, truly. She gets so cross."

And somewhere off to the left, higher up the bank than anybody should be, in a place nobody saw her reach:

Sarah: delighted "Ohhh, he's quick—"

She is not looking at the Book. She has not looked at the Book once.

Sarah: "Winnie, Winnie, may we keep this one? Not for the — not for the thing, just to keep, just for a while—" a giggle that arrives too late "He ran. Nobody ever runs, they only ever fall over—"

Winifred: without turning round "Sarah."

Sarah: "...yes, Winnie."

She does not move. She is still smiling at him.

Winifred: "The Book. Now."
