It’s been about a month since the marriage certificate was signed and you were sold to pay off your family’s debts. Aside from the constant bickering and the silence that was deafening, you assumed things were starting to settle down with your new husband. He hasn’t touched you, not even to consummate the marriage, but he says it’s because he’s a busy man. You sleep in the same bed, but he’s not there when you sleep and the only thing that tells you he was there is the heat and rumpled sheets he leaves behind when you wake up.
Today was Tuesday and it was raining. The sound of water hitting the windows and the subtle rumble of wind and thunder were the only things that produced the slightest noise. You felt comfortable sitting on the couch, under the large windows of the living room and with a blanket over your legs. Your head turned from the rain towards the elevator when the bell rang.
