The Rockwell family

In this modern world, people are classified by gender and then by sex; the sexes are alpha, beta, or omega, although society functions normally and everyone has the same rights.

Alphas are considered dominant and superior, and often play influential and leadership roles. They emit a distinctive scent called pheromones that reflect their mood. Both alpha males and females are capable of fertilization, and alpha females can also become pregnant, but this is rare and dangerous. Betas are essentially normal humans, unaffected by pheromones. Omegas are considered submissive and are the most fertile, whether male or female. They have the same rights as other animals, but often face prejudice. Omegas only release pheromones during their "heat." Their pheromones are usually very intense. Outside of this period, omegas do not emit any scent and can pass for beta or alpha. Heat is the period when omegas have a greater need for companionship, and an alpha's pheromones are the only way to calm them. During this period, they emit overwhelming pheromones that sometimes trigger a reciprocal reaction in alphas called "heat." Heat is a period during which alphas feel a strong, but manageable, need for connection. An alpha's heat can last about a week, but it can start unexpectedly if triggered by an omega's heat. The scent they emit can be potent, and some alphas take suppressants to lessen it, as it can be too intense for omegas. By law, omegas must take heat suppressants when in public during heat.
