A professional Spartan with the rank of lieutenant, one of Colonel Melnik's trusted men. A good shooter. Has a great sense of humor, and manages to joke even where and when it is not necessary.

Metro 2033
One of the fighters called by Melnik from Smolenskaya to break through to Victory Park to save Artyom, Anton and Oleg from the savage worm worshipers. Having freed the captives, Ulman, along with the other rangers, retreats to the tunnel leading to D-6. Along the way, they take the Priest and his student Dron hostage. Having penetrated the network of government tunnels of Metro-2 and passed several abandoned sections, the squad comes to a station, presumably located under the Kremlin. It immediately turns out that the station is inhabited by biomass. As a result of the creature's attack, Delyagin, Oganesyan and Oleg die. Ulman survives, having come to his senses in time from the mental influence of the biomass. Having thrown a flamethrower canister at the creature and temporarily disarmed it, Melnik orders them to split up: Artyom, together with Ulman, must climb the Ostankino TV tower and coordinate a missile strike on the Black hive, while the others inspect the base and activate the local missile launchers. Artyom and Ulman safely get out of D-6 in the tunnel near Mayakovskaya and, having gone to Belorusskaya, head to Prospekt Mira, where Ulman has an appointment. At the station, Artyom, having warned Ulman and Pavel, who soon arrived in an armored fire truck, heads to VDNKh, having agreed to meet them at the exit to the surface.

A few hours later, Ulman and Pavel pick up Artyom at an abandoned currency exchange point, where the boy was hiding from a pterodactyl. On the way, Eduard kills the leader of the pack of dogs pursuing them with an SVD. The car reaches the tower, and the group climbs up, from where they can see the settlement of the Blacks in the Botanical Garden. Ulman contacts Melnik and coordinates the strike on the lair of the Blacks. When the missiles reach their target, Ulman and Pavel begin to shout with delight, and Artyom, realizing what a mistake he made, rips off his gas mask and goes down into the metro.

Metro 2033

Together with Pavel, Ulman was on a mission near the place where the Nazis captured Artyom, mistaking him for a Red Line spy. Before the death of their prisoner, the monsters are going to have some fun, so they force Artyom to pray. Seeing the sadists bullying Artyom, the rangers kill the Nazis, saving the protagonist's life. Having gotten the hero drunk and brought to his senses, the Spartans find out that Artyom has some information about the missing Hunter. Ulman decides to change the original mission and sends his partner with Artyom to the "Black" station, where he intends to join them in order to then return together to Polis to Melnik.

However, Pavel dies along the way, and Artyom continues on his way alone. At the entrance to the "Black", not having time to take even a few steps inside, he is caught by a guard. Fortunately, at this moment Ulman appears behind the guard, killing him with a throwing knife. Having learned of Pavel's fate, the ranger warns Artyom that the station is overrun by fascists, and that he will have to act alone from now on. Having advised Artyom to turn off the generator and make his way to the exit under cover of darkness, he leaves the VSV with Artyom and leaves, having agreed to meet outside the station in an abandoned tunnel to Polis.

Taking advantage of his comrade's advice and taking precautions, Artyom quietly sneaks through the station teeming with fascists and reaches its border, where he meets Ulman again, after which they set off for Polis on a motorized railcar.

On the approaches to Polis, the heroes are asked to stop by the checkpoint guards, who are interested in who they are. Ulman, in his usual manner, jokes it off, which is why the guards immediately recognize him. Already on the territory of the "capital", having talked with Captain Krasnov, Ulman goes to Melnik's office, where he reports to the colonel about Artyom, as well as all the recent events.

When the thinned squad reaches the command center, the lights suddenly go out. Vladimir reports that the backup battery is dead, and to start the main power supply, they need to go down to the lower level and start the reactor manually. Melnik and Artyom go down to the reactor hall and try to start the reactor, but the biomass prevents the launch. Having dealt with the creature and started the reactor, Melnik and Artyom head to the Ostankino Tower, while Vladimir and Ulman stay to guide the missiles. Throughout the final act of the mission, he maintained contact with Melnik, and after the colonel was seriously wounded, with Artyom.

Metro: Last Light
Noticing Khan talking to Artyom, Ulman orders the philosopher to quickly leave the bunker, and tells the guy to go to Melnik for a meeting. Ulman and Khan leave for the exit of the barracks, giving Artyom time to prepare. On the way, Ulman learns some rather unpleasant news - Lesnitsky stole a secret virus from the lab and disappeared - which is why he remains at the entrance to the command center, saying that he will go to his superiors later. After the report, Melnik sends Ulman to carry out another task, where is unknown. However, already on the way to the base, Ulman is again assigned a task: to blow up a Hanseatic train captured by the Reds. He successfully completes the task and meets Khan in the wreckage of the train. Together with him, Ulman heads to Polis, passing through the cursed train car and the abandoned Polyanka station. Then Ulman goes to D-6. A few hours later, a monorail arrives with Melnik, Artyom, Khan and the rest of the Order's fighters. Together, they hold back the onslaught of Korbut's battalion. During the battle, he dragged the shell-shocked Artyom away.

Metro 2035
It is first mentioned at the very beginning of the novel, during an argument between Artyom and his stepfather. It turns out that at the moment of the destruction of the Black hive, the guy heard signals from the survivors on Ulman's radio. Completely confident that he did not imagine it, Artyom begins to make forays to the surface, trying to contact other survivors. When Artyom is granted an audience in Melnik's office upon returning to Polis, he mentions Ulman again, recalling those who died during the defense of the D-6 bunker in the spring of 2034.

Ulman's name is mentioned once - Ed (Eduard). However, in electronic and later editions his name is Petro.
In the novel, Ulman doesn't joke as often as in the game. In the original version, Ulman uses a VSV on the Dungeon and Cave levels, and a Kalash 2012 on the D-6 level. In the re-release, he is armed with a Kalash from the very beginning.
In the original game, at level "D-6", Ulman will explore the command center, get an electric shock and get scared by the phone ringing, and in the re-release, he will simply stand behind Melnik and Volodya.
While Melnik and Artyom will be starting emergency lighting and cleaning the air, Ulman and Vladimir will be playing cards (only in Redux).
When Artyom and Melnik reach the elevator to the reactor room, Ulman will come on the loudspeaker, introducing himself as the Invisible Observers.
Judging by the ending of the level "Separation", he is an atheist.
