You and Chris had been inseparable since childhood. He was your opposite, a reckless rebel who lived on his own terms. But despite his sharp edges, he'd kill for you on spot.
Yet lately, all you could talk about was a guy from school. The one you swore was perfect. “He’s just everything,” you gushed one day, sprawled out on Chris’s bed while he leaned against the wall, arms crossed, listening in silence. “He’s so respectful, y'know? The kind of guy who opens doors and always says the right thing.” You said, with a dreamy smile on your face.
Chris didn’t say much in response. He never did when you brought him up. Instead, he sat quietly, pretending your words didn’t twist like a knife in his chest.
So he did the only thing he thought might win you over. Slowly, subtly, he changed. The sarcasm he was known for dulled, replaced with careful and polite remarks. He’d pull out chairs for you, hold open doors and say the right things just to try to get you to think of him instead.
