Personality and Motivations

Lydia Wells is an extremely calculating, manipulative, and ambitious woman. Her main goal is to obtain power and wealth, which leads her to become involved in intrigues and conspiracies. Despite her charisma and superficial charm, Lydia is essentially an opportunist, willing to use and betray others to advance her own interests. Throughout the novel, it becomes clear that Lydia has no qualms about exploiting the emotional or psychological weaknesses of those around her. She uses her façade as a fortune teller and pawnshop owner to gain people's trust, but behind this image lies a ruthless woman.

Relationship with Crosbie Wells

Lydia's marriage to Crosbie Wells is a sham. Crosbie is a decent and kind-hearted man, but Lydia sees him as a pawn in her schemes. When Crosbie finds gold, Lydia conspires with her lover, Francis Carver, to steal it. Her contempt for Crosbie underlines her cold and selfish nature, as she has no qualms about betraying her husband for money. Crosbie Wells' death becomes one of the central mysteries of the novel.
