Suì-Fēng is a relatively petite woman with grey eyes and black hair. Her hair is kept short, with two long braids tied with a white cloth, each ending in a large gold ring.[2] 110 years ago, Suì-Fēng's hair was shoulder-length and softer in appearance. She wears a traditional Shinigami captain's uniform with a sleeveless haori and a yellow obi tied around her waist.[3] Underneath her standard Shinigami captain's uniform, Suì-Fēng wears an Onmitsukidō Commander's uniform, which is sleeveless and does not cover her back, though she does wear long black headbands.[4] Instead of the standard Shinigami sandals with tabi, she wears traditional Chinese shoes with plain white socks.[5]

Seventeen months after Aizen's defeat, Suì-Fēng's hair resembles what she had 110 years ago.[6]

Suì-Fēng is staunchly loyal, determined, and unwavering in her beliefs. She is hard-working and holds a strong moral stance, particularly believing in following orders. She is generally reserved and is not truly arrogant like her lieutenant, though she is not above taunting/joking at her opponents or smirking in battle, a trait shared with her predecessor. She will not hesitate in the slightest to strike down even her own subordinates if they get in her way. She chooses to ignore all of her subordinates, including Lieutenant Ōmaeda, believing that personal struggles build character.[7] Suì-Fēng, like many female Shinigami, is a member of the Shinigami Women's Association.

Suì-Fēng loves fish, but dislikes other meats.[1] She also seems to be very obsessed with Yoruichi, often spending her free time daydreaming about the days when they fought together and practiced Shunpo.[1] At one point, she even tried to give Yoruichi a heart-shaped box of chocolates, with little success. She seems to have a love for anything related to black cats, Yoruichi's alternate form, and has a large collection of black cat-shaped merchandise. At one point, Rangiku, who had just returned from a mission in the real world, gave Suì-Fēng a black cat plush toy.[8] It is also known that since Yoruichi's return, she has begun collecting cat paraphernalia and installed underfloor heating in the 2nd Division's quarters (with the costs covered by her lieutenant).[1] At one point, Suì-Fēng appeared to be admiring pictures of Yoruichi.[9] Later, as part of the Shinigami Women's Association's photo-collecting project, she attempts to take nude photos of Yoruichi while she is distracted, but fails.[10] When the Association

Swordsmanship: Suì-Fēng is a master swordsman, usually using her Zanpakutō when confronting an opponent with a drawn sword. She is unique in that her style deviates from traditional styles. Suì-Fēng holds the blade horizontally in a reverse underhand grip, using the blade like a large dagger pointing backwards towards the bottom of her wielding hand. All strikes are delivered by moving her hand forward as if to strike, with the blade quickly bouncing off her hand in a wide arc. She is quite adept at blocking with the blade in this manner. She is also proficient in fighting in a normal style, making her proficient in both forms of sword fighting.[22][23]

Hand-to-Hand Combat: As the leader of the Onmitsukidō, Suì-Fēng is required to be highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat, and has been training since she first joined the Onmitsukidō. She is likely the most skilled hand-to-hand combatant in all of Soul Society, being able to fight evenly and gain the upper hand against her mentor, Yoruichi Shihōin. She is also skilled in counterattacks. She has also proven to be difficult to touch unless she allows it.[24][23][25][26][27][28]

Carp vs. Waterfall (Flag of Japan 滝鯉 [takigoi]):[29] A hakuda move in which one blocks the opponent's kicks by catching one of the opponent's legs with the forearm and blocking the opponent's other leg with one's own leg. The move blocks and traps the opponent, who is left open to an attack from the free hand.[30] Windmill (Flag of Japan 風車 [kazaguruma]):[31] A hakuda move in which one throws their body into the air and makes a slashing motion with their legs, placing one foot in front of the other without holding onto the ground. The movement can be done backwards or sideways. Once the movement is done, with one foot high above the head, the user delivers a devastating kick to the opponent, sending them flying with great force.[32] Tsurigaki (Flag of Japan 吊柿 [Hanging Persimmon]): A Hakuda technique where one uses the opponent's strike to their advantage.

Shikai: Release Command - Sting the Enemies to Death (Flag of Japan 尽敵螫殺, Jinteki Shakusetsu).[48] Suì-Fēng grabs Suzumebachi with her right hand, the entire sword glowing white and shrinking in size. When the glow fades, it is revealed that Suzumebachi has now taken the form of a black and gold gauntlet with a small chain connecting to a stinger-like blade on Suì-Fēng's middle finger. The "stinger" is approximately twice as long as her normal fingertips, slightly increasing her striking range. The colors and pattern of the Shikai resemble those of a hornet.[49] In this form, Suzumebachi is still able to withstand attacks from an opponent's sword, as Suì-Fēng can block incoming attacks with the "stinger" and parts of the gauntlet.[50] Suì-Fēng can use the same poison that Suzumebachi secretes for Two-Hit Death as an antidote by impaling herself.[51]

Death in Two Strikes (Flag of Japan 弐撃決殺 [nigeki kessatsu], Viz: Crushing Double Strike): In the first step, Suì-Fēng impales her opponent with Suzumebachi. In addition to creating a fairly deep wound, the attack leaves a butterfly-shaped imprint on the victim's body. Spreading out from the center of the wound, known as the Hō Monka (Flag of Japan 蜂紋華 [hōmonka], Hornet's Mark, Viz: Flower Crest of the Bee), this imprint becomes the target of Suì-Fēng's second attack. If struck in the same place as the first time, the person will inevitably die, thus illustrating "death in two steps".[52] When the ability takes effect, the large mon quickly spreads out from the two smaller ones, completely destroying the victim's body.[53][54] The mon are maintained by Suì-Fēng's will, and cannot be removed unless she herself chooses to do so; when Yoruichi was still in charge of the Onmitsukidō, she could only maintain the mon for half an hour.[55] The mechanics behind Suzumebachi's ability do not operate through a point of entry, but rather through a point of actual surface contact.[56] This ability is caused by the poison Suzumebachi secretes. Bankai: Jakuhō Raikōben (雀蜂雷公鞭, Jakuhō Raikōben, Flag of Japan "Hornet's Lightning Whip"): Upon activating her Bankai, a pillar of Reiatsu shoots into the air before disappearing.[59] Its appearance is that of a rocket launcher base with golden armor that encases Suì-Fēng's right arm and extends up to her shoulder, forming a face shield that she uses to cover the right side of her face.[60][61] The entire Bankai consists of a large, pointed golden cylinder with black markings, twice the size of Suì-Fēng herself.[62] Before activating her Bankai, Suì-Fēng wraps a heavy metal belt (a border of inverted silver)[63] around the building she is standing near,[64] in preparation for the powerful recoil from the attack and the resulting large explosion. She uses her Bankai so rarely that it remains largely unseen by members of Soul Society; even her own lieutenant comments that he has never seen it before.[65] Suì-Fēng explains that she would prefer not to use her Bankai. She believes that it offends her pride as a secret agent because it is too large to hide, too heavy to move, and its attack is too flashy to kill.[66] While using her Bankai, Suì-Fēng's Reiatsu turns light blue.[67]
