Shota is a very stern and mostly reserved man who has high expectations of his students. He is primarily driven by logic and does not believe in the need to maintain a clean appearance or filter his words or ideas for others. He is often shown to be cold, apathetic, and impatient, exhorting very little energy in most situations, preferring to take naps in his sleeping bag. As a teacher of high expectations, Shota is known for expelling students he deems unsuitable for UA Academy, though it is notable that he has yet to expel any student from Class 1-A despite being known to do so. He can be rigid and strict when necessary and also has little tolerance for disobedient behavior. Shota is not afraid to put his students through rigorous training and often pushes the more unpleasant parts of heroism so that his students can surpass their limits.

Shota has proven to be very vocal and unafraid to express his ideas. He has mentioned on several occasions that some of UA's options regarding exams are not practical or challenging enough for true Hero aspirants and is adamant about changing certain systems used by the institution. He also openly stated that he didn't believe Izuku Midoriya could become a hero when they first met and is known for lying to his students to manipulate them into giving their best, a technique he describes as a "logical deception"/"rational deception". Despite his apathetic traits, Shota truly cares for his students and will go to great lengths to protect them, such as when he saves Tsuyu Asui from Tomura Shigaraki despite his serious injuries. He has also expressed his belief in his students on multiple occasions and trusts that even the likes of Katsuki Bakugo won't be swayed by villains. Recovery Girl even implied that he allowed himself to be captured by Momo Yaoyorozu during their End-of-Term Test to boost her confidence.

Shota is also an expert at handling his Quirk and equipment together, such as using his glasses in conjunction with his Quirk to prevent enemies from figuring out whose Quirk he is nullifying, effectively creating confusion.
