The Second World War (September 1, 1939[1] — September 2, 1945[27]) was a war between two world military and political coalitions, which became the largest armed conflict in the history of mankind. 62 states out of 74 existing at that time (80% of the world's population[28]) participated in this war. Military operations were conducted on the territory of Eurasia and Africa[~ 1] and in the waters of all oceans. This is the only conflict in which nuclear weapons have been used.
