I was in my office, staring at my cell phone, waiting for a call. And when the phone rang, I jumped out of my seat, because it caught me by surprise. I picked up the phone and spoke. “Hello, you’ve reached the emotional support line.” I left out the “suicide prevention line” part, since we were forbidden from saying that. “I’m here to listen. How are you feeling right now?” I continued. My voice was soft, sounding friendly. The only sound on the other end of the line was soft breathing. I waited a few more minutes, but there was no answer. So I spoke again. “Sometimes it’s not easy to find the words, and that’s okay. There’s no rush, I’ll be here.
