Larry was born to Bertha and George Russell presumably around 1860. His sister Gladys was born around 1865. The Russells moved to New York City in 1859. Larry studied engineering at Harvard University, graduating in 1882, and moved into his family's newly completed home. Although his father wanted him to continue his legacy in his business, Russell Consolidated Trust, Larry's goal was to become an architect, and his parents decided to support his endeavor. He studied architecture with Stanford White, who had designed the Russells' home. Larry redesigned his family's home in Newport, which was completed in 1883. In 1883, he also took on his first formal architectural commission to remodel Susan Blane's home.

After graduating from Harvard, Larry begins to make friends with the young men and women of the "old" families. He attends a party in Newport, where he befriends Oscar van Rhijn and Carrie Astor. During a chance encounter on the street, he saves Pumpkin, his neighbor Marian Brook's dog, when it is in the middle of the road and about to be trampled by a horse and carriage. During his mother's first party for their elite neighbors on 61st Street, they receive very few guests, although he and Gladys say hello to Marian when she passes by.

Oscar takes Larry to visit his mother Agnes van Rhijn's house, against her wishes, when Tom Raikes is also visiting for tea. Agnes treats him politely, but is watching angrily as Larry talks to Marian, which Larry jokes about. Later, Larry joins the family in visiting Anne Morris's charity bazaar.
