Not much is known about George's origins or family background, but the impression is that he is largely a self-made man. He became a multimillionaire with the close assistance of his beloved wife Bertha Russell. At some point, they lost a fortune, but managed to recover it. He is the head of business at his company Russell Consolidated Trust. His wealth comes largely from his railroad business holdings. He moved to New York City with his family around 1879, and they moved into their palatial estate on 61st Street in the summer of 1882, when the first season takes place.
