At the beginning of the series, he had a slim, athletic build, but developed a heavier build over time. David's typical style was kitsch, wearing a black T-shirt, two gold necklaces (the bottom one had a cross), short gray sweatpants with two yellow straps on the sides, and white tennis shoes with blue straps. Later, he began wearing his deceased mother's yellow EMT vest, which had luminous blue material on the inner lining of the collar, and a light green Edgerunners logo painted on the back. David gradually added more implants to his body, becoming taller and more muscular. While he has kept his overall appearance intact, he no longer wears a black t-shirt, preferring to remain shirtless when not covered by an EMT vest. [2]

David was born to Gloria Martinez in the back of an ambulance as it sped through the streets of Night City. While reattaching the arm of an edge runner who had been shot, Gloria felt her waters break, so she quickly finished the stitches before asking the mercenaries to switch seats with her, then proceeded to deliver her baby on the stretcher, while the ambulance was still speeding toward the hospital. The mercenary beside her cut the umbilical cord using mantis blades in the arm that Gloria had just reattached. A brutal but somewhat poetic story that bonds mother and son in the realization that she would do anything for him, and he would never disappoint her. [4]

David grew up on the streets of Santo Domingo, living only with his mother in an apartment in a massive H4 building in Arroyo. Life in Santo was not easy, as danger was present around every corner of the garbage-filled area, even though Gloria raised her child on her own and protected him from all possible threats. The problem was that David grew up feeling like he was destined for something big, and because of this, he was usually bored with mundane life. Anytime something serious happened in the neighborhood, David was thrilled if he could be there. For these reasons, he would watch and observe anyone and everyone in and around his massive building, and would talk to anyone he had never seen before. Soon David was visiting local Repairdoc clinics to stare at any new cyberware they received, and eventually brought it to the doorstep of Dr., whom he befriended. With all this curiosity, there were times when David was beaten, but his enthusiasm never waned. One time, however, he angered the son of a 6th Street resident, who pinned David to the ground and began punching him. The kid kept going until he finally broke his hand and immediately started wailing while everyone watched. David took that kid as a little bitch, and even though he was covered in his own blood, he started laughing, and continued laughing for about an hour after that. This incident affected the locals, meaning that no one in the neighborhood would touch David again, with some of them reassuring David that he was special, and that he would do great things in life. Due to the great effort Gloria put into her work as a medic at REO Meatwagon, David becomes eligible to enroll in Arasaka Academy after successfully proving his grades. At some point after that, David started selling XBD devices to his classmates that he got from Dr. Despite this life, David never felt like he belonged to any family, especially since his classmates were all from wealthy backgrounds. But he receives a special medication that allows him to avoid the effects of cybernetic hallucinations for the time being.
