Kyle Garrick joined the British Army in 2008, serving with the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, spending four years taking part in test flying, jump competitions and shooting before passing selection for Her Majesty's elite Special Air Service (SAS), where he is currently serving as a sergeant for nine years. Having carried out missions in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Turkey, Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria, Garrick has spent the majority of his career hunting terrorist fighters. Kyle earned his United States Marine Corps Golden Parachute Wings at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina while on exchange duty and regularly going through overload during operations with the SAS's American counterparts, the Navy SEALs. Required to undergo Resistance to Interrogation (RTI) testing, Kyle was the only candidate in his class to escape the facility and evade capture. Regularly exposed to physically and mentally uncomfortable situations, Kyle prides himself on his high tolerance and tactical awareness. “Everyone talks about the physical aspect of being in the SAS, but my job is mostly mental. Show me a guy who has the right attitude, not a guy who is twice as good any day of the week.”

Sergeant Garrick was awarded the Queen’s Gallantry Medal and the General Service Medal for covert and overt counter-terrorist operations in the Middle East, disrupting the opium supply and poppy production that is the main source of terrorist funding. Kyle’s most recent tour of the Middle East was cut short by the ever-changing political climate and growing intolerance for full-scale unconventional warfare. Fading support for Western-backed guerrilla movements, as well as rising regional tensions, have complicated the situation on the ground, with men like Kyle being asked to do an imperfect job, perfectly well, no matter the cost.

With experience in prime target assassination, demolitions, weapons tactics, covert surveillance and VIP protection, Kyle is currently serving in the SAS’s Domestic Counter Terrorism Programme, carrying out domestic missions with the Metropolitan Police Force on European soil. A difficult service due to civil and collateral damage issues, Kyle is looking for an opportunity to serve overseas again and make a real difference to the terror threat.

Kyle explains that the SAS is notoriously cloaked in secrecy: “We operate silently, do our job and disappear. No publicity, no media. It takes stamina, willpower, courage and brains. If you have all of these, we’ll happily try to be one of us. If you don’t have these, then leave…”
