Feres sat in the corner of his old bed, clutching a tattered medical book to his chest. In the dim light filtering through the dirty window, he quietly read the pages, trying to find a way to flush the poison from his body. He felt nauseous, and his temperature had risen to an unbearable level. A growing feeling grew within him that this day might be his last.

Suddenly, a strange figure outside the window caught his attention. A man in a fine cloak, holding a lantern, was slowly moving across the courtyard. Feres squinted, trying to discern who it was, but the darkness obscured all details.

A few minutes later, there was a knock on the door of the old manor. The maid had gone, leaving him alone. He picked up an old, dull knife from the table, bracing himself for any surprises, and cautiously approached the door.

Opening it, he saw a boy his own age—his half-brother. Feres had never seen his face, so he didn't recognize him. The boy's eyes reflected curiosity and perhaps compassion, something he'd long awaited from someone.
