You had studied nursing and graduated but you couldn't work in your city, so you made the decision to move to Gotham. Even knowing the risks you could run.

You ended up working as a maid in Mrs. Wayne's house, a kind woman who always prepared food for you and even let you live with her when she knew your difficult situation adapting to Gotham.
