Appearance

L is a tall, pale, and thin young man with messy black hair, black eyes, and deep dark circles under his eyes due to insomnia. He always wears jeans and a long-sleeved white shirt, and almost never wears shoes, preferring to go barefoot. His hunched posture and tendency to sit with his knees drawn up to his chest are notable characteristics.

Physical appearance: He is tall (1.79 m) and very thin (about 50 kg), with pale skin and prominent dark circles under his eyes. His hair is black and disheveled, reaching his neck. Clothing: He almost always wears the same jeans and a long-sleeved white shirt. He rarely wears shoes, often walking barefoot even in public. L disorders

L exhibits a lack of social skills, unusual behavior, and an obsessive focus on cases, traits that could indicate the presence of autistic traits. L suffers from work-related sleep disorder, specifically chronic insomnia, due to his obsessive dedication to cases. L has spent most of his life solving criminal cases and pursuing and apprehending notorious criminals and delinquents worldwide. It is implied that he suffers from loneliness, inner turmoil, and low self-esteem, even going so far as to call himself "a monster" at one point.

Cases

When he becomes involved in the capture of a serial killer known as "Kira," who is only known to kill criminals by causing them to have heart attacks, the intellectually brilliant protagonist's deductions lead him to suspect a student named Light Yagami, who is indeed the person committing these murders, using supernatural methods. This is how he becomes the protagonist's main nemesis and rival.

He was created because a figure was needed to represent justice and stand up to Light. He has an eccentric personality. The case of serial killer BB in Los Angeles.

History

Born on October 31, 1979, L is an enigmatic private detective who has cooperated with international organizations in solving highly complex criminal cases, although no details are given about his work in these cases. Considered the best in the world, he conceals his identity from the public and communicates through his assistant, Watari. He has also worked using the aliases "Eraldo Coil" and "Deneuve," who are considered the most famous detectives on the planet after L himself. The story begins when Light Yagami finds the Death Note after a shinigami named Ryuk drops it from a parallel world out of sheer boredom. The young man believes society is corrupt and begins using the notebook to kill criminals, which soon attracts the attention of Interpol and the public, who dub him "Kira." L informs the authorities of his intention to capture and "bring him to justice," so he devises a strategy: he uses a lookalike who appears on television, and when Light murders him, the detective gains information about his methods and publicly declares that he will catch him.

History

To capture Kira, L has the support of many organizations, one of which is the NPA, composed of Japanese police officers. However, one of these agents is Soichiro Yagami, Light's father, so the boy obtains confidential information. At the same time, L realizes that Kira is someone close to his comrades. Eventually, Kira reveals his face to the NPA agents, and L begins to suspect the teenager specifically, as Kira murders all the FBI agents who had come to Japan to cooperate on the case. One of them, Raye Penber, was tasked with monitoring Light. L tracks down the boy after Naomi Misora, Penber's fiancée and a former FBI agent who had worked with the detective in the past, disappears. L reveals to the team that he suspects Soichiro's son, creating some tension in the workplace. To investigate him personally, he enrolls at Toho University, which Light attends. Even after showing him his face, he ensures that, should Light truly be the killer, he cannot kill him, revealing his identity but not his name. This attempt to break him is unsuccessful, as the young man remains composed and continues to find no concrete evidence to incriminate him. The protagonist joins the team ostensibly to contribute to the investigation and, outwardly, forges a friendship with L. This is nothing more than a charade, as neither truly trusts the other. The character proves right again when he apprehends Misa Amane, who has contacted Light and has been acting as a "second Kira" by possessing another Death Note. On one occasion he imprisons Light and Misa but fails to prove their guilt due to a plan devised by the former, and has no choice but to release them.

History

As the plot unfolds, the police team learns of the notebook's existence, but far from discovering Kira's identity, they suffer crucial losses. This is because Light devises a strategy to coerce Rem, a shinigami who accompanies Misa, into writing L and Watari's names in his Death Note. Watari easily complies, as these creatures can identify a person simply by looking at them, and he fakes his death on November 5, 2004. Only after his faked death are details of his past revealed: he comes from an orphanage for gifted children called Wammy's House, located in the English city of Winchester and run by Watari. There, other young people with similar abilities are trained to become "L's successor," and two of them, Near and Mello, later take charge of the Kira case.

Phrase

"There are various ghosts in this world: Ghosts who don't show their appearance and cause mischief... Ghosts who snatch away children... Ghosts who eat dreams... Ghosts who suck blood, and... ghosts who lie all the time. A lying ghost can be troublesome. He, unlike other ghosts, is much more resilient: Even though he doesn't understand people's feelings, he pretends to be human like nothing; Even though he's never been hungry, he eats; Even though he's uninterested, he studies hard; Even though he's never loved a friend, he cultivates friendship. If that kind of ghost were to appear to me, perhaps I would be caught and devoured. Because that ghost... is me."

Past

L is considered the world's greatest detective, thanks to his past success in solving the most complex cases that no one else could, such as the BB serial killer case, and his role in preventing World War III. For this reason, the police decide to ask for his help in trying to solve the Kira case, although they warn from the outset that L only participates in cases that personally interest him. Fortunately for the police, L is already aware of the case and has sent Watari to let them know that he is willing to solve it, but that to do so, he will need all the cooperation the police can provide. Soon, he embarks on a clever strategy by which he determines that Kira is located in the Kanto region of Japan and subsequently declares war on him via television. Thus begins a battle of wits between Kira (Light) and Watari.

Appearance

L is a 25-year-old young man, although he appears to be a 17 or 18-year-old teenager.

He has very unruly black hair. His eyes are black and his pupils are dilated at all times (except when he dies). His skin is so white that it takes on cadaverous tones. This may be due to the fact that he is rarely exposed to sunlight. His skin contrasts with his deep, marked dark circles since he sleeps very little, staying awake with the help of all kinds of sweets and caffeine, which gives him a tired appearance. His height is approximately 1.79 cm like Light Yagami, however, he seems shorter than him since he always walks hunched over.

He has a fragile appearance due to his amazing thinness, despite this, he has proven to be quite strong when it comes to fighting Light Yagami. He wears the same clothes every day. These consist of a worn, white, long-sleeved T-shirt and baggy jeans that are a little long on him. He usually goes barefoot, however he has been seen wearing white sneakers in very bad condition. He has strange behaviors, such as squatting anywhere or picking up objects with his fingertips. In turn, to help himself think, he brings his thumb to his lips and plays with it. He is a social misfit since he finds it difficult to relate to other people and, until he meets Light, he was never seen in the company of a friend. He has no tact when speaking, so he can hurt feelings due to his extreme sincerity.

Childhood

The little that is known about his childhood is that he was taken at the age of 8 to the orphanage that Watari formed, as an orphan without a name, shortly after arriving he had already become involved in a fight with 5 boys older than him, defeating them with apparent ease, he justified himself by saying "After they said a new face, embrace him they applied violence against me, they were the ones who started it. I am justice."

He was absolutely incompatible with the other guests and monopolized the things he liked just because he was the strongest, he always played on his own, it didn't take long for them to realize that he had "certain special abilities". In the time when the Internet was not so widespread, L was already ordering equipment, giving orders to Watari who at that time called him Wammy, on how to invest his funds to obtain greater profits, Watari obeyed and surprisingly 2 years later his assets increased almost 20,000 times the original amount. After many years, L suddenly said "This murder case is more difficult than any riddle or money game" it was a serial murder case without any clues, L's eyes shined and he said "I finally found it Wammy". Then L gives a statement to an unknown source through a computer with the following content "I have come to the conclusion that the murderer is Mr Rushuall-Bid".

Personality

As personality traits, L is a very introverted character, who avoids interacting with people and does not usually trust anyone, a fact that he himself recognizes. He has unusual habits, such as squatting, claiming that if he doesn't, his concentration decreases by 40%. He is so focused on solving his cases that he has no time to worry about his own physical appearance, as evidenced by the fact that he wears the same clothes day after day. He is very persistent in his deductions and finds it difficult to accept that they may be wrong (he once had Light locked up for 50 days to prove that he was Kira, despite the fact that the deaths of criminals resumed 13 days after imprisonment), so he falls into a deep depression when he realizes that he was wrong.

Despite his frail appearance, L is a very good fighter and can be seen to know some kind of martial art (Capoeira, according to the author of the series), as well as many other surprising skills, such as knowing how to pilot a helicopter. Another characteristic of L is his diet, based on all kinds of sweet foods, high in glucose (although it is not mentioned in the series, it is possible that this is due to the large amounts of energy his brain needs to function), as well as coffee with a lot of sugar, which seems to be his only drink, probably to help him stay awake for long periods of time. He does not usually sleep much, and when he does, he remains in his usual position, sitting on his haunches.

He goes to the bathroom with the doors open and also uses his characteristic sitting position to urinate. Since he likes to stay clean, he frequently takes a shower, but never bathes himself; he simply enters the "human washing machine" invented by Watari, complete with a drying function. He doesn't dress himself; Watari always does, as he speculates, he never feels like doing it himself.

Personality

He is very peculiar with clothes, so he always has 10 identical changes of clothes ready for him.

He doesn't dislike amusement parks, but he gets bored there. He prefers quiet places like the park or the art gallery, which are also his favorite places.

There are also idol performances that he attends, this could infer that L already knew Misa Amane before Kira's case, but he spends most of his time in his room solving difficult cases and eating sweets at the same time.

L is also a strict believer in justice, but unlike Kira, for L all human lives are sacred. However, L does not hesitate to use a life he considers wasted; such as making use of a criminal sentenced to death if it helps solve his cases. For this reason, L considers Kira to be a serial killer of the worst kind, since, while their goals have something in common (making the world a better place), Kira's methods are opposite to his own. Upon first confronting Kira, L proclaims that he "is justice." However, L would later say, "I solve difficult cases because it is my hobby. Under the principles of modern law, I am also a villain who has committed many crimes. As such, I only involve myself in cases that are of personal interest to me. This is not justice. However, I will not stop until I solve them... For I am a stubborn person who hates to lose." Thus, his main objective becomes to arrest Kira.

Curiosities

Ohba states in "Death Note: How to Read 13" that L never considered Light a friend and that he likely secretly thinks very negatively of him. The novelization of the third film states that L considers Light a friend; however, since the novelization wasn't written by Ohba, some consider it "non-canon." Furthermore, in episode 25 of the anime, L's last episode, there's a scene where L cleans Light's feet, though it's debatable whether this was truly done out of friendship. According to "Death Note: How to Read 13", L hates socks. Based on his reaction to hearing the word Shinigami, it is thought that L may have some fear of them, although others claim that this fact may be related to BB. In Chapter 25, at the beginning, when L speaks to Watari, he is seen standing normally, unlike his usual hunched posture. Throughout the series, L, in a conversation with Light, states that he crouches or squats instead of sitting normally, saying that if he sat normally, his deduction skills could decrease by 40%. Although in "Death Note: How to Read 13" it is stated that L's intelligence is 8/10, below both Light and Near, however, when asked which character he thought was the most intelligent, Ohba answered L. L can tie two cherry stems in a knot with his mouth L always lied about the probability percentages, since, in reality, when he stated them, he was more than 90% certain. When Misa meets L, it can be observed that her life expectancy is: 75 23 1 362. However, it is unknown how to convert this to human time. L only eats sweet foods, like candy and pastries. The healthiest things she's ever eaten are fruits, the most common being strawberries, bananas, and cherries.

Phrases

Justice will prevail! I am L. I can only sit like this; if I sit like everyone else does, I would lose 40% of my deductive ability.

Past

L spent his childhood at Wammy's House, the orphanage for gifted children founded by Watari with the goal of finding someone capable of becoming the "world's greatest detective." While the details of L's early life are unknown, it can be said that he has some painful memories associated with a church and the ringing of bells. In the series, there is a scene where, caught in a storm, L hears bells that no one else can hear. Similarly, at the moment of his death in the anime, a flashback shows him as a child crying in front of a church, with the sound of bells tolling in the background.

Past

Main article: Confrontation The ICPO is discussing the recent cases of criminals who have died of heart attacks. Due to suspicions among some council members that these are not accidental deaths but planned homicides, they suggest calling L. It is then that Watari arrives and informs the members that L is already investigating the case. Following this, L addresses the ICPO members and confirms the suspicions of some: it is a case of mass murder. He then asks them to decide at the meeting whether or not to support the investigation. He also requests the additional cooperation of the Japanese Police Agency, as L is certain that the perpetrator(s) were Japanese, or at least located in Japan. Therefore, the investigation headquarters should be established in that country. He was in the Kantō region of Japan, where he pretended to broadcast an ICPO advertisement worldwide, but in reality, it was only broadcast in that region. To carry out his plan, L used Lind L. Tailor, a prisoner whose execution was scheduled for that same day. Evidently, when Kira saw the advertisement on television, he felt slighted and humiliated by "L," so he killed Lind L. Tailor without hesitation. This only served to confirm two of L's theories: First, that Kira can kill a person without being present, and second, that Kira cannot kill just anyone. Main article: Negotiation The killings of criminals continue, and L remains in contact with the NPA (through Watari). The NPA confirms that information about the heart attack victims had been made public in Japan immediately before their deaths. Furthermore, at L's request, the police investigate the criminals' times of death and conclude that all occurred between 4:00 PM and 2:00 AM, with 68% of them occurring between 8:00 PM and 12:00 AM on weekdays.

Past

The only exception occurred on weekends or holidays, when the time of death varied much more. With this information, L quickly deduced that the killer was a student, and that given the fact that he only killed criminals, he was a young man who aspired to be a kind of "deity" and who had a very childish concept of good and evil. Immediately after the police put forward this theory, Kira began killing a criminal every hour. In L's view, this meant that Kira could not only kill remotely but also determine the victim's time of death. It also indicated that Kira had access to police information, since the times of the murders changed immediately as soon as they became suspicious due to the timing. Based on this, L decided to call the FBI to investigate everyone connected to the police officers working on the Kira case, as there was a possibility of information leaks. Six more criminals die in the early hours of the morning, but this time, three of the victims exhibited strange behavior moments before their deaths. Initially, L believes this behavior might be due to fear of being killed by Kira, but he later concludes that Kira controls people's actions moments before their deaths, and that this is merely an experiment Kira is conducting to test the extent of his power. Therefore, L orders the police not to release the circumstances of the prisoners' deaths, as doing so would give the results to Kira. After analyzing a letter left by one of the dead prisoners, L discovers that if he only reads the first line of the message, it says: "L, did you know?" Watari informs L that another prisoner has died of a heart attack and has left what appears to be a suicide note.

Past

Nearly a week later, L receives a call from the FBI director, who informs him that the twelve agents they sent to Japan are dead and that they presume Kira killed them, so they decide to cancel the investigation. Chief Yagami then contacts L to ask if it's true that he asked the FBI to investigate anyone connected to the police, which L confirms. Although L felt this was necessary, the police officers were upset by the distrust shown towards them. While they are talking, Watari informs L that another note was found, this time reading: "Only eats apples." The full message was: "L, did you know? The God of Death only eats apples." Because of the deaths of the FBI agents, Chief Yagami speaks with the team members and gives them the option to resign from the case, since Kira will kill not only criminals but anyone who gets in his way, so remaining on the case means risking their lives. As a result, most of the team members resign from the investigation, leaving only six men, including Chief Yagami. L believes their decision demonstrates their strong sense of justice and lets them know he no longer distrusts them. However, Shuichi Aizawa, one of the officers who decided to continue the investigation, expresses his disapproval of L, arguing that someone who trusts another should not hide their face. Anticipating this, L arranges a meeting place, stipulating only that it must be at the Teito Hotel, that they will arrive in two groups 30 minutes apart, and that they must arrive before midnight.

Past

Finally, they meet L, and they are surprised by his appearance, as they hadn't imagined him this way. Chief Yagami introduces himself, and then all the members show their badges and IDs. L responds that they shouldn't be so careless, because if he were Kira, they would all be dead by now. Matsuda is surprised, since he knew Kira needed a face, but not a name. Then, Soichiro Yagami mentions that criminals whose names weren't released or were misspelled in the media didn't die, although there was no way to verify the connection. Before the conversation between the NPC and L begins, L informs them that no one can take notes on what is said in the meetings and that the information will only be carried in their heads, to prevent further leaks. Finally, L asks them to stop calling him by that name and to please call him Ryuuzaki. Matsuda tells Ryuuzaki that it would be better to conceal the criminals' names, as this would prevent Kira from killing them and many victims would be spared. However, Ryuuzaki argues that doing so would endanger the entire population, as he considers Kira childish and a hater of losers, just like himself. As primary evidence, he points out that at the beginning of the investigation, Kira only killed criminals, but when provoked by using Lind L. Tailor, he didn't hesitate to kill him. Therefore, if they concealed the names of the worst criminals, Kira wouldn't hesitate to kill thieves, petty criminals, or innocent people; he would hold everyone hostage, and anyone who tried to oppose him would be seen as a criminal in Kira's eyes. Ryuuzaki devises a plan, which involves using the media to make Kira believe that, due to the deaths of the FBI agents, the United States sent an arsenal of 1,500 troops.

Past

L uses several aliases to protect himself from Kira. The main one is Ryuzaki, which he uses as his real name after revealing himself as such to the investigation team, made up of the few police officers who still wanted to confront Kira. When speaking to Light, he introduces himself as Ryuga Hideki, a name taken from a well-known pop singer, in order to protect himself from potential death (if Light tried to write this name in the Death Note, and instead of L, the singer died because he had thought of his face instead of the other, it would be easy to determine that Light was Kira). Other aliases were Eraldo Coil and Donuve, with which he played the role of the second and third best detective in the world. He used the name Eraldo Coil (which had originally belonged to a real person) to infiltrate Aiber into Yotsuba.

Past

He is the first to oppose Kira, and he manages to get closer to him than any other character (excluding Near). After declaring war on him on television, L begins to suspect that Kira is likely a student, based on the timing of the murders and the childlike personality of whoever is behind them. As soon as these suspicions become public within the police force, Light alters the times of the criminals' deaths, leading L to believe that Kira has some kind of connection to the police. Therefore, he requests assistance from the FBI, which sends 12 agents to Japan to spy on people close to the police, especially students. After these agents are all killed by Kira, the police lose faith in L, since he had been spying on them, and most of those assigned to the case abandon it.

After Light voluntarily locked himself away, and after the deaths of criminals resumed, the likelihood of Light being Kira decreased significantly. Therefore, to determine whether or not he was Kira, L decided to have Soichiro, Light's father, stage a mock execution using blanks. The plan was that if Light or Misa were Kira, or the second Kira, they would kill Soichiro to save their own lives. Since both had lost their memories, Soichiro survived, and L determined that neither of them had any connection to Kira. However, he still suspected Light, so he kept him handcuffed. Following these events, L and Light teamed up to work together on the case and soon found evidence linking Kira to the Yotsuba Group. After a long investigation in which a good friendship was forged between them (although interrupted by some fights), Light and L discovered that Kira was Kyosuke Higuchi, and easily captured him.

Past

But with this, Light regained his memories and tried again to kill L. Not only that, thanks to the 13-day rule he had invented, he managed to prove his innocence, and L's suspicions about him completely disappeared.

When L decided to test the notebook, Light's plan reached its climax: Rem, Misa's shinigami, was forced to kill both L and Watari to save her, sacrificing herself for her, since if a shinigami prolongs a human's life, they immediately die. Thus, L was killed by Rem, but not before realizing that Light was Kira thanks to the latter's smile as his body collapsed to the ground. Light, therefore, not only managed to eliminate L, but also found himself in a privileged position as the new L, since L Lawliet himself had praised his abilities and had said on more than one occasion that he would be his best successor should anything happen to him.

Watari

Watari 「ワタリ, Watari?」 whose real name is Quillsh Wammy 「キルシュ・ワイミー, Kirushu Waimī?」, is L's assistant and butler, as well as the founder of Wammy's House, an orphanage for gifted children. Watari is almost always disguised in a trench coat and hat, but when he and L decide to collaborate, he reveals his true appearance: an elderly man with slicked-back gray hair and a gray mustache. He wears a formal suit and glasses. He can be considered a rather mysterious character, almost as much as L, especially at the beginning of the series. As is known, he uses a disguise and only reveals his face when L decides to collaborate directly with the few police officers who still want to capture Kira. He is a character quite beloved by all who know him, due to his personality, a fact evident in the sad expression of the headmaster of Wammy's House after his death, as he looks at a photograph of him. Little is known about Watari's personal life, except for what is directly related to the series. Watari is a great inventor who uses the money from his inventions to found orphanages, most notably Wammy's House, created to find gifted children capable of becoming the world's greatest detective. Watari first appears at the meeting where world leaders discuss the Kira case, offering L's assistance and requesting their full cooperation. From then on, he acts as a mediator between L and the police until their relationship deteriorates, forcing him to reveal his true identity to the few remaining officers still interested in hunting Kira, demonstrating L's trust in them. He continues the investigation as Ryuzaki's advisor until he is murdered by Rem, culminating in Light's plan. Despite his age, he had some talent in combat, as he is seen with a rifle.

Near

Near 「ニア, Nia?」, whose real name is Nate River 「ネイトリバー, Neito Ribā?」, also known as N 「ん, Enu?」, is one of the main characters in the story of the manga/anime Death Note.

He is the younger of L's two successors, both of whom were raised at Watari's orphanage (Wammy's House) for gifted children. After L's death, he begins his investigation into the Kira case. Based on evidence gathered over a period of four years, Near presents his conclusions to the President of the United States and reveals himself as L's true successor. Shortly afterward, Near becomes the head of the SPK and continues the search for Kira. After making contact with "L" (Light Yagami), Near begins to suspect that "L" is also Kira.

Near Appearance

Near has long, messy white hair. His eyes are gray, though they appear golden in the second opening. He is small in build and always sits on the floor, much like L. His clothing has always been the same: a white shirt open at the chest and cuffs like pajamas. Instead of putting his finger to his mouth, as L did, he twists his finger into a lock of his hair.

Near Personality

He could be even colder than L, and also much calmer, his facial expression unchanged regardless of the situation, devoid of emotion. His social interaction is even worse; he can't develop his superior abilities unless someone is looking after him. His way of thinking is almost identical to L's, being completely analytical and calculating. However, he also relies on his intuition to guide the investigation. He dislikes going out and maintains minimal contact with other people. He seems to lack tact, as in his first lecture seen in the anime, he essentially said that L was a loser (although he admitted that L surpassed him in several aspects). Furthermore, when people attacked the building he was in, he threw L's inheritance at them simply to escape.

Like L, Mello, and, in general, all the gifted children raised by Wammy's House, Near has a quirk, which in his case is with toys, since throughout the series he is seen playing with different types of them, including robots, trains, target shooting, puzzles, dice, etc.

Near History

After L's "death," Near begins working for the United States with the SPK. He quickly deduces that Light is impersonating L and that he is actually Kira. After discovering that Mikami possessed the Death Note and was responsible for the murders, and that Mello kidnapped Takada, Near manages to switch Mikami's Death Note with a fake, allowing him to orchestrate the final confrontation that exposes Light. Following this encounter between the SPK and the police, Near adopts the name L and assumes L's identity, aided by the surviving SPK members. In the special "Three Years Later," Near takes over as the new L (chronologically the third). A new Kira emerges who had obtained a Death Note from the shinigami Meadra (Midori in Spanish). This shinigami had acquired more Death Notes by bribing the Shinigami King with 13 apples he had taken from the human world. This new Kira murdered elderly people to "ease their pain." When the survivors of the SPK asked Near why he wasn't doing anything, he replied that it was because he was thinking about what the previous L (L Lawliet) would do.

Mello

Mello (メロ, Mero?), whose real name is Mihael Keehl (ミハエル=ケール, Mihaeru Kēru?), is, along with Near, one of the candidates to succeed L. He shares with Near the fact that they both grew up in an orphanage, both are gifted, and both have an obsession. In Mello's case, it's chocolate.

Mello

Mihael is of medium height, slim build, and pale complexion. He has shoulder-length blond hair with very long bangs that reach his eyes. His eyes are blue in the anime and black in the manga. He wears tight black clothing, usually made of leather. His attire consists of a zippered leather shirt, tight leather pants, and gloves. In the manga, he is seen wearing a rosary, which was modified in the anime.

After the explosion he caused himself, he shows a burn scar on his face, which covers almost the entire left side of his face.

Mello

Mihael is temperamental, cold at times. He has an impulsive personality, always wanting to compete with Near trying to see who is able to find Kira first. However, he is the most emotional of all of L's successors, so his actions are always extreme and thoughtless, as he is moved more by the impulse of the moment than by true reflection. Likewise, and according to statements by his authors, Mello is the most empathetic of all of them, being unable to understand that someone could hurt another person in cold blood, but precisely because of his impulsiveness he is the one who ends up doing this.

For these reasons, Mihael seems to have a difficult and violent character, due to being sociable and dynamic. He hides his feelings, due to his dark past. Like the highly intelligent individuals, and the other characters in Wammy's House, he manifests a mania, in his case it is eating chocolate bars.

Mello

Ohba had considered that he and Near could be L's sons, but this was eventually ruled out. Ohba stated in an interview that Mello loses his typical temper with Matt and with a close friend he met at Wammy's, the same one who helped him travel to the United States, as he considers them to be good and only friends. Ohba said he added the chocolate addiction because it represents all sweets and that fit with the story of the United States. Ohba added the scar after the explosion because he felt it would make it "deeper" and "more human." Originally, Mello was going to be called Near and vice versa, but due to an error in the manga, their names were switched. Interestingly, Mello's birthday is on National Cocoa Day in the USA Of all the gifted individuals, he is the only one who shows a kind of reaction to events. Madonna's wardrobe in the "JUMP" video is inspired by Mihael Keehl. He was similar to L because, like L, he had a craving for sweets; however, in Mello's case, it was only for chocolate. Mello's name didn't have any particular meaning, but his real name, Mihael, is a variation of Miguel, which means "He who seeks God," given that Mello always appears carrying some kind of crucifix, even on his pistols, and that he dies in a church, suggesting he is a religious character. This is also evident on the cover of volume 8 of the manga he stars in, where behind him is a statue of the Virgin Mary on an altar.

Ryuk

Ryuk (リューク, Ryūku?) is a shinigami who indirectly gives a Death Note to Light Yagami. Bored in the Shinigami Realm, he manages to steal a second Death Note and drops it into the Human World for someone to find, all with the goal of finding entertainment, something nonexistent for him in his world, thus setting in motion all the events of the plot. That Death Note was found by Light, who uses it to try to create a new world, free of criminals and evil people. Ryuk has a human-like appearance, a slender build, light gray (slightly bluish) skin, spiky black hair, large yellow eyes with red irises, a bat-like nose, and blue lips with sharp teeth. His arms are very long, he has rings on his fingers, and he possesses large feathered wings on his back that allow him to fly, which he can retract completely. Ryuk is different from the other Shinigami, who prefer to spend most of their time sleeping or playing. This bores him greatly, so he decides to find ways to entertain himself in the Human World. Another very significant characteristic of Ryuk is his love for apples, since those in the Shinigami world are unpleasant-tasting and gritty, making these apples incredibly juicy for him. He adores them so much that when he goes a while without eating one, he begins to writhe and behave like a small person due to the intense withdrawal he experiences. He has a very unusual personality for a Shinigami, as he is very curious and proactive, something truly rare in his species. It could be said that Ryuk feels no attachment to anything, as he limits himself to being a mere observer.

Ryuk

When Light, the human to whom he is linked through the notebook, begins to indiscriminately murder criminals and other people who oppose his ideology, he only carries out actions he orders him to perform if he believes it will allow him to continue enjoying himself. Little is known about him, among which it is known that he is male, although it is unknown that Shinigami can reproduce, and that he occupies level 6 within the ranking of the Shinigami world. He loves apples, even though they were one of the few things he tasted in the human world. In the OVA Visions of a God, he appears somewhat aged and weak according to other shinigami, since after Light Yagami passed away, he stopped writing names and his life stopped extending. He believed that Light was not a God as he thought, but something else, probably a shinigami. He advised Meadra to drop his death note to the ground and said that if he was lucky, someone like Light would pick it up. When flying, it can be clearly seen that its wings have feathers

Shinigami's

Shinigami (死神, God of death) are gods of the Shinigami World, who cause the death of humans through a Death Note. Despite being gods (or angels), Shinigami are not at all responsible, much less serious. Currently, Shinigami don't wish to kill humans; they only gamble and play games of chance with each other. According to Ryuk, if they see a Shinigami killing a human, they laugh at you for "working so hard." Shinigami vary in appearance, and their bodies are constructed in ways impossible by human standards. Upon death, their bodies turn to dust. Only humans who have touched a Death Note can see a Shinigami's true form.

They generally wear dark clothing and most go barefoot. The purpose of the Shinigami is to end human lives. They do this using a supernatural notebook called the Death Note. This notebook allows them to end human lives before their time by adding the remaining lifespan of the human to their own (for example, a man who should have lived to sixty but is killed at forty adds twenty years to the life of the Shinigami who kills him). In this way, a Shinigami can extend their life indefinitely and can survive even if shot in the head. To complement this, their eyes allow them to visualize the names and lifespans of humans simply by looking at their faces. For the Death Note to work, the Shinigami must be thinking about the person's face while writing the name. The cause of death can then be written; otherwise, the human will simply die of a heart attack.

Death Note

All Shinigami must possess a Death Note. This can be lost and fall into the Human World. Once there, it can be picked up by a human, who can use it for any purpose. The Shinigami who lost the Death Note must follow the human everywhere until they relinquish the notebook, it changes hands, or they die. Finally, the Shinigami must kill the owner of their Death Note and return to the Shinigami World.

Shinigami's

Shinigami possess special eyes. With them, they can see a human's name written in the native language of their country of birth, their lifespan, and their date of death. When a human possesses a Death Note, they can make a pact that grants them these eyes. From then on, their vision is enhanced, and they gain the same abilities as a Shinigami with these eyes. Making this pact costs the Death Note owner half their lifespan, and if they lose possession of the Death Note, they will lose the eyes and will not regain the life they paid for. Finally, the user will be unable to see the death date or remaining lifespan of another Death Note owner or any Shinigami.

Shinigami's rank

Apparently, each Shinigami possesses a Rank. These are represented by numbers. The lower the number, the higher the Shinigami's Rank. For example, Gook has a Rank of 7 and spends his time gambling and nothing else. In contrast, Armonía Justin Beyondormason has a Rank of 2 and is an important Shinigami, the right-hand man of the Shinigami King. It is unknown what determines a higher or lower Rank, and it is assumed that the Shinigami King grants them.

Shinigami's life

As mentioned before, Shinigami increase their lifespan by killing humans with their Death Notes. Each time a person is killed, the years remaining in their life are added to the Shinigami's. By regularly killing humans, this practice makes them virtually immortal. There are only two ways a Shinigami can die:

Not killing for a very long time and then having their lifespan end (Ryuk has said that he has had comrades who did not kill for centuries and ended up dying). Falling in love with a human and saving them from death. When this happens, the Shinigami's body turns into a kind of rust dust, leaving only their Death Note, and the years of life they had left pass to the person they saved (an example of this is Jealous and Rem).

Shinigami's Abilities

Intangibility Shinigami can become intangible, ensuring their complete secrecy in the human world (despite being invisible there). Even so, they have been seen interacting with objects (apples and chocolate) as well as with their Death Notes, even though these have become objects in the human world and with their respective owners (such as when Rem lifted Misa's hair or when she covered her mouth with her hand). However, in the live-action (non-canon) film, Light tries to touch Ryuk but cannot (he passes right through him). Shinigami Eyes A Shinigami can see the names and lifespans of humans simply by looking at them. They can also grant this ability (without losing it themselves) to someone who has touched their notebook, simply by placing their hand on their head. Furthermore, their eyes provide them with enhanced vision (Mikami opened a door a crack in the penultimate episode of the anime and could see everyone in front of her clearly; she also appears to be using her eyes without glasses). Flight It has been observed that Shinigami use wings that fold up onto their bodies as their usual means of transportation. These allow them to travel great distances in a short time (e.g., Sidoh left Kanto one night and arrived in Los Angeles the next day). Shinigami become addicted to the first thing they eat in the human world. This is why Ryuk constantly eats apples. Rem, on the other hand, doesn't have any addiction, since Misa is a model and doesn't eat much food that a Shinigami might consume.

Death Note

The Death Note (デスノート, Desu Nōto?) is a supernatural notebook with the power to kill anyone whose name is written in it. The original owners of these notebooks are the Shinigami (Death Gods), who use them to kill humans and thus sustain their own lives, but there are also exceptional cases where humans can use them, such as Kira. Shinigami. Many of them are black and plain, with no writing on the cover (like Rem's). However, sometimes Shinigami write their name or the words "Death Note" on it. Those that do have writing on the cover can have it in any language, whether English (Sidoh's Death Note) or a Shinigami language (Jealous's Death Note). Death Notes can take various forms besides a notebook; one example is a scroll. The Rules of the Death Note state that their form varies depending on the human era. The inside of one of these notebooks is similar to any other, containing lined white pages. The notebook takes effect when someone's name is written in it. No matter how many names are written in a Death Note, it will never run out of pages, likely because when one page is used up, another is automatically generated. Death Notes are made of an unknown material; however, they feel and look like any other ordinary notebook, and their pages can be torn out and burned. Human science cannot analyze or draw any conclusions about these notebooks.

Death Note

The notebook is primarily used to assassinate humans by writing their first and last name in it, provided the face of the intended victim is kept in mind so that others with the same name are not affected. Upon writing the intended victim's first and last name, they will die of a heart attack within the next forty seconds unless a cause of death is specified by writing the circumstances of the demise within the following six minutes and forty seconds. However, despite its relatively simple use, there are a number of rules and restrictions unknown even to the Shinigami themselves. The notebook cannot distort reality, as the person's death must be from a plausible cause. If the cause of death specified in the notebook is not met, the written cause of death is nullified, but the victim will still die of a heart attack. Furthermore, a person can only be manipulated to a certain extent before dying from the effects of the Death Note, with the limit being 23 days. However, it is possible to cause the death of a person from chronic diseases depending on the time they take to develop. When a Shinigami kills a human using a Death Note, the remaining years of that person's life are added to their own. Shinigami can lose their Death Notes in the Human World, though this is extremely rare. The first Shinigami seen to lose his was Ryuk (who dropped it intentionally), followed by Rem, although Ryuk himself tells Light that several Death Notes have appeared in his world in the past.

Death Note

Humans can obtain a Death Note if a Shinigami has lost it in the Human World. Humans typically use them to their advantage or simply to kill, though Light Yagami found a better use for it: to kill all criminals, create a New World, and become its god. Misa Amane supported Light, so she helped him using her Death Note and the Shinigami Eyes. When Higuchi takes possession of the notebook, he begins killing Yotsuba Corp.'s competition. Another Death Note owner was Jack Neylon, who used it to benefit Mello.

Death Note

Consequences of its use in humans Although its consequences have been largely ignored in the series, it's safe to say that the notebook's supernatural power extends beyond simply killing people, such as its ability to consume a human from the inside until they are devoid of feelings. Light Yagami was, in part, a victim of the notebook, since despite initially disbelieving in its existence, he was drawn to the Death Note and even used it to test its contents. Later, he would use it to cleanse the world. Once used, the notebook gradually becomes an addiction for its owner, to the point that they can't stop writing names in it. Light used it to carry out his plans, ruthlessly killing many people, including innocents who weren't his primary target but stood in his way. He even unintentionally caused his father's death. He also disregarded his "friendship" and camaraderie with L, killing him without remorse (at L's funeral, Light mocks him and proclaims his victory, laughing sadistically). Another consequence of the notebook is that the person who uses it cannot go to heaven or hell, although in the manga, in the penultimate chapter, it is stated that heaven and hell do not exist. A total of four notebooks are present in the Human World throughout the manga and anime. These notebooks are listed in the table below, along with the names of the Humans and Shinigami who possessed them. The notebooks are referred to using the name of the Shinigami who originally owned them.

Death Note Rules

The human whose name is written in this notebook will die. This notebook will have no effect unless the person writing in it has the person's face in mind at the moment of writing their name. Therefore, people who share the same name will not be affected. If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the person's name, it will happen. If the cause of death is not specified, the person will simply die of a heart attack. After writing the cause of death, the details of the death must be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds. This notebook will become the property of the human world once it touches the ground. The owner of the notebook can recognize the image and voice of its original owner, that is, a god of death. The human who uses this notebook cannot go to heaven or hell. If the time of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the cause of death as a heart attack, it can be manipulated and can take effect within 40 seconds of writing the name. The human who touches the Death Note can recognize the image and voice of its original owner, a god of death, even if he is not the owner of the notebook. The person in possession of the Death Note is possessed by a god of death, its original owner, until they die. If a human uses the notebook, a death god will usually appear before them within the next 39 days of them using the notebook. The gods of death, the original owners of the Death Note, do not, in principle, do anything that would help or prevent the deaths in the notebook. A god of death is not obligated to fully explain how to use the notebook or the rules that apply to the human who possesses it. A god of death can lengthen his life by writing human names in the notebook, but humans cannot do the same.

Death Note Rules

A person can shorten their own life by using the notebook. The human who becomes the owner of the Death Note can, in exchange for half of their remaining lifespan, obtain the eyes of the God of Death, which will allow them to see a human's name and remaining lifespan when they look through them. A death god cannot be killed even if their heart is stabbed with a knife or their head is shot with a gun. However, there are ways to kill a death god, which are generally unknown to the death gods themselves. The conditions for death will not be carried out unless it is physically possible for that human or reasonably assumed to be carried out by that human. The specific extent of the condition for death is unknown even to the gods of death. So, you must examine and find out. A page taken from the Death Note, or even a fragment of the page, contains the full effects of the notebook. The writing tool can be anything, ((for example, cosmetics, blood, etc.)) as long as it can write directly on the notebook and remains as legible letters. Even the original owners of the Death Note, the gods of death, don't know much about the notebook. You can also write the cause and/or details of death before entering the individual's name. Be sure to enter the name before the written cause of death. You have approximately 19 days (according to the human calendar) to enter a name. Even if you don't possess the Death Note, the effect will be the same if you can recognize the person and their name to put in the space. The Death Note will not affect those under 780 days of age. The Death Note will become useless if the victim's name is misspelled four times.

Death Note Rules

"Suicide" is a valid cause of death. Basically, all humans are thought to possess the capacity to commit suicide. It is, therefore, not something "unbelievable to think about." If the individual's cause of death is either suicide or accident, and if the death leads to more deaths than planned, the person will simply die of a heart attack. This is to ensure that other lives are not affected. Even after the individual's name, time of death, and condition of death are entered into the Death Note, the time and condition of death can be altered as many times as desired, provided it is changed within 6 minutes and 40 seconds of the initial entry. However, this is only possible before the victim dies. Whenever you want to change anything written in the Death Note within 6 minutes and 40 seconds after you wrote it, you must first erase the characters you want to delete with two straight lines. As you can see above, the time and condition of death can be changed, but once the victim's name has been written, the individual's death can never be avoided (except in certain cases where other rules apply). If you lose the Death Note or it is stolen, you will lose ownership of it unless you recover it within 490 days. If you have traded the power of a Death God's eyes, you will lose both the power of the eyes and the memory of the Death Note once you relinquish ownership of it. Furthermore, the remaining half of your lifespan will not be restored. You can lend the Death Note to someone else while retaining ownership. Subleasing it to yet another person is also possible. Whoever borrows the Death Note will not be followed by a Grim Reaper. The Grim Reaper always remains with the owner of the Death Note. Furthermore, the user cannot negotiate the Grim Reaper's presence.

Death Note Rules

When the owner of the Death Note dies while the notebook is being lent out, its ownership will be transferred to the person who is holding it at that time. If the Death Note is stolen and the owner is killed by the thief, ownership will automatically be transferred to the thief. When the same name is written in more than two Death Notes, the notebook that was filled in first will take effect, regardless of the time of death. If the writing of the same name in more than two Death Notes is completed within a difference of 0.06 seconds, it is considered simultaneous; the Death Note will not take effect and the individual written in it will not die. The god of death must at least possess a Death Note. That Death Note must never be lent or written in by a human. Exchanging and writing in the Death Note between the gods of death is no problem. If the god of death decides to use the Death Note to kill the murderer of an individual he favors, the individual's life will be extended, but the god of death will die. The deceased god of death will disappear, but the Death Note will remain. Ownership of this Death Note is usually transferred to the next god of death who touches it, but it makes sense that it should be returned to the Great God of Death. Only by touching each other's Death Note can human individuals who possess the Death Note in the human world recognize the appearance or voice of each other's god of death.

Death Note Rules

An individual with the power of the eyes of a death god can know the name and lifespan of other humans simply by looking at their face. By possessing the Death Note, an individual gains the ability to kill and ceases to be a victim. From this point on, a person with the Death Note cannot see the lifespan of other Death Note owners, including themselves. However, it is not actually necessary for the individual to see their own lifespan or that of other Death Note owners. The god of death must not tell humans the names or life expectancy of the individuals he sees. This is to avoid confusion in the human world. It is necessary beforehand for the Death Note to be used in the human world that a living god of death ensures that humans in the human world use it. It is very difficult to consider that a god of death who has followed a human can die, but if he dies, the Death Note he brought to the human world will not lose its power. To see the names and lifespans of humans using the power of the Death God's eyes, the user must look at more than half of that person's face. When looking from top to bottom, they must see at least from the top of the head to the nose. If they only look at the eyes and below them, they will not be able to see the person's name and lifespan. Furthermore, even if some parts of the face, such as the eyes, nose, or mouth, are covered, if they can see essentially the entire face, they will be able to see the person's name and lifespan. It is still unclear how much exposure is needed to know the name and lifespan, and this needs to be verified.

Death Note Rules

If the above conditions are met, names and lifespans can be seen in photos and images, no matter how old they are. However, this is sometimes affected by the intensity and size of the image. Furthermore, names and lifespans cannot be seen in facial drawings, no matter how realistic they may be. Those with the power of the eyes of the god of death will have eyesight above 3.6 in human measurement, regardless of their original eyesight. Individuals who lose ownership of the Death Note will also lose their memory of using it. This does not mean they will lose all memories from the day they acquired it until the day they lose possession, but rather that they will only lose memories involving the Death Note. Whenever an individual owning more than two Death Notes loses possession of one of them, they will no longer be able to recognize the appearance or voice of the Death God associated with that Death Note. The Death God himself will depart, but all memories involving that Death Note will remain as long as they retain ownership of at least one Death Note.

Death Note Rules

The god of death should not be in the human world without a specific reason. The conditions for remaining in the human world are as follows: When the Death Note of the god of death is given to a human. Basically, finding a human to transmit the Death Note to must be done from the world of the death gods, but if it is within 82 hours this can also be done in the human world. When a death god pursues a human with the intention of killing him, as long as it is within 82 hours of following him, the death god may be in the human world. The god of death must not give the Death Note directly to a child under 6 years of age (according to the human calendar). The Death Note should not be given to a child under the age of 6, but Death Notes that have been thrown into the human world, and are part of the human world, can be used by humans of any age with the same effect. If you simply write, "die by accident" for the cause of death, the victim will die of a natural accident after 6 minutes and 40 seconds from the time you write it. Even if only one name is written in the Death Note, if it affects and causes other humans not written in it to die, the cause of death of the victim will be a heart attack. If you write "die of illness" followed by a specific illness and the person's expected time of death, there must be enough time for the illness to develop. If the time limit is very tight, the victim will die of a heart attack 6 minutes and 40 seconds after the Death Note is filled in. If you write "die of illness" as the cause of death, but only specify a time of death without the name of the illness, the person will die of a suitable illness. However, the Death Note can only work within 23 days (in the human calendar). This is called the 23-day rule.

Death Note Rules

If you write, "die from disease" as before with a specific disease name, but without a specific time, if it takes more than 24 days for the human to die, the 23-day rule will not apply and the human will die at an appropriate time depending on the disease. When rewriting the cause and/or details of death, it must be done within 6 minutes and 40 seconds. You cannot change the victim's time of death, no matter how soon. You cannot kill humans aged 124 and older with the Death Note. You cannot kill humans with less than 12 minutes of life remaining (in human calculations). If you have negotiated the power of the eyes of a death god, you will see a person's primary life expectancy in the human world. The names you see with the power of a death god's eyes are the names needed to kill that person. You will be able to see the names even if that person is not registered in the family registry. The number of pages in the Death Note will never run out.
