plot

The series is set in the New York City borough of Manhattan. Jake Long is a descendant of a long line of shape-shifting dragons, and it is his duty to protect a community of magical creatures secretly living among the masses in New York City. He lived with his parents, Jonathan and Susan, as well as his 7-year-old sister, Haley. His grandfather and sister are also dragons, the dragon powers having skipped his mother's generation. His Caucasian father is unaware of his family actually being part-dragon.

Throughout the series, Jake was taught how to use his innate magical powers by his grandfather and a 600-year-old shar-pei named Fu Dog. Jake needs these powers to protect the other magical creatures of the city from various malevolent beings, most notably the villainous Huntsclan led by the Huntsman. His best friends are Trixie and Spud, whom he skateboarded with. He was infatuated with Rose Rhodes, another schoolmate who, unknown to him, was the Huntsman's apprentice. The stories were driven by Jake's search for balance between his life as a schoolboy and his secret life as a powerful magical guardian.

Jake Long

Jake was raised in America and lives with his parents, Jonathan and Susan, and his younger sister Haley. A descendant of a family of magical dragons, his two best friends are the feisty Trixie Carter and seemingly dim-witted Arthur "Spud" Spudinski. Before his thirteenth birthday, Jake started getting glimpses of his dragon heritage. For example, during a race with Brad at Camp Mugwomp for the Mugwomp Cup, he unintentionally breathed fire, startling himself into tripping over a log to fall face first into mud, losing the race[5].

On his thirteenth birthday, his magical abilities emerged fully, and he was set to protect an underground magical community existing within his city and throughout the world. The emergence of his dragon powers also made him the first official magical dragon guardian of America; "The American Dragon". Under his grandfather’s training, Lao Shi, and his animal guardian, Fu Dog, Jake would be taught in the methods of his dragon abilities, and his duties as a magical guardian. Due to his youth and while still in training, his territorial home base has initially been mainly restricted to the area of New York. However, anytime he is anywhere else in America, such as the forests of New Jersey during a camping trip with his father, his authority extends to these other areas as well as he is destined to become the representative dragon for the whole country.

At first, he thought inheriting Magical Powers would be cool, but instead, due to his responsibilities as the American Dragon, his grades started slipping, he could not spend as much time with his friends as he used to, and he began to grow tired of Lao Shi's training techniques, which he could only see as stupid.

Although Jake is still in the early training stages to be the American Dragon, his destiny includes being the guardian, protector and champion to magical creatures secretly living alongside humans in and around New York City, and eventually the rest of the country. Among them are a herd of unicorns in Central Park, leprechauns on Wall Street, gargoyles nesting atop the Empire State Building, the Triborough Troll Bridge, a mystical community between NOHO and SOHO, and mermaids in the East River. According to his grandfather, the Greater New York is the American Dragon's territory and if he can make it here, he can make it anywhere. However, that means Jake must figure out how to control his newly awakened dragon abilities, such as fire breathing, flying and shapeshifting. Meanwhile, Grandpa must figure out how to decipher his hip-hop grandson's colloquial language style.

Jake lives in a West-side brownstone at 182 Shorn Eagle Dr[6]. His father, a human businessman, was completely unaware he married into a family of dragons. Jake's mother is a professional caterer who is also a dragon except she is human-locked, meaning she is unable to transform or utilize typical dragon abilities as often times they may skip a generation. Jake tries to ignore his brilliant yet pesky younger sister Haley, a nascent dragon, to no avail. Jake's Dragon Master is his wise Grandpa and the former Chinese Dragon who, upon arrival to the United States, established an electronics shop on Canal Street and took Jake under his wing. Despite the generation gap, Grandpa is patiently training Jake to master the fundamentals of being a dragon, unlock his potential, and to be on time for his lessons. Grandpa's sidekick, the not-so-patient Fu Dog, acts as Jake's animal guardian.

Jake initially comes off as the average, laid-back and flirtatious at times teenager who tries hard to present himself as a king of cool, to a certain degree of success. Jake is shown to have a particular passion for skateboarding and is very proficient at it as well. Unfortunately, more often than not, Jake has a tendency to be stubborn and, at times, careless, both of which tend to come back and bite him in the end. He frequently looks for shortcuts in his day-to-day life and usually pays the price for this when he fails to think things through. Though, in Jake’s defense, the responsibilities that he has do prove to be rather overwhelming. Another flaw in Jake’s character is that he occasionally loses his focus of the task at hand, but he does usually regain it when he has to.

Also, there are times when Jake is far too cocky and a bit too quick to leap into action, which has often backfired on him, especially when dealing with opponents who are smarter than he gives them credit for. Fortunately, though, when all is said and done, Jake proves to be a very responsible teenager, he is always quick to acknowledge when he is the one at fault and always takes it upon himself to set things right no matter what. He is also shown to be very resourceful when he has to be, frequently coming up with multiple plans and strategies on the fly and knowing when to use his grandfather’s lessons when they are needed.

Jake is shown to care deeply for those around him, but he is not always sensitive toward other people’s feelings. For example, he once spoke out against his father, Jonathan, which led to Jonathan feeling a bit hurt. He is shown to have a longstanding rivalry with his little sister, Haley, and he absolutely hates it when Haley lords her accomplishments over him and makes him look inferior by comparison. However, despite Jake’s issues with Haley, it is shown that he would not hesitate for a moment to help her when she needed him. Jake is, at times, put at odds with his grandfather, but even so, it is shown that he has nothing but respect for Lao Shi. He also has a very close bond with his animal guardian, Fu Dog.

Jake has nothing but loyalty toward his friends, Trixie and Spud, and they reciprocate this by being unquestionably loyal to him as well. At times, Trixie and Spud are often quick to inform Jake when his courses of action are not always right, but there are times when they go along with it and allow Jake’s actions to play out. Jake is also shown to be very trusting of his friends with almost everything, including his secret.

Finally, the person who Jake cares the most about is Rose. On one occasion, it was implied that he cares for her more than his own life. While many of his associates felt that Jake was making a mistake by having a crush on Rose, mainly due to her also being the Huntsgirl, Jake still trusted his love interest fully, mainly because she once had the perfect opportunity to slay him yet passed it up. Jake had trouble letting Rose go at first, but it did seem clear that he genuinely wanted to move on.

As a Dragon, Jake possesses a myriad of superhuman abilities native to his race from his maternal side. While he starts his career still learning them, these powers develop further and strengthen over time.

Physical Appearance In human form, Jake is a teenager with semi-long black, spiky hair with green highlights on the tip. His general/casual wear consists of a red jacket with yellow patches that somewhat conceals a white T-Shirt, blue cargo shorts, white socks and grey and blue shoes.

For formal wear, Jake wears a dark navy dress suit with red dress shirt, yellow necktie, and black and white dress shoes. At times[7][8][9][10], Jake wears a purple and black tuxedo.

In the first season when he turns into a dragon, he looks like a tall, muscular, red dragon with a yellow underbelly. His black hair stays the same, darker red wings and green spikes on his back and tail. He also has five-clawed hands and four-clawed feet. His claws are bluish grey. His first dragon form's appearance is a combination of his Asian heritage and his American heritage, although it is worth noting that in his first dragon form, Jake resembles a Western dragon (the European depiction).

In the second season, his dragon form's design changes drastically. He's thinner and a darker shade of red, and he now has four-clawed hands and two-clawed feet. His claws are black and small. His second and current dragon form's appearance is a combination of his Asian heritage and his American heritage like in the season one, although it is worth remembering that Jake visually resembles a Eastern dragon (the Chinese depiction) with some Western dragon traits.

Skills Dancing Skills: Jake is a great break-dancer this is also one of his natural skills. It is also worth noting this is not a dragon trait. Although it seems to be common in Jake's family, as his grandfather Lao Shi was a great dancer as well. Skateboarding: Jake is also great at skateboarding. He can do cool tricks and air flips with his board. JakeLong skateboard Jake's skateboard

His skateboard has a dragon similar to Rose's birthmark painted on it. While in human form, Jake mostly uses his board for transportation. Before Jake got his dragon powers, he used to hit the skate park with Spud and Trixie, but his dragon duties began to take up too much of his time spent with his friends. Gifted Athlete: Jake is great at acrobatics and can-do somersaults, backflips, and many other acrobatics, but this may be due to his dragon heritage. Also, this ability is mostly used while Jake is in human form.

Romance Rose (ex-girlfriend)

The HuntsClan

The Huntsclan is an order of human hunters who know about the magical underworld, dating back thousands of years. Their honor dictates the slaying or capture of magical creatures and the thievery of artifacts. They are equipped with ancient and futuristic weaponry and equipment. Their goal and mission is to rid the Earth of all magical creatures, which they seem to see as lesser beings. They believe that magical creatures are "unnatural" and need to be wiped out from the world.

Each member of the Huntsclan has a dragon birthmark somewhere on their body, otherwise known as the "Mark of the Huntsclan", commonly on their right palm and arm. The Huntsman's dragon birthmark is round his chest and face on the left hand side. The mark apparently is a recessive genetic trait. Rose was born with a mark, yet her biological parents and twin bore no sign of it. Huntsclan members monitored hospitals for infants with the mark and kidnapping such children.

In addition to their undercover infiltration of hospitals, such as the doctor or nurse attending Rose's birth, the clan also kept tabs on various contemporary communication lines in order to locate or gather information on the whereabouts of possible dragons or other magical creatures[4].

Eventually[3], all of the Huntsclan were destroyed by Rose's wish when she used the power of the crystal skulls to destroy the Huntsclan, including herself. After Rose's wish, she and Number 88 and 89… the cowardly apprentices of the Huntsman… were the only known Huntsclan left alive. During a trip to Hong Kong[1], it was revealed that Huntsclan bases all over the globe still existed. One of which was in Hong Kong, which was destroyed when Jonathan Long accidentally set off a self-destruct operation.

Levels of Huntsclan Huntsclan Trainee: Beginner-level students of the Huntsclan. They were young pupils who attended the Huntsclan Academy for education and training on how to slay different types of magical creatures. Their uniform consisted of a pantsuit with the appropriate "trainee number" embroidered on a patch worn on their arm sleeves, and a mask with holes for the mouth and eyes. Huntsclan Apprentice: Advanced-level students of the Huntsclan. They often participated in field-work and obeyed all Huntsclan Masters. Their major goal was working toward slaying a dragon and subsequent promotion to higher status within the Huntsclan. They wore the standard Huntsclan uniform sans cape and dragon-skull helmet. Huntsclan Master: Highest level of Huntsclan. Those who passed the necessary trials and had slain their first dragon were instantly made a true-member of the Huntsclan. They were leaders of the Huntsclan who wore a skull of the dragon they had slain as a helmet. They wore the standard Huntsclan uniform with a black cape and the dragon skull. However, only one is the true leader of the Huntsclan - The Huntsman. The Huntsclan Academy New recruits and current members attended the The Huntsclan Academy located in up-state New York. The facility was used to train various Huntsclan Trainees and Apprentices in the methods of slaying different magical creatures. There has been mention of punishment for disobeying or betraying the Huntsclan. One punishment involved a student fighting against the Kraken.

Notable members There are four major reoccurring members of the Huntsclan:

The Huntsman Jake's main enemy, the Huntsman, referred to as "Huntsmaster" by his subordinates, is the leader of the Huntsclan. The Dragon Council rates him as the fourth greatest threat to the magical community. He ultimately meets his demise when Rose wished the destruction of the Huntsclan. The Huntsman was originally Rose's first guardian because of the fact that he took her from her parents as an infant which ultimately resulted in giving her the idea that her parents were deceased.

#88 and #89 Two Huntsclan students that become the Huntsman's apprentices in the second season. They both act brave and arrogant, when in reality, they are cowards who run in fear at the sight of a dragon. Other than Rose, #88 and #89 are the only known Huntsclan members that were left alive after Rose's wish for the destruction of all Huntsclan was granted due to them resigning. However, they returned later still trying to be monster slayers[5]. It is interesting to note when the Huntsclan birthmarks started glowing, both Numbers 88 and 89 did not have glowing birthmarks, questioning if they faked their birthmarks, or if their vocally renouncing their Huntsclan memberships moments prior had been enough to avoid the same fate as the rest.

Huntsgirl/Rose Rose, Jake's paramour is a member of the Huntsclan. There is a birthmark on her right palm and wrist resembling a Chinese dragon. Jake eventually learns of her secret identity as the Huntsgirl and she, in return, eventually learns that Jake is the American Dragon. Contrary to expectation, Rose helped Jake throughout the show until the Huntsman learned of their relationship. After Rose's wish for all Huntsmen to be destroyed (herself included) was granted, Jake immediately wished that Rose had never become a member of the Huntsclan. Thus, resulting in a normal life for her but also meaning that their relationship had never been. However, she later learns of the relationship and helps Jake defeat the Dark Dragon. After defeating the Dark Dragon, both her and Jake start dating. breaking up shortly after

Rose

Physical Appearance Rose is well-known for being a considerably attractive young woman. She has long blonde hair, baby blue eyes (astral blue in Season 2) and a slender, almost hourglass-like figure. Also, in her next year of school, she is shown to have pierced ears. She has a birthmark on her right palm and wrist resembling a Chinese dragon, otherwise known as the "Mark of the Huntsclan".

When first encountered as the Huntsgirl, her Huntsclan uniform was green with black ku-lii slippers. However, upon returning to the Huntsclan Academy, it was changed to a dark purple-red with black boots.

Her initial casual clothing was a white t-shirt with blue borders, bright pink pants with a flower motif on the leg, clog sandals, and a pink headband. At the school dance, she wore a dark purple sleeveless dress with a black headband. Her winter attire consisted of a bright pink snow jacket, with white pants and pink shoes.

Later, after being sent back to the Academy, she wore a similar casual outfit, although her t-shirt was changed to a v-neck with no borders, the pants were darker without a flower motif, more flat looking sandals and she no longer wore a headband. Additionally, she wore pale blue earrings, a dark brown belt and a matching flower necklace. Her formal dress for this season was a dark mauve-colored dress, with only one sleeve on her right shoulder, a slit up the left leg, and a matching set of silver earrings and a bracelet. Her winter attire for this season was a puffy white coat, her regular pants, pink boots, along with matching pink mittens and toboggan.

Her outfits tended to change during her dream dates with Jake, often reflecting whatever setting or environment they were in. In her dream of Paris, Rose wore a white halter top, a long pink skirt, sandals, and her hair pulled back into a high ponytail. In Jake's dream of Hawaii she was seen wearing a bright pink strapless dress printed with yellow flowers, a white lei, and a purple hibiscus flower in her hair.

After the events of Homecoming and her life subsequently rewritten, Rose now wore a white cropped t-shirt, a purple skirt, tennis shoes, and a blue flower necklace similar to her old one.

After moving to Hong Kong, she wore her new school's uniform which consisted of a white t-shirt with a dark blue and gold striped tie, a matching blue and green plaid skirt, and some navy blue Mary Janes. During the final fight with the Dark Dragon, she wore an outfit somewhat similar to her Huntsgirl uniform, a maroon turtleneck shirt with matching pants, a black jacket, black boots, and black gloves, with her hair pulled back into a braid.

Personality Initially, her two sides were kept a secret, and as Rose was generally sweet and caring, but rather modest and somewhat shy. As the Huntsgirl, her good-hearted and sweet personality was almost the complete opposite: a daring, dedicated, and somewhat vicious persona filled her duties as a Huntsclan apprentice. She shared the same beliefs of the Huntsclan – of the vile and unnatural nature of magical creatures, especially dragons – and was compelled to carry out actions with that mindset.

Rose's more violent nature as the Huntsgirl often surfaced in her normal identity as she began to try and associate with Jake and his duties. It also caused her more "normal" life as Rose to surface in her duties as the Huntsgirl, which had her being perceived as acting oddly in the face of the Clan and her superior.

After she returned from the Academy with her new goal of helping Jake out, she grew very comfortable yet cautious around him out of fear of their relationship putting them both in danger. Around the time Jake's skin began molting, she appeared comfortable with lightly teasing him about the excessive amount of hair gel he used. Rose came off much more relaxed and carefree during their dream dates, away from the prying eyes of the Huntsman.

Natural Talents and Abilities, and Interests Huntsman TA 14 Rose/Huntsgirl with Huntsman

A few of her "normal" interests included an obsession over teen sensation Jaren MacCarther[1], as well as a talent for acting as she won the lead female role in the Millard Fillmore Middle School production of Antony and Cleopatra[2].

More of her natural abilities can be illustrated through her acts as the Huntsgirl. Rose has amazing acrobatic skills, as she is seen making tremendous leaps and bounds while fighting with large magical creatures[3][4]. She also has skill in hand-to-hand fighting and other physical combat techniques as well as skilled use in almost all of the Huntsclan's frequently used weaponry, of which the most primary one being a staff/spear which all Huntsclan members seem to carry. She is also a good archer with excellent accuracy[5]. She has also shown a somewhat deep understanding of various magical creatures and items, even discovering the various aspects of the "Dream Corridor" through her Dream Charm

Trixie Carter

She is sassy, vivacious, and somewhat of a tomboyish character. Although initially annoyed at Jake for how long he kept his secret from her, she liked to help protect the magical community. She’s supportive of both Jake and Spud, but for a while, she has shown a dislike and distrust toward Rose and was a bit unsupportive of Jake's feelings for her[3], but soon began to accept their relationship. She even comforted Jake when the two of them broke up during the school's Valentine's Day field trip event[4]. After Rose nearly surrendered herself to save Jake and every magical creature in the world[5], she tried to help Jake move on.

She is also a trustworthy friend because even though Jake's grandfather did not initially trust her and Spud, they kept Jake's dragon secret[6].

She can be very rude and inconsiderate because she threw away her longtime friendship with Spud and Jake just to be with the "cool" girls and have girl talk with the cheer squad. But in the end, she saves both of her friends and proves to be considerably loyal[7].

Physical appearance Trixie is an African-American teenager with black hair (matches her eyes) that she ties into puffs using purple scrunchies. In season 1, She wears a cropped blue tank top with a red butterfly on it and a purple T- shirt underneath making her stomach exposed. She also wears green cargos and lavender/purple sneakers.

In season 2, Trixie has dark brown eyes, though her hairstyle is roughly the same. She now wears a blue short-sleeved hoodie with a drawn panda on it and a pastel blue long-sleeved shirt underneath. She also wears baggy olive green pants and grey sneakers.

Family Trixie's presumably an only child and her immediate family consists of herself, her mother, her father, and her grandmother (not to be confirmed if maternal or paternal). Trixie's father is a fighter pilot for the United States Air Force[8] while her mother works for an airline (either as an attendant or a pilot). Since Trixie's parents are often away for long periods of time (more so in her father's case), Trixie's grandmother appears to be her primary caregiver/parental figure.

Trixie's family appears to be relatively wealthy (or, at the very least, financially well-off), because Mrs. Carter often buys her daughter designer clothing whenever she goes out-of-town (such as to every foreign country). However, Trixie doesn't normally wear the clothes, as they aren't her usual style.[7].

Talents, interests, and abilities Trixie has great talent in cheerleading and acrobatics, although her complete fight with the Millard Fillmore Middle School cheer squad has turned her off from using them[7]. She enjoys skateboarding and hanging out with her friends. She also has a big interest in money, as well as great interests in biology and aspires to become "Doctor Trixie Carter"[9][10].

Love interests She has a big crush on another student in her school named Kyle Wilkins[4]. She constantly boasts about her crush and will let everyone know about it.

She also once accidentally flirts and dated with this one boy at a video game convention who she doesn't know and who is wearing a costume so she doesn't know who he is, thinking he was someone her age. She totally freaked out when she found out the truth about him. He turns up to be around 8-years-old, his height was boosted up by the help of his bulky costume, and the younger brother of Kyle Wilkins

Arthur Spudinski

Appearance Spud has apricot skin with small faint freckles on his cheeks, spiky brown hair with white ends that he generally hides using an olive-green beanie and black eyes. He wears a baggy dark blue t-shirt with yellow stripes on the chest and sleeves, an orange long-sleeved shirt that he wears underneath the dark blue t-shirt, baggy brown pants and grey and blue sneakers. He also wears black fingerless gloves and an olive-green beanie.

His appearance in season 2 is mostly the same, except he has much rounder facial features compared to season 1.

Personality Old School Training (67) Arthur Spudinski as he appears in season one

49534853443734747434 Arthur Spudinski as he appears in season two

Spud is the best friend of Jake and Trixie. He is extremely loyal and will do anything to help them. Although seemingly slow-witted, he often comes up with intelligent things to say at random times, much like the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz. He's actually a genius but tries to hide it[1] in order to live an easier and carefree life. Spud has a tremendous fear of clowns that started when he was five years old, and a clown kidnapped and raised him for 2 years[2]. He also has an obsession with mermaids and dreams of becoming a "merman"[3].

Talents, interests and abilities At first, Spud doesn't appear to be particularly smart and often spends his time goofing around and making a fool of himself. It's only later that Spud shows a very comprehensive technological knowledge. He owns a laptop computer that sports surveillance capabilities and other advanced functions. He uses this laptop computer to spy on Jake when he’s getting ready for bed.

Spud used his computer to decode the encryption in the Huntsclan teleportation system, allowing his friends and him to intercept the teleportation of Huntsboys Numbers 88 and 89 (the same episode shows Spud's father as an uptight intellectual who Spud resents, perhaps explaining his current "slacker" attitude)[4]. He once developed a global-positioning device to track his cheerleader crush, Stacey[5].

It’s revealed that Spud is, in fact, a genius, and scored a perfect mark on a government issued standardized test, which was a first for Millard Fillmore Middle School. Despite this, Spud generally prefers not to use his genius IQ, as he fears that upon the discovery of his intelligence the ensuing pressure wouldn’t allow him to enjoy his life[1]. He believes that there should be a balance between working hard and having fun.

Spud also has the entire works of Shakespeare and the curve of Jake’s buttocks committed to memory.[6]

Like his close friends, Jake & Trixie, he is also a skilled skateboarder.

Heritage Judging by the -ski suffix in his last name "Spudinski", he’s most likely of Eastern European heritage.

Magical Background Throughout the series, there have been several hints that Spud may possess a magical background. Spud mentioned that his great-grandfather used to be a magician, albeit apparently not a very good one. During the talent show in which he does a magician act in honor of his relative, Spud unknowingly uses a magical incantation thought to have been lost for centuries to seal a Djinn away; it is, in fact, the catchphrase his 'super gramps' taught him when he was younger[7].

The Gorgon sisters remark about how Spud is the spitting image of the warrior Perseus, who originally sealed them away. However, this might be due to the Spartacus costume for the Fighting Trojans mascot he was wearing at the time and does not necessarily mean he is related to the ancient hero[5].

Spud also mentions his family's tales of a mermaid city in the East River[8].

It is interesting to note that Spud himself appears to have a relation with magic that may hint to a magical background. For example, he has displayed mastery with the use of two magical wands while battling Pandarus[1] without any instructions or training beforehand, though he had trouble remembering what the spells would do. Spud once maximized the smell of an onion, using a powerful voice, to defeat one of the giant bugs in the principal's room that Sigmund Brock sent[9]. He also gains magical frog-like powers in in one episode[10], although he goes back to being human with no magical abilities at all in the end.

Love Interests Stacey Wintergrin Spud and Stacey Spud shows an obsession toward a cheerleader named Stacey Wintergrin. His fixation on her is so great that he even goes as far as to create a global positioning device to track her. He develops several plans and ploys in order to win her love but is constantly rejected by her no matter what he does to attract her attention.

However, Stacey finally develops feelings for Spud, though Spud thinks it's because of the deal he made with the Gorgon Fury[11]. It is soon revealed that Spud did, in fact, win over her heart on his own and that magic had nothing to do with it. They seem to start dating at this point, though Stacey insists they cannot be seen together or else her reputation would be ruined.

Spud later became Stacey's graduation partner[12]. From this it is believed that they are most likely officially dating and that their relationship has become more public.

Relationships Jake Long Main article: Jake Long Jake and Spud are like brothers. Both care about each other's well-being, which is demonstrated multiple times. Spud was shocked to learn about Jake's dragon status and wanted to be of help to Jake and his actions are of great help to him.

Sometimes they fight, but in the end they both know they need each other to help protect the magical world and to reach victory over enemies.

Trixie Carter Main article: Trixie Carter Spud and Trixie are very good and firm friends. They know each other very well and are a very solid team together. However, at this stage of their relationship, friendship is all they are. The mistaken prospect of their predicted marriage truly upset them because of Spud’s love for Jake[13], and they later reconfirmed there was nothing deeper to their mutual feelings toward each other.
