Japan Airlines Flight 123 (JAL 123/JL 123) was a Japanese commercial flight between Haneda International Airport in Tokyo and Osaka International Airport in Itami Hyogo. On August 12, 1985, the Boeing 747SR operating the flight, registered as JA8119, crashed 44 minutes after takeoff atop Mount Takamagahara 100 km (62 mi) from Tokyo, due to decompression. [1] The crash site was later renamed Osutaka O'ne. It remains in history as the world's largest single-aircraft disaster and the second-largest aviation accident of all time, after the 1977 Tenerife crash and excluding the September 11, 2001 attacks (as these were terrorist attacks, not accidents).
