Rebekah Mikaelson is the only daughter of Esther and Mikael Mikaelson, and the sixth of seven siblings. Her family is originally from Europe, but her family moved to the New World before she and most of her siblings were born. While still human, she and her family lived with the werewolves, hiding on nights of the full moon; but on one of those nights, Henrick and Niklaus, curious about werewolves, decided not to hide, resulting in the death of the youngest of the Henrick brothers.

After the loss, her parents decided to become a stronger species than werewolves, so taking advantage of the fact that Esther's lineage came from witches, she performed a spell against the laws of nature, thus transforming her children and husband into the first vampires on earth. But with power came weaknesses, a few days after her transformation, she along with her brothers and father, realized that walking under the sunlight burned them, that it was no longer possible to enter their neighbors' house without being invited, that verbena burned them and the wood of the white robe with which her mother performed the spell, was the only thing that could bring death to the new immortals, so they decided to burn that tree. After a few weeks, her mother Esther was murdered by her father Mikael according to the words that Niklaus told her, from that day on she, along with her brothers Niklaus and Elijah, made a promise to never separate again and were forced to escape from their own father, who only sought Niklaus' death.
