Friedrich was born in Berlin on January 24, 1712, and was given the name Karl Friedrich at baptism. His father was the King of Prussia Friedrich Wilhelm I of the Hohenzollern dynasty, and his mother was Sophie Dorothea of ​​Hanover, daughter of the King of England George I. Friedrich was the third and eldest (his two older brothers died in infancy) son in this large royal family, where 14 children were born in total. The little prince was most favored and befriended by his older sister Wilhelmina, the future Margravine of Bayreuth.

His first tutor was a French émigré, Mademoiselle de Rocoul, who instilled in him a love for French literature. In his seventh year, Friedrich was placed under the supervision of a tutor, Dugan, who further strengthened his inclination towards everything French. His father sought to raise Friedrich as a warrior, but the prince was interested in music, philosophy, and dancing. As a result, Friedrich Wilhelm considered him a worthless heir and for a long time sought to pass the throne to his younger son, August Wilhelm, who was more to his tastes. The conflict with his despotic father resulted in an attempt to escape to England at the age of eighteen, which he decided to undertake together with Lieutenant Hans Hermann von Katte. The attempt failed, Friedrich and Katte were imprisoned in a fortress (Friedrich in Küstrin), after which Friedrich Wilhelm expressed his intention to try both of them for desertion and execute them. Friedrich, however, was promised a pardon on the condition that he renounce his rights to the throne, which he did not accept. Katte was indeed tried and beheaded, but in regard to Friedrich, his father encountered strong opposition to his intentions, first from the court (which refused to try the crown prince), and then from the War Council; diplomatic pressure from other European courts was added to this.
