childhood

Napoleon was born on August 15, 1769, in Ajaccio on the island of Corsica, to Carlo Maria Buonaparte and Maria Letizia Ramolino. Corsica had long been under the control of the Republic of Genoa. In 1755, Corsica freed itself from Genoese rule and from that time on it effectively existed as an independent state under the leadership of local landowner Pasquale Paoli, whose close assistant was Napoleon's father. The Buonaparte family were minor aristocrats, Napoleon's ancestors came from Florence and had lived in Corsica since 1529. Carlo Buonaparte, Napoleon's father, served as a judge and had an annual income of 22,500 livres, which he tried to increase by suing his neighbors for property.[11] Napoleon's mother, Maria Letizia Ramolino, was a very attractive and strong-willed woman, her marriage to Carlo was arranged by their parents. As the daughter of the late inspector general of Corsican bridges and roads, Letizia brought with her a large dowry and social status.[12][13] Napoleon was the second of 13 children, five of whom died at an early age. In addition to Napoleon himself, four of his brothers and three sisters survived to adulthood. Little is known about Napoleon's early childhood. As a child, he suffered from a dry cough, which may have been an attack of tuberculosis. According to his mother and older brother Joseph, Napoleon read a lot, especially historical literature. He found himself a small room on the third floor of the house and rarely came down from there, missing family meals. Napoleon later claimed that he first read Rousseau's Nouvelle Héloïse at the age of nine. However, his childhood nickname "Rabulione" (Italian: "Troublemaker") does not fit well with this image of a frail introvert.
