Like his brothers, Robert and Renly, Stannis is a big man — tall, broad-shouldered and wiry, Jon Snow notes that Stannis towers over him. He has dark blue eyes and a heavy forehead, only a fringe of black hair on his head, "like the shadow of a crown," and a short-cropped beard on a large jaw. The face is tense, like hardened skin, the cheeks are sunken, the lips are thin and pale. He also grinds his teeth regularly. Stannis Baratheon, Lord of Dragonstone and by the grace of the gods the rightful Heir to the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, was a broad-shouldered and wiry man. His face and body were covered with skin that had been tanned by the sun and turned hard as steel. People thought he was tough, and he really was. He was not yet thirty-five, but he was already very bald, and the remnants of black hair fringed his head behind his ears like the shadow of a crown. Stannis cut his sideburns short, and they ran in blue-black spots along his sunken cheeks to his rectangular jaw. His eyes looked like open wounds under heavy brows—dark blue, like the night sea. His mouth would have exasperated the funniest of buffoons.: with his pale, tightly compressed lips, he was made for harsh words and harsh commands — this mouth forgot about a smile, and did not know laughter at all. Sometimes at night, when the world was quiet, Maester Cressen thought he could hear Lord Stannis grinding his teeth on the other side of the castle.

Born in 264 BC in Storm's End, Stannis was the second son of Lord Steffon Baratheon and Lady Cassana Estermont. He had an older brother, Robert, and a younger brother, Renly. When Stannis was no more than four years old, his father took him and Robert to King's Landing. There, the brothers saw a powerful and strong-willed man sitting on the Iron Throne, and believed that this was King Aerys II Targaryen. Stannis was impressed, and he and Robert agreed that the king was as glorious and noble as dragons were scary. It was only many years later that Steffon told him that they had actually seen the Hand of the King, Tywin Lannister, since Aerys II had cut himself on the throne shortly before and the Hand had to be replaced. As a child, Stannis found a wounded female hawk, went out and called her Proud-Winged, but Robert nicknamed her Weak-Winged because she never flew higher than the treetops. In the end, the boy's great-uncle, Herbert, convinced him to take another bird, saying that he was only making a fool of himself with it.

In his youth, Stannis always stood in the shadow of his older brother. Whatever he did, Robert did it faster and better, these feelings remained until adulthood. Cressen, the maester of Storm's End, cared for him more than his other brothers, as he felt that he needed him the most, as the most unloved of the three[15]. Even in his youth, Stannis was an introverted man, an adult beyond his years, serious and joyless.
