Persona Attributes

Esméralda's appearance and personality

Described as being "the finest girl in France", Esmeralda is a tall and beautiful young Romani woman who is presumed to be in early twenties, with a slender yet curvy and athletic figure, medium-brown skin, dark maroon-brown lips, thick eyebrows and long, puffy and voluminous raven-black hair in which a pink ribbon is tied at the back. Her eyes are a distinctive emerald-green color, and it is implied that is where she got her name (since her name is the Spanish and Portuguese word for "emerald"). For attire, Esmeralda is dressed in one gold hoop-earring, an off-the-shoulder long-sleeved white top that exposes a bit of her cleavage, with a gold-striped turquoise bodice, a dark purple sarong with gold trimming and decorations, and a long lavender-colored skirt with a white petticoat. She accessorizes with a thick gold cuff-bracelet on her left wrist, as well as thinner bangle bracelets worn on both her wrist (one on her right and two on her left), and a matching anklet on her left ankle. Esmeralda is often barefoot in the first film, though in the sequel she starts wearing black flats with gray soles. Esmeralda is shown to be eloquent, street-wise, cunning, positive, moral, and intelligent. She was the sole individual in all of Paris to outright rebel against Frollo during his reign and was openly against the judge's accusations that the Roma were a gang of thieves who engaged in unholy practices of witchcraft. Due to this, she was often the target of arrest, but was able to outsmart and and evade Frollo's grasp time and time again, despite the odds against her. This would only exacerbate Frollo's tyranny, but Esmeralda was not one to sacrifice her freedom to placate Frollo. Even when she was finally captured, and seconds away from death, she remained fiercely defiant, knowing her worth, and refusing to degrade herself by surrendering to Frollo. Aside from this fiery nature, Esmeralda is ultimately a kind, loving, selfless soul. She was the first human in the film to

Claude Frollo's appearance and personality

Frollo is an aging man, shown by his wrinkled, care-worn face and thinning white hair. As the Minister of Justice and a high-ranking public official, Frollo is most frequently dressed in a black and purple robe, a purple jumpsuit, a purple and black striped tricorn hat with a red sash attached to the bottom, and black shoulder pads with red stripes. The inside of his shoulder pads are purple. He also wears rings on his fingers, two on the right and one on the left, with the jewels colored blue, red, and green. Claude Frollo is a rather complex person. A religious extremist and a dogmatist, Frollo is convinced that all his actions are justified because they are God's will, though he is a cruel and corrupt government official who uses his place in power to meet his own extreme ends, even employing common thugs to enforce his interpretation of God's will while posing as "soldiers". This makes him feared and reviled throughout the city. Although Paris' anti-Romani sentiments appear to be systemic, the persecution of the Roma appears to be advocated by Frollo, who is determined to eliminate the Roma scattered throughout Paris, as their indulgence in what Frollo calls "witchcraft and sorcery" is infectious to those around them, according to him. Frollo has also shown a mild sadistic streak, as he briefly smiles while his ex-captain of the guard is tortured and takes pleasure in burning Esmeralda at the stake who survives. Surprisingly, Frollo has been known to be a somewhat forgiving person.

Quasimodo's appearance and personality

Quasimodo is a muscular young man with slender legs. His back is curved with kyphosis, resulting in a large hump above his right shoulder. His face is somewhat squashed, with a large upturned nose and a large lump above his left eye, a receding chin and a massive central incisor. He has fair skin, red hair, and teal eyes. His clothing is comprised of a short-sleeved green tunic, brown tights, and dark teal shoes. In the second film, he gets newer clothes consisting of a burgundy and violet striped tunic and hat, and a purple cape. His hat initially came with two feathers that were eaten by Djali. Though some would have regarded him with fear due to his appearance, Quasimodo is kind and gentle with a curious and trusting nature. Because he was raised in isolation by his master, Frollo, he was naïve to the realities of the world and Frollo's intentions until he was grown. However, despite Frollo's warnings about the cruelties of the outside world, especially Roma like Esmeralda, Quasimodo never regarded them personally with violence or contempt. Rather, he looked forward to the day when he could live among other people, even if only for a day, and envied the most simple of the day-to-day lives of normal Parisians. Since Notre Dame was his home, he regarded the cathedral and bell tower with great attachment, going so far as to name all the bells he rang. Even after he was accepted into society, he chose to remain within his beloved church. Quasimodo is a shy soul and was initially fearful of letting anyone see his face. His only companions aside from Frollo were his gargoyle friends, Victor, Hugo, and Laverne

Phoebus's appearance and personality

Phoebus is a muscular man in his 30s with fair skin, dark blue eyes, shoulder-length blond hair, and a small goatee. He mostly wears golden armor and blue clothing underneath and a blue cape, and underneath these, he wears a white shirt and brown pants. The Disney Animators chose to deviate from the book and created a down-to-earth Phoebus who is far less the dimwitted, womanizing cad that he is portrayed in the book. Though he tends to over-analyze and act like he knows what he's doing, he is described as a soldier who is sarcastically witty, brave, confident, and enjoys finding humor in situations. He also embodies the spirit of the Golden Rule: Treat others the way you want to be treated. Gary Trousdale admits that what he most likes about Phoebus is that "although he can keep a straight face when it's required of him, you can tell deep down, he'd rather tell a joke." Phoebus is almost always seeming to get into arguments, even with Esmeralda. Out of Frollo and his men, Phoebus is the only one that cleverly sees through the disguise of Esmeralda

Clopin Trouillefou's appearance and personality

Clopin, as a Rom, is a tan-skinned man with shoulder-length black hair, black eyes, a long nose, and a black beard. Clopin has two main outfits in the film. The first is his garish jester-like costume, which includes a fuchsia mask with yellow trimming. The color scheme of this outfit is violet, fuchsia, and yellow. He also has a cowl with gold bells on the ends. On his leggings, one leg is purple, while the other is bright purple with vertical gold stripes. His outfit while in The Court of Miracles is darker in tone, with the cowl being purple and ragged, the mask notably absent, and the leggings solidly purple. There is very little gold trimming. For both outfits, Clopin wears curled-toed shoes, black gloves, an earring on his left ear, and a large-brimmed purple hat, which is slightly torn and has a large yellow feather fixed to the top. Clopin is unusual for a prominent Disney character because of his neutrality toward both good and evil, and his ability to commit benevolent and malevolent acts on a whim. One moment he is performing street theater for children, then he dances throughout town as the Feast of Fools celebration is underway, and the next, he is about to hang the film's heroes. He maintains a rather macabre sense of humor, such as when arranging the hanging of Quasimodo and Phoebus, frequently using head puns and other jokes. He uses puppets and street theater to tell stories, sometimes using one of himself which he will argue within jest, and ultimately always overrules. As the movie's narrator, Clopin has a great deal of knowledge about Quasimodo's past, seemingly more than Quasimodo himself, suggesting that to know the whole story, throughout Paris, he must have plenty of contacts and a well-connected information network across the city. Clopin is also very caring towards his people and loves children, always taking the chance to bring them joy and entertainment. Most fans speculate that he is related to Esmeralda.
