Backstory part 1. Nagato lived with his parents, Fusō and Ise, on the outskirts of Amegakure. When he was very young, Madara Uchiha secretly transplanted his Rinnegan into Nagato without his or his parents' knowledge.[8] Some time later, during the Second Shinobi World War, Nagato and his parents took refuge in their home to escape the fighting happening around them. One day, two Konoha shinobi broke into their home looking for food, and Nagato and his parents attempted to sneak out undetected. When they were discovered, his parents attacked the shinobi so Nagato could escape. The Konoha ninja killed his parents in self-defense and, realizing they were just civilians, attempted to apologize to Nagato. Overcome with grief, Nagato used Madara's Rinnegan for the first time to kill them and avenge his parents. After burying his parents, Nagato, now an orphan, was forced to leave his home and begin wandering in search of food and shelter. Due to the lack of resources due to the ongoing war, no one he met helped him until Konan and Yahiko, orphans like himself, found Nagato, who had collapsed from starvation. They banded together, scavenging for food to survive by any means necessary, and shared dreams of a future where they would be in charge and use their power to end war. Yahiko was particularly passionate about this point, which inspired Nagato to pursue the same goal.[10] To achieve this, the three of them needed to become ninja. With few options to choose from, they approached the legendary Sannin of Konoha and asked to be taught ninjutsu. Orochimaru offered to kill them to end their suffering, but Jiraiya, guilty for his part in the war, offered to teach them to fend for themselves.[11]

Backstory part 2. Jiraiya found them a place to live and taught them how to fish, but he did not teach them ninjutsu. One day, while the orphans were away, they were found and attacked by an Iwa-nin. Fearing for the lives of his friends, Nagato used his Rinnegan to kill the Iwa-nin. When Jiraiya arrived at the scene to help them, he noticed Nagato's eyes for the first time and was reminded of the legends of the Sage of the Six Paths, the original wielder of the Rinnegan. This caused Jiraiya to change his mind and began teaching them ninjutsu.[12] Nagato repented of killing the Iwa-nin, but Jiraiya convinced him that sometimes violence and personal pain were necessary to protect others. Over time, he even shared his belief that Nagato was the reincarnation of the Sage of the Six Paths and that, like the original Sage, Nagato would use her Rinnegan to bring peace to the world. Jiraiya trained the orphans for three years. Thanks to his Rinnegan, Nagato easily mastered everything he was taught.[13] Once they were able to defeat one of his shadow clones in combat, Jiraiya decided that they were ready to strike out on their own and returned to Konoha, confident that they would bring about reforms to the country.[14] The three formed an organization they called Akatsuki, with Yahiko as their leader, and began advocating for an end to the war. Their message proved popular and they garnered a large following;[15] even Jiraiya occasionally heard news of their exploits.[16] During the Third Shinobi World War, they were approached by a disguised Obito Uchiha. Introducing himself as Madara Uchiha, he offered to help them with their training and show Nagato how to unlock the full potential of his Rinnegan. Yahiko refused the offer, suspecting that Tobi only wanted to use them.[

Backstory part 3. Throughout their quest for peace, Akatsuki's ranks grew and became known throughout Amegakure, so much so that Hanzō of Salamander, the village's leader, began to feel that Akatsuki was threatening his rule. He approached Akatsuki, offering to work alongside them to help negotiate with the other warring villages. The next day, at a meeting to finalize the arrangement, Yahiko and Nagato were ambushed by Hanzō and his men, with the support of Danzō Shimura of Konoha. Using Konan as a hostage, Hanzō threatened to kill her unless Nagato killed Yahiko. Unwilling to leave it to Nagato, Yahiko stabbed himself with Nagato's kunai, using his dying breath to express his belief that Nagato would change the world.[18] Enraged by Yahiko's death, Nagato took Konan from Hanzō, though his legs were severely damaged in the process. He then summoned the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and, after linking with it, used it to kill Hanzō's men, though Hanzō himself escaped.[19] Nagato subsequently severed his ties with Amegakure by carving the village's symbol into his forehead protector, no longer wishing to be associated with Hanzō's village.

Backstory part 4. Yahiko's death finally convinced Nagato that his philosophy of achieving peace was foolish; the world would never willingly end the cycle of death and hatred that he had controlled for so long. Only through first-hand experience of war and all the loss and agony it brought could anyone truly desire peace. Intending to personally bring this level of despair to the world, Nagato took the name "Pain". Since the damage he had taken from Hanzō's attack and his connection to the Demonic Statue had left him frail and immobile, Nagato created the Six Paths of Pain from corpses that he controlled remotely. For the Deva Path, he used Yahiko's body, still wanting him to lead the organization in spirit, and for the other five, he used the corpses of various other shinobi who, unbeknownst to him, had met Jiraiya while they were alive. Pain began to lead Akatsuki in a new direction, secretly accepting Obito's previous offer of support. Akatsuki teamed up with S-rank missing-nin and began offering their services as a mercenary group to ninja villages, earning the money they needed to fund their long-term plans.

The seventh ability, called the Outer Path, is said to allow the user to manipulate life and death, granting them the ability to resurrect the dead.[41] The Outer Path also allows the user to transfer their chakra into black receivers,[42] manifest chakra chains to bind tailed beasts,[43] and create the Six Paths of Pain: The Rinnegan grants the user a shared field of vision with their Six Paths of Pain, creatures summoned by the Beast Path, and the King of Hell, each of whom possess copies of the Rinnegan in their own eyes.

The Rinnegan contains unusually powerful chakra and boasts immense powers of vision, such that an unworthy wielder risks "losing themselves" upon implantation. Their full power can only be displayed by their original owner, especially when possessing both eyes, but possessing even one transplanted Rinnegan can still grant overwhelming power.[29] It is able to see chakra and its flow within the body,[36] as well as otherwise invisible barriers,[37] but cannot see through obstacles such as smoke bombs.[38] Possession of the Rinnegan allows one to easily master any jutsu, as well as all five basic nature transformations.[1][39] The Rinnegan is the only dōjutsu capable of fully deciphering the Sage of the Six Paths' Stone Tablet, and the Rinnegan is the only means to break the seal placed on the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and summon it,[46] though it cannot be summoned using a fake reincarnated Rinnegan.

Chibaku Tensei (地爆天星, Chibaku Tensei; Literally meaning: Earth-Heavenly Body Severance) The user creates a black sphere from their hands, which then ascends into the sky. When activated, the sphere becomes a powerful gravity core, pulling all surrounding matter towards itself until it creates a large satellite; the user controls the size of this satellite. Creating the black sphere likely uses a large amount of chakra, as Nagato, when using the technique through the Six Paths of Pain, had to first allow the Deva Path to be close to his location in order to transfer his chakra to it most effectively.

Chibaku Tensei is primarily used to subdue the target, luring it out during the creation of a satellite and burying it under a pile of debris, with a long activation, it will sooner or later begin to distort space, and later draw in all the light around it, which is why it turns into a massive black hole

The Deva Path (天道, Tendō) is a technique that grants the user the ability to manipulate attractive and repulsive forces towards objects or people. These gravity manipulation techniques, however, cannot be performed continuously; the amount of time required to recharge after use varies depending on the scale of the technique used. Five seconds is the basic minimum. The Deva Path also grants other abilities: Chibaku Tensei, which allows the user to create a massive spherical celestial body from all surrounding terrestrial material, which is attracted to the black sphere released by this technique.

The Path of the Human (人間道, Ningendō) is a technique that grants the Rinnegan user the ability to read a target's mind by placing their hand on the target's head or chest and then ripping the soul out of the body. While the technique extracts information, revealing well-guarded secrets, it inevitably kills the victim.

The Asura Path (修羅道, Shuradō) grants the user the ability to modify their body to manifest mechanized armor and various ballistic or mechanical weaponry.[2] In life, Nagato channeled the Asura Path through the body of a ninja puppeteer. Through the Asura Path, the user can form up to four additional arms and two additional faces, as well as a collapsible, jagged, blade-like sash around their waist. The Naraka Path (地獄道, Jigokudō) grants the user two main abilities: interrogation and restoration, using the King of Hell, The Naraka Path's ability is essentially based on the use of the King of Hell. The King of Hell is a large head that sprouts from the ground, surrounded by purple flames. He also possesses the Rinnegan, and is also capable of resurrection

In various conversations throughout the series, he expresses that his actions, while often cruel and destructive, are ultimately intended to create a world where no one will have to endure the suffering he has caused. He believes that through his concept of "Pain", he can force the world to confront and acknowledge its shortcomings, leading to a greater understanding of what it means to live in peace.

Nagato's philosophical musings often reflect a deep sense of tragedy and a desire to protect others from the pain he has known, even if his methods are questionable. He often speaks of the vicious cycle of hatred and how he seeks to break it with his own concept of justice, which he believes is necessary for true peace.

Even as an adult and leader of the Akatsuki, Nagato was still willing to hear Naruto's perspective on rebuilding the Shinobi world. Ne as a cognitive function has a natural tendency of considering other possibilities. He was willing to hear Naruto's perspective on what he was going to do in the future and after Naruto used talk-no-jutsu Nagato was open-minded enough to put his faith into him.
