Joseph, also known as the ex-Count of Desaulniers, came from a wealthy aristocratic family and was born in France along with his twin brother Claude. In his early years, it is believed that his family was forced to leave France and move to England, probably due to the mass emigration to Britain during the French Revolution. Shortly after, his brother died of illness, and the pain of losing his twin and faithful companion led Joseph to immerse himself in art and photography. He hoped to be able to preserve the appearance of the people and objects he photographed, to bring them to life. Despite his arrogance, prejudice and excessive sentimentality, the Count was a wealthy and respected man, his French accent and elegance attracted many people who were willing to become models for his hobby. However, suspicions and rumors about the elderly Joseph began to spread among the servants and workers of the Desaulniers estate, as the population of the village began to decline rapidly. The panic-stricken crowd stormed Joseph's residence, but the old gentleman was nowhere to be seen. However, on the wall of his studio hung all sorts of lifelike portraits of people who seemed to be looking right at them; after all, it seemed that Joseph's camera was taking more than just photographs. He hoped to preserve living images of these people and objects to bring his paintings to life. Joseph became obsessed with parapsychology and hoped to make some interesting modifications to his camera. He began telling his closest friends that he had found a way to capture souls in photographs.
