She is a young woman of average height with a curvy figure and long legs. Her hair is orange and medium-short, falling above her shoulders, and her eyes are black in the manga and dark blue in the anime.

As for her clothing, she is wearing a crimson newsboy cap, accompanied by gold diving goggles; a pale pink collared half-sleeved blouse, which she fastens to her figure like two very thin, dark belts; and cinnamon-colored gloves. She pairs this with a maroon miniskirt with curvy lace at the bottom; high black leggings and brown mid-height boots.

Because of her past, Koala wants to fight against the tyranny and slavery caused by the World Government. She demonstrates her opposition and enmity to it by joining the Revolutionary Army, as well as against other injustices, such as the case of arms trafficking caused in Dressrosa.

In her childhood years ago Aladine, a former Sun Pirate, described to Koala how the lifestyle of a slave was ingrained in her body even after being set free. She was very apologetic and vowed to never cry or stop working. The pirate explained that if a slave cried or stopped working, they would die.

She initially considered the Sun Pirates to be her masters, such as when she asked them if she would be dead if she stopped cleaning. The pirate also said that slaves get scared even when they are alone, and that they cannot trust anyone. Arlong's attitude towards her only seemed to make her distrust them until Fisher Tiger marked her with the Sun Pirates symbol.

By the time they reach her hometown she has really taken a liking to the members of the Sun Pirates, especially forming strong bonds with Hatchan and the Macro Pirates. She went as far as to hold Fisher Tiger's hand, despite him trying to shake it off, showing how much of a fondness she has for him.

After being marked by Fisher Tiger, her fear of them changed, seeing them as her masters, and she became sympathetic to many of its members during her time on the ship, causing them to cry when they said goodbye. Her respect for them is such that she learned fishman karate, being the first known human in the series to practice it. Arlong, along with some of his men, were among the few members of the gang who did not sympathize with her, due to their prejudices against humans, which he carried over to meet and practically enslave Nami as a child.

True to the hopes that Fisher Tiger had for her, after his death she continued to show interest in the fishmen, being taught to fight using fishman karate until she became a master and teaching it to others, apart from the fact that she decided to become an enemy of the World Government by fighting it alongside the revolutionaries.
