Daena, Rhaena and Elaena Targaryen

The most famous of three sisters, Daena was much loved, both for her beauty and courage. Daena was wild almost from birth. A Targaryen to the bone, she was strong, beautiful, and wilful and like the rest of her siblings had Valyrian looks. Her long silver-gold hair was thick and curly, an untamed mane that framed her heart-shaped face and her sparkling purple eyes. To top it off, she had a fearless "I'll dare anything" smile.

Daena was lithe and athletic. She was an expert horsewoman and also a hunter and a fine archer. She was also practiced at riding at rings, though she was never allowed to ride in a tourney, despite her best efforts.

She worshiped her father and idolized her brother Daeron. She used a Dornish short recurved bow brought back by Daeron from his conquest of Dorne.

Daena often dressed dramatically. As a child, she always wore black in emulation of her father. After her brother Baelor failed to consummate their marriage, she changed to all white.

She always wore the golden three-headed dragon pendant she had inherited from her father. At court she wore it on a fine golden chain; when in disguise as a peasant, she hung it on a leather thong and hid it beneath her clothes. Supposedly she even wore it when bathing and when making love.

At fourteen, two years younger than Daena, Rhaena was just as lovely as her sister, but hers was a softer, sweeter, more feminine beauty. Though she was not plump, her body was more rounded than Daena's; her breasts were larger, her lips fuller. Rhaena's hair was more gold than silver, and was always carefully coiffed and combed. She had soft, kind eyes and a shy, sweet smile.

In personality, she differed greatly from her older sister. Where Daena was wilful, wild, and adventurous, Rhaena was dutiful, meek, and passive. She loved to dress in white and gold, and was very fond of lace trim on her sleeves and bodice. She loved to sew and do needlework, and often embroidered religious scenes on her own clothing (such as the Mother's face, and the Maiden with a white hart).

According to semi-canon sources, Elaena was not a great beauty in her youth, unlike like her sisters. At age eleven, she was described as a "skinny little thing", awkward and angular, shy and charming by turns. However, her beauty matured as she grew older, and its was said that she was more beautiful at age seventy than at age seventeen. Her eyes were a soft lilac, her mouth thin-lipped and often angry. Her hair was a platinum white with a bright golden streak down the middle, an unusual color even for the Targaryens. She wore it long, pulled back, and braided, and was always being told it was her crowning beauty. However, she cut off her braid to defy her brother Baelor for imprisoning her in the Maidenvault, and afterwards wore her hair short for years.

As a child, Elaena liked to dress in black, simply because her older sister Daena also dressed in black. In character, she had more than a little of Daena's willfulness, as she would prove when she grew older. Elaena was also shrewd and intelligent, especially with money.

Sisterly Bonds and Rivalries

Daena, known for her beauty and willfulness, often took on a leadership role among her sisters. She was described as strong-willed and adventurous, traits that sometimes led to conflicts with her siblings. Her bold nature made her the most prominent figure among the three, often overshadowing Rhaena and Elaena. Daena’s defiance against their brother Baelor I Targaryen’s strict rules regarding their confinement in the Maidenvault showcased her rebellious spirit. This defiance also created a sense of camaraderie with her sisters as they endured similar fates.

Rhaena, on the other hand, was characterized by her gentler demeanor. She was more passive compared to Daena and often accepted her circumstances without complaint. This contrast in personalities likely created a dynamic where Rhaena looked up to Daena while also feeling overshadowed by her assertiveness. Despite this, Rhaena maintained a close bond with both sisters during their time in confinement.

Elaena, the youngest sister, exhibited traits from both Daena’s willfulness and Rhaena’s gentleness. While she admired Daena’s strength, she also sought to carve out her own identity separate from her sisters. Her decision to cut off her hair as an act of defiance against Baelor illustrates her desire for autonomy. Throughout their imprisonment in the Maidenvault, the sisters relied on each other for support amidst their shared struggles.

Isolated from the outside world and subjected to strict control by Baelor I Targaryen, the three sisters formed a tight-knit unit as they navigated their confinement together. Their collective experience of being imprisoned likely fostered a deep bond among them; however, it also introduced tensions due to differing coping mechanisms. While Daena acted out against their situation, Rhaena remained compliant, which may have caused friction at times.
