Mikey is playful and happy. He is intuitive, able to adopt new skills quickly, determine the problems of others, and sometimes accurately predict situational outcomes.

Mikey is quite creative and is passionate about a variety of different artistic mediums such as illustration, music and cooking. He is in tune with pop culture, as evidenced by some of his word choices and his knowledge of relevant celebrities, such as Rupert Swaggart. However, Mikey has an uneven appreciation for certain retro/old-school icons, as he is disappointed with Hot Soup: The Game's dated graphics ("Hot Soup: The Game").

Mikey is easily scared and often hides in his shell rather than face the threat. This results in others having to carry him to safety themselves. Despite this, Mikey enjoys watching thrillers and horror movies as long as he is a passive viewer while watching Baxter Stockboy's haunted video about the ghost named Gumbus.

While Mikey will lie, he despises him as he becomes increasingly frustrated with Leonardo's lying behavior in "Flushed, but Never Forgotten" and insists that he and his siblings reveal the truth to Splinter. Mikey finds it difficult to deal with the guilt of lying and therefore he does not reliably keep secrets.

Mikey is competitive as seen in "You Got Served" when he is determined to win a one-sided competition against Leo and brags about Leo's previous victory, labeling himself as "today's all-time champion".

Mikey is compassionate and family-oriented, as in "Repairin' the Baron" he helps Baron Draxum recover from using the Kuroi Yōroi without being asked. He prefers to see the good in others, a quality that he can border on naivety, as when he attempts to rationalize Foot Recruit's suspicious attitude toward himself during their first meeting in "Hot Soup: The Game."

when he is eager to complete a mission without the help of his brothers. Mikey's confidence in his ability to be independent is not always shared by the other Mad Dogs due to him being the youngest, much to his frustration.

Mikey is also the one who never gives up and has faith in himself and his brothers. In Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie, Mikey has faith in Leo to break Donnie's pizza box stack record and in himself to create a gateway to rescue Leo after many failed attempts to do so throughout the course of the film.
