Rui has yellow eyes and short, patchy, purple hair with blue streaks. He has a piercing in his right ear.

His outfit for the show consists of a headband, a navy blue shirt, a black vest, and a long pink/purple coat with a neon yellow/green splatter pattern on the shoulders and bottom edge of the coat. He wears white pants with black knee-high boots and short white gloves.

His school attire is the standard Kamiyama High School male uniform with a tie, although his shirt is untucked and he wears a sky blue cardigan over it.

Rui lives by his own rules, which makes people consider him a weirdo. He is a literal genius. However, Rui often feels like an outcast for his inventions and eccentric thinking. In WxS, Rui feels like he can be himself in the group and strives to create better and better inventions.

He likes to make fun of his friends and is always thinking of ideas for shows or inventing things.

Rui was the one who built NeneRobo for Nene.

Rui's favorite food is sweets and his least favorite food is vegetables.

He doesn't like vegetables because of their texture. He also doesn't like fruits with textures similar to vegetables, such as watermelon.

When eating taiyaki, he prefers to split it in half and eat it from the middle first. He does this to allow the bean paste to cool.
