Those who know him personally describe him as a "clean freak", as he wants his surroundings to be spotlessly clean and cannot stand himself or his equipment being dirty. However, if the situation calls for it, he is capable of getting himself dirty; such as saving Eren from the Forest of Giant Trees[2] or holding the bloody hand of a subordinate, whom he comforted during his final moments.[3]

Despite his "flawless" appearance, he has a cold and unapproachable personality. Petra describes him as violent and impenetrable. He is not usually kind when speaking and sometimes makes rude or inappropriate comments. His sense of humor is rather acidic, which can be off-putting and even seem vulgar. He usually says things in a strict and insulting manner, and provokes his opponents by going as far as to belittle them, which more often than not unsettles those around him.[4]

Still, Levi has a softer side, which he rarely shows. One of his most striking characteristics is the great value he places on preserving human life.
