Giyu is a fairly tall young woman, slender yet muscular, with a pale complexion, almost always seen with a stoic expression. She has choppy, jet-black hair of uneven lengths, with a side-swept fringe at jaw level, a low, messy ponytail at the nape of her neck, and a choppy fringe that falls over her eyes. Her eyes are sharp and moderately large, with lapis lazuli irises and navy blue pupils, sometimes with completely opaque and empty irises, just lapis lazuli blue, and are framed by thin eyebrows. Giyu wears a standard Demon Slayer uniform, black in color (dyed charcoal in the anime), consisting of a buttoned jacket with gold buttons, a high collar, and long sleeves, a white belt, and tattsuke hakama pants wrapped in white kyahan. He wears white zōri with dark blue straps and tabi socks underneath, matching the uniform color. Over this, Giyu wears a haori divided in half into two different halves: the right half is crimson, and the left half features a diamond pattern with geometric designs in green, dark green, orange, and yellow. It is later revealed that these haori belonged to his late older sister, Tsutako Tomioka, and his late friend, Sabito.

Giyu is a woman of great composure, therefore, she always wears a calm and stern expression. However, she has a stoic personality and a very strong sense of justice and responsibility. She has no tolerance for those who do not know their own limitations and waste their lives. [9] Despite letting Nezuko Kamado live due to Tanjiro Kamado's persistence, she shows no hesitation in killing other demons and has no respect or pity for them like most Demon Slayers. [10] Even so, Giyu violated the Demon Slayer Corps' code of conduct without hesitation to protect Nezuko during Shinobu's attempt to kill her. This implies that she does not completely despise demons as other Hashira do, and is willing to make an exception for a demon by letting them live if they do not kill and eat humans. This shows that she is more pragmatic and impartial when dealing with demons rather than letting her hatred cloud her judgment.

Giyu shows concern for what others think of her, expressing surprise when Shinobu Kocho claims that others hate her. [11] Aside from that, however, she doesn't seem to mind Shinobu's other teasing, even ignoring it. Despite this, they are actually friends with a fair amount of history together. She is a woman of few words and isn't very good at interacting with others, so she generally keeps her distance. [12] She even goes to great lengths to tell Akaza that she hates talking and wants to keep his name to himself, as she believes names aren't meant to be shared, especially with demons.

Beneath his seemingly indifferent and distant demeanor, Giyu suffers from an inferiority complex that developed after his participation in Final Selection. This self-doubt reached the point where he contemplated abandoning his position as the Water Hashira until Tanjiro helped him realize that he must honor the sacrifice of his loved ones.

Sanemi is a tall, muscular, and somewhat slender woman with long, spiky white hair and large, almond-shaped eyes with purple irises. Her face and body are covered in scars, accumulated over her many years of fighting demons. She cuts her hair sometime between the events of the Hashira meeting and the Mugen Train incident. She is usually seen with a crazed expression on her face.

He wears a standard black Demon Slayer uniform, dyed dark green in the anime, unbuttoned to expose his chest and abs with a long-sleeved white haori over it with the kanji for kill (殺Ya, satsu?) engraved on the back, white buckles around his shins and tabi socks with a pair of white zōri with green straps.

Sanemi is aggressive, hot-tempered, reckless, and stubborn, often impulsive and quick to attack. She is often indifferent to others and can become angry very easily. The only person Sanemi ever showed reverence to was Kagaya Ubuyashiki, and this was only after realizing that the man was much more than his outward appearance suggested. Sanemi has also displayed a hunger for battle, desiring to encounter higher-ranking demons and proclaiming her eagerness to fight the top-ranked one, Kokushibo.

Because of all those he lost to them, Sanemi harbors a deep hatred for demons and is convinced that humans and demons can never coexist. When he makes up his mind about something, he is extremely difficult to dissuade. He didn't believe Tanjiro's insistence that Nezuko Kamado wouldn't eat humans and even went so far as to stab the box with Nezuko inside to prove his own point. [4] After angering her, he cuts off his arm to try to provoke her into attacking him due to the effect of his rare blood. Even after she doesn't, and Kagaya uses this as proof that Nezuko won't attack humans, Sanemi still doesn't truly accept the Kamado siblings.

Ultimately, Tanjiro is right about Sanemi. Despite her mistreatment of her brother, Genya, Sanemi truly loved and cared for him, admitting that she blames herself for not protecting him. She even expresses a desire for Genya to settle down and have a family. After the battle with Upper Rank One, Sanemi not only displays intense anger and a certain emptiness toward Muzan, but also cooperates more with people like Giyu, someone she clearly didn't get along with in the past. Even when Sanemi is knocked out of the fight against Muzan, she displays undeniable courage and determination, just like her comrade Hashira.
