Kenma Kozume (孤爪研磨 Kozume Kenma) is a second-year student at Nekoma High School. He is the setter, "Brain", and "Heart" of the team. As of 2018, he is a university student and appears to have become somewhat wealthy through his varied career as a stock trader, professional gamer, Youtuber, and the CEO of his own company, Bouncing Ball Corp.

Appearance
Kenma is short and thin. He is an excellent setter due to his calm and level-headed personality. He does not have any other distinguishing features other than his golden cat-like eyes and light hair with black roots (sometimes referred to as "Pudding Head"). He dyed his hair when he was younger, stating that he did not want to "stand out". He used to have black hair. He dresses casually and wears the standard black and red uniform of the Nekoma High Volleyball Club. He is usually seen holding a handheld game console or a cell phone.

Kenma has a very calm and laid back personality. He almost never loses his cool, and he generally never gets excited about anything or gets excited about anything (with the exception of Hinata, video games, and Lev, as Kuroo previously pointed out in the Nekoma OVA). Kenma is quite reserved and tries to rarely voice his opinions, as he is afraid of the opinions of others. He also absolutely loves playing his PSP.

He is not particularly social and therefore has difficulty making friends. Kenma rarely shows emotions; sometimes he comes across as a cold person. His manner of speech can be shy and nervous, such as when he first met Hinata. An exception is Tetsurō Kuroo, his childhood friend.

Kenma is shown to care or think about his friends and always notices changes in their behavior. For example, when they were younger, Kuroo lost a volleyball match and was depressed, Kozume noticed this and despite not being into volleyball, asked him if he wanted to train more and improve his technique, to which he responded positively. Another instance is seen later in the manga, when Kenma admits that he tries his best to help his friends win.

Aside from Tetsurou Kuroo, his housemate, Kenma has not made any friends since he was in elementary school. Despite his shy personality, Kenma is quite skilled at volleyball, with his extraordinary sense of the game, technique, and strong analytical abilities compensating for his slight lack of strength, speed, and endurance.

Seemingly somewhat apathetic, Kenma is the type of person who doesn't do anything he doesn't like, and would quit volleyball if it became one. This, he says, would be an aspect of improving his skills (like in video games). But since he has trouble talking about his feelings, his true motivation for continuing to play volleyball is his friends.

After the time skip, Kenma can be described as having a good head on his shoulders. Even as a successful stock trader, professional gamer, YouTuber, and CEO of his own company, he does not spend his money lavishly, except for video games.

Kuroo Tetsurō (黒尾鉄朗, Kuroo Tetsurō) is a third-year student at Nekoma High School. He is the captain of the boys' volleyball club and plays as a middle blocker.

As of 2018, he works for the Japan Sports Promotion Association.

Appearance
Kuroo is tall and athletic. He has amber eyes and a rather cynical look. He is very tall, graceful and flexible, his movements reminiscent of a cat. Tetsuro has black, messy hair, with a fringe on the right side, partially covering his right eye. Because of this, the captain of Nekoma received the nickname "spike head".

Most of his wardrobe consists of dark-colored clothes. His sports uniform consists of a black T-shirt, a scarlet tracksuit with the engraving "Nekoma" and the same color sweatpants and shorts. He is the only one on the team who does not wear knee pads.

During official matches, he wears the red uniform with black trim of the Nekoma High Volleyball Club with the number "1".

Kuroo is calm, confident, and at the same time somewhat sarcastic and scheming, and is considered a "master of provocation", as shown when he intentionally provoked Tsukishima during their expedition to Tokyo. However, he later apologized to Daichi for this.

Kuroo is the leader of the team, and his comrades can always count on him because he is reliable and responsible. In addition, he is quite smart and studies well.

Background
Kuroo grew up next door to Kenma and started going to the same school as him. Kuroo has been playing volleyball since elementary school, and possibly even earlier. He would watch professional volleyball matches and memorize the players' moves, later showing them to Kenma. He convinced Kenma to join their school volleyball club, and they have been playing together ever since.
