Kaigaku is a muscular young man of medium height with short, spiky black hair framing his face in two thick strands, and a pair of dull, cold turquoise eyes framed by thick arched eyebrows. He has an unfriendly face, which always has a semi-permanent grinning expression.

Still being trained by Kuwajima, he is depicted wearing a black kimono with a white collar, loosely worn to expose his chest, and his trademark magatama necklaces around his neck. When he became a Demon Slayer, he wore a standard Corps uniform consisting of a black gakuran-like jacket, a pair of matching black tatsuke-hakama pants belted with a white belt tucked into a white kyakhan wrapped around his ankles, and a pair of tabi and zori socks.

Although outwardly Kaigaku is cocky, arrogant and arrogant, in fact he is cowardly and selfish. Like many orphans who grew up with nothing, he resorted to any immoral or humiliating actions as a means of survival, such as stealing and drinking from a puddle. His heightened sense of self-preservation reaches the point where he sacrifices the lives of Ghem and other children to save his own skin, showing that he will do anything if it means survival. This attitude was also evident during his time as a Demon Slayer; unlike those who join the Corps, Kaigaku never had the desire to kill demons or protect people. However, despite his disinterest in becoming a Demon Slayer for the common good, Kaigaku did show a desire to obtain the status of a swordsman.

In addition, Kaigaku developed a sense of hypocritical self-righteousness. Kaigaku also has a distorted view of "right" and "wrong", believing that those who judge him correctly (i.e., say that he is worthy) are good, and those who judge him incorrectly and rate him poorly are evil.[5] His inflated ego and superiority complex were evident when he could not accept the idea of sharing the position of Thunder Hashira with Zenitsu, and later accused Jigoro of preferring Zenitsu to him. In addition, when Zenitsu points out that Kaigaku could never master the first form, and remarks that he feels sorry for Jigoro for having such pathetic successors, Kaigaku immediately lost his temper and shouted at Zenitsu not to compare them with each other.

Kaigaku seemed to be genuinely happy as a child, living with Ghem and the other orphans, having fun talking and having dinner with them, and smiling when Ghem stroked his head. However, his self-centered nature outweighed his affection for his first found family.

Kaigaku was an orphan and a thief who had to eat scraps and steal to survive. He was one of the orphans that Ghem Himejima took care of at his temple, where he was shown to be cheerful in their company. However, after other children caught him stealing temple money, he was kicked out at night, and he encountered a demon, which he then let into the temple in exchange for saving his life. He did this by extinguishing wisteria incense intended to scare away demons, and ran away when the deed was done.

Kaigaku developed a belief that strength and survival were the only things worthy of respect, and was willing to grovel and beg for his life if it was necessary for survival. Eventually, he was taken in by Jigoro along with Zenitsu, and he learned Thunder Breathing. He was determined to become Jigoro's successor and the new Thunderer Hashira. Jigoro, however, insisted that both he and Zenitsu would succeed him, despite Zenitsu's weakness and timid nature.

Swordmaster: As the one who was originally supposed to inherit the position of Jigoro Hashira Thunder, it is implied that Kaigaku is an extremely skilled swordsman with great mastery of Thunder Breath. His swordsmanship differs from that of most Demon Slayers, as he carries a sword scabbard on his back rather than on either side of his waist. However, his swordsmanship could match Zenitsu's

Thunder Breathing: A style of breathing that Kaigaku learned from former Hashira, Jigoro Kuwajima. It was implied that Kaigaku was quite talented at learning this style of breathing, so much so that Jigoro wanted Zenitsu to imitate him. But despite this, Kaigaku was unable to master the first and most fundamental form of Thunder Breathing, Thunderclap and Flash, despite being able to learn and master all the other 5 techniques of this Style of breathing. However, some Demon Slayers said that due to Kaigaku's inability to master the first form, the other 5 techniques he learned would not make much difference.
