Kokichi Muta (Mechamaru)

Kokichi Muta (与幸吉, Muta Kokichi?) also known as Mechamaru (メカ丸, Meka-maru?)

is one of the characters in the manga series Jujutsu Kaisen. He was a second-year student at Kyoto Metropolitan Magic Technical College.

Since birth, he was subjected to the Heavenly Curse, causing him to lose part of his limbs and obtain a very weak body. To physically attend classes and his missions, he used a puppet known by the alias Ultimate Mechamaru (究 極 メカ丸, (Arutimetto Mekamaru?).

Description: Kokichi was a tall, slender young man. He had long, black hair, which he usually wore in a ponytail. Due to the Heavenly Curse he was subjected to since birth, he was missing his right forearm, completely lost his legs, and had no feeling from the waist down. His skin used to be quite sensitive to light, so he used to have his entire body covered in bandages and was confined to a bathtub.[2]

Using Ultimate Mechamaru, he used to be the size of an average human with a mechanical appearance, with markings on his forehead and two lines surrounding his head, also, his skin tone used to be light[3]; in the anime, his skin tone is depicted as brown and green eyes.

After Mahito used his Free Mutation Technique on him, Kokichi regained his limbs, and his skin's sensitivity to light disappeared, so he no longer possessed any bandages or scars, except for a scar on his left cheek.[4]

Her signature outfit consisted of her own version of the Kyoto Metropolitan Magic Technical College uniform, which consisted of a black jacket with the characteristic buttons of Jujutsu schools, with a white puffed collar, black pants, and black shoes[3]; in the anime, the entire uniform is depicted in navy blue.

Kokichi was an intelligent, determined and methodical person[3][4]. He longed to have a "normal" body and always felt disgusted at the fact that he had been subjected to the Heavenly Curse. He confessed that if he could exchange all his power for a "normal body", he would do so without hesitation[2].

He felt hatred towards Panda because, being a cursed body, he can live a normal life, while he, being a human, was forced to live with suffering and away from others[2].

He always had a wish to be able to physically attend Kyoto Metropolitan Magic Technical College with his friends and live a life as a shaman without needing his puppets to do so.[2][5] He was so determined to achieve this goal that he agreed to collaborate with Suguru Geto and Mahito in order to fulfill his greatest wish.[6] Still, he protected his friends at school until the very end, setting the condition that they would not harm his friends, and planning to kill both of them once they gave him their normal bodies. It is also implied that Kokichi greatly appreciated Kasumi Miwa.[4]

Mechamaru is not just a robot, but a young man named Kokichi Muta who, due to a terminal illness, transferred his consciousness into a mechanical body. His goal was to live a fuller life and help others as a sorcerer.

His past is marked by illness and loneliness, which led him to search for a way to escape his weakened body. The curse offered him a chance, but at a high cost: his original life.

In Jujutsu Kaisen, Mechamaru joins Kyoto Technical College and becomes a valuable ally. Despite his artificial body, he demonstrates great strength and skills as a sorcerer. However, his physical condition limits his time and forces him to face a constant battle against his own mortality.

His relationship with Miwa is one of the highlights of his character. They both support each other and form a deep bond.

Tragedy, unfortunately, strikes Mechamaru in his confrontation with Mahito. Despite his bravery and determination, he is unable to overcome the limitations of his body and succumbs to the curse.

His legacy, however, lives on. Mechamaru became a symbol of hope and perseverance, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of his peers and on the history of Jujutsu Kaisen.

A new body, a new life:

• The Curse as an Escape: Kokichi Muta, the young man who inhabits Mechamaru, accepted the curse as a way to escape his sick and weak body. The transfer of his consciousness into a mechanical body allowed him to experience a life that was previously impossible for him.

• A Sorcerer Despite All: Despite his physical limitations, Mechamaru proved to be a talented and strategic sorcerer. His ability to control his mechanical body and his curse technique made him a formidable opponent.

A special bond:

• Friendship with Miwa: The relationship between Mechamaru and Miwa is one of the most touching aspects of the series. They both understand each other and support each other in difficult times. Miwa becomes a very important figure in Mechamaru's life, providing him with affection and company.

The weight of mortality:

• A constant battle: Despite his mechanical body, Mechamaru is still mortal. His time is limited and he must face the reality that his life could end at any moment. This constant struggle against death gives him an emotional depth that moves readers.

• A Necessary Sacrifice: Mechamaru's decision to face Mahito knowing he could die demonstrates his bravery and his desire to protect his comrades. His sacrifice was not in vain, as it inspired the others to keep fighting.

• A symbol of hope: Mechamaru became a symbol of hope for those facing hardships. His story teaches us that even in the most difficult circumstances, we can find the strength to keep going and achieve our dreams.

Kokichi's level of physical strength is unknown due to the fact that he spent much of his life confined to a bathtub and was subjected to the Heavenly Curse since birth, causing his body to be too weak.[1]

When using his puppets, the power of his puppets would vary depending on the force he applied to them. At the beginning of the story, he used Ultimate Mechamaru[2] which had enough strength and durability to withstand various attacks[3].

Cursed Technique:

Kokichi's cursed technique is known as the Puppet Manipulation Technique (傀儡操術, Kairai Sōjutsu?). An innate technique that allows him to manipulate puppets and thanks to his Heavenly Curse, he can do so from any distance or location. The size and characteristics of the puppets differ greatly, he usually uses small ones to spy and report, to human-sized or giant ones for various destructive attacks. The puppets he usually manipulates are:

• Ultimate Mechamaru: He is the size of an average human with a mechanical appearance, with marks on his forehead and two lines surrounding his head. He is usually dressed in the traditional Kyoto uniform[2]. The techniques he can use on the puppet are:

• Sword Option: This is a command that allows you to transform your puppet's arm. Multiple sharp blades protrude around the entire arm. Long sharp blades extend from the fingernails. This technique is effective when fighting in close-range combat.[3]

• Ultra Spin: Activating Sword Option allows the puppet's wrist to rotate at a rapid speed, resulting in the creation of a drill-like penetrating attack.

• Ultra Shield: Upon activating Sword Option, the puppet changes its commands from sharp blades to several small, pointed spikes protruding from its arms, which serve as a type of shield.[4]

• Boost Activated: This is a command that allows you to activate a pair of thrusters on both elbows of your puppet, allowing you to increase speed and momentum to avoid gravity attacks.[4] It can be used to activate the thrusters on either of Ultimate Mechamaru's arms, or both at the same time.

• Ultra Cannon: Activate a cannon in the palm of your puppet's hands that fires a powerful blast of cursed energy[1].

• Mechamaru Ultimate: Albatross Mode: Allows the puppet's head to move backwards and opens its mouth wide to give rise to the appearance of a cannon. Through the use of other derived techniques, the power of the attack can be increased[1]. The techniques that can be used on the puppet are:

• Ultra Ultimate Cannon: Allows a powerful blast of cursed energy to be released from the puppet's mouth with high destructive power.

• Mechamaru Ultimate: Absolute Mode: It is a giant mechanical puppet, which allows its user to pilot from the cockpit inside his head. This puppet requires years of cursed energy to be able to be used[5]. The techniques that can be used on the puppet are:

• Ultra Cannon: This is a command that allows the puppet to release an immense blast of cursed energy through the palm of his hand with high destructive power. This cannon consumes a year of cursed energy.

• Miracle Cannon: This is a command that allows the puppet to release an immense blast of cursed energy through both hands.[5] It consumes two years of cursed energy.

• Viola Vision: Allows one to create five giant orbs of cursed energy and fire them once they are created. The explosions follow the target and do not stop until they come into contact with something.[6] This attack consumes 5 years of cursed energy.

• Kokichi was also able to make use of the New Style Shadow Technique (シン・陰流, Shin Kageryū?). A cursed technique, although it requires the use of katanas or swords, he also has other derivative techniques capable of being transmitted to others without the need to be part of the Ashiya Clan. Some techniques are known as "techniques of the weak" as they serve as a mode of protection for their user. [7] The techniques that Kokichi can use are:

• Simple Territory: Kokichi places both of his puppet's legs on a fixed point and after concentrating enough cursed energy, a 2.21 meter circle is created around the user from the chosen fixed point. Any cursed technique deployed in this area will be automatically dispelled. He learned how to use it based on pure observation of other users of the technique.

• Shaman Techniques: These are some of the techniques that any Jujutsu Shaman is capable of using:

• Binding Contract: Heavenly Curse: It is a contract created through the use of cursed energy, imposed on him since birth. The heavenly curse caused Kokichi to lose his right arm and both legs, and he also obtained skin that is too sensitive to sunlight. As a reward, he was blessed with great levels of cursed energy and power in his attacks.

He was not trained in the use of cursed tools but is trained in the use of manipulating cursed bodies or puppets. Thanks to his great agility, he shows no difficulty when moving his puppets across the entire battlefield.
