Persona Attributes
personality
Sonic is described as being "like the wind";[18] a laid-back, free-spirited, and adventurous person. He considers freedom to be a part of everything, living his life his way without obeying the standards set before him and enjoys traveling the world the most,[19][20] never thinking twice about what people say or think to him.[18] Hardened with a strong passion for life, he is always seeking new experiences, making his life one of endless adventures. Due to his need to be free, Sonic dislikes being cooped up and unable to move,[18] such as in Sonic Adventure 2 where he could not stay calm while locked in a small prison. Likewise, he tends to be overly restless and hates waiting too long, a detail depicted in his idle animations.
Sonic generally has a calm and relaxed attitude.[18][20] Although he is sometimes impatient and has a short temper.[2][21] Due to his impulsive nature, Sonic hates being bored, and can be reckless and act before thinking, accidentally getting into trouble.[21] Despite this, he is honest and always keeps his promises.[2]
Sonic's personality is a combination of kindness and ferocity.[21] He is extremely benevolent and adamant about freedom,[18][22] but he is never the only one to back down in the face of injustice and oppression. He hates all forms of evil,[23][24] to the point of becoming very angry and will do anything to end it, even if it means sacrificing his own life to do so.[21] However, he usually views his heroics as an opportunity to have fun, making him a "thrill-seeker".[18] In times of crisis, his calm personality often changes to a very aggressive one.
personality
Sonic is very self-confident and possesses a large ego, making him bold, proud, and confident in his abilities. No matter how great the challenge, he always remains calm. [18] He often makes fun of others' ways to lighten their mood, though he does this mostly to mock his opponents. Despite this, he can also be somewhat chivalrous and modest when he wants to. Following his free-spirited nature, Sonic never lets the bad or painful things that have happened to him before affect him or stop him. Instead, he prefers to live in the present and always seek out a new adventure. Sonic is also incredibly strong-willed: no matter the situation, he will never give up before the day is saved.
Sonic is extremely loyal to his friends and will risk his life for them without hesitation.[2][21] Although he does occasionally laugh at them and play pranks on them, Sonic never does so with the intention of hurting them or making them feel bad. Sonic is always willing to help his friends and always shows them that they can trust him.[25]
Regardless of how many opponents he has, Sonic usually admires them for how strong they are and for having a lot of fun with them, such as Dr. Eggman.[26] Similarly, Sonic is noted for having a remarkable ability to forget what others did to him before, such as when he forgot the two times Silver tried to kill him and later began working with him without any hard feelings.
Despite his extreme behavior, he is much more perceptive than he usually is, being able to change the way people he meets are and think, as happened with Elise, Merlina and Blaze. This detail, along with his charismatic personality, make Sonic a person who gets along very well with others, even with his enemies.
Sonic greatly appreciates the beauty of nature and often refers to himself as its protector.
personality
Sonic enjoys music, especially the rock genre.[3] He also enjoys dancing, especially breakdancing. In several victory animations, Sonic performs breakdancing moves. His combat moves in Sonic Battle are based on breakdancing, as mentioned in his attack descriptions.
Sonic tends to get irritated when his enemies often misidentify his species, i.e. calling him a rat, causing him to correct them and declare his actual species to be a hedgehog. This is demonstrated in his encounters with Erazor Djinn, and to a lesser extent with his encounter with Infinite in Mystic Jungle.
appearance
Sonic is a slender, anthropomorphic hedgehog with blue fur covering most of his body and peach skin over his arms, snout, and front torso. He has six long quills on the back of his head, two spines protruding from his back behind his shoulders, and a short tail.
He previously had a round head and an equally round torso in his youth, with black eyes. However, he developed green eyes as he aged. Sonic was also shorter and chubbier.
Beginning with Sonic Adventure in 1998, Sonic was redesigned by Yuji Uekawa as a 15-year-old hedgehog; the character was taller with longer legs and a less spherical body, longer hair, two spikes on his back, and emerald green eyes. Sonic was also purposely made a "bad boy" for Sonic Adventure, so the character was not a typical cuddly mascot (Yuji Naka said that Hello Kitty had already cornered the market on cuteness). [11] Further changes to the character's design were made in later games, in Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), and Sonic Unleashed, adding visible hair, a more realistic design for a human world, and making him slightly slimmer. Spin-offs in other media such as comics and cartoons have featured variations on all of these video game designs, with restrictions set by standard model sheets.
For attire, Sonic wears two lightweight, hyper-friction resistant red sneakers with white cuffs around the ankles, grey soles, and white straps on the uppers, the latter held down by a golden buckle on each foot. He also wears a pair of white gloves with sock-like cuffs on his hands.
skills
Powers and abilities Despite it being unknown if he has received any training, Sonic's years of battles have made him a skilled and powerful fighter. He has defeated giant robots, demons, and gods by himself, faced and bested those with far more combat experience, and even defeated people who are equal in skill. Sonic has also been noted to be constantly getting stronger; during the Time Eater incident, Sonic was able to defeat the Egg Emperor/Perfect Chaos on his own, when previously it required additional power. Sonic even told Infinite when defending against the latter compared to the previous time they fought that he is getting more powerful by the second. It is safe to say that Sonic is far more powerful than he lets on, but his overconfidence and reluctance to go all out usually prevents him from fighting at his full strength. His victories over Emerl at Gizoid's maximum potential and Perfect Chaos in his base form are prime examples of Sonic's true power. Regardless of his blocks, Sonic is among the most powerful characters in the series.
Sonic's greatest strength is his super speed, an innate talent possessed by members of the hedgehog species. Sonic, however, has proven himself in a class of his own with his speed, having been credited as "the fastest living thing" and even "the fastest being in the universe." He has the ability to instantly accelerate to the speed of sound and run at speeds far greater than Mach 1, which is at the blistering speed of approximately 768 mph, and can run backwards just as well as he can forwards. Because of that speed, he can scale vertical surfaces and ceilings, run on water, outrun lasers, and even cause the ground to explode in his wake. Even then, Sonic can take his speed even further. By accelerating in one spot, he can take off at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.
skills
Sonic's speed is a dizzying speed of approximately 768 mph, and he can run backwards just as well as he can forwards. Because of that speed, he can scale vertical surfaces and ceilings, run on water, outrun lasers, and even cause the ground to explode in his wake. Even then, Sonic can take his speed even further. By accelerating in place, he can take off to turbo speeds in an instant. He can also envelop himself in a blue energy field that allows him to accelerate past the sound barrier on the ground and in the air for a short time, allowing him to not only directly pass through enemies and obstacles as a living projectile, but also fly immense distances through the air. Using certain techniques, he can even reach the speed of light momentarily. It is unknown what Sonic's top unaided speed is. In Sonic Battle, it is stated that he can move at multiple times the speed of sound and when facing Ultimate Emerl, he went at least ten rounds with him in under thirty seconds. It has also often been stated that Sonic can move at supersonic speeds (ranging between 915-3,840 mph), and has once been called "the world's fastest hypersonic hedgehog" (ranging between 3,840-7,680 mph). There are also records stating that Sonic can move faster than the speed of light, though its accuracy cannot be guaranteed. However, E-123 Omega himself calculated that Sonic's speed could potentially exceed the speed of light, and Sonic has boasted that the speed of light is "no time at all" to him.
Sonic has shown complete mastery of his speed in any environment and can use it for both high-speed offense and defense. Not only can he run at maximum tilt in straight lines, but also in tight circles and around sharp turns with complete control over his momentum. As for stamina, Sonic is seemingly limitless.
skills
as he never runs out of breath to run. His speed also allows him to perform several impressive feats: he can heal himself by vibrating his body, launch shockwaves by spinning rapidly, jump into the air, launch impressive waves with rapid kicks, increase the strength of his punches by hitting with greater momentum, and create super-speed barriers. He can also spin in circles or rotate his limbs at super-high speed to create winds strong enough to attack or blow away opponents, similar to aerokinesis.
Sonic possesses amazing kinetics, precision, and has a reaction time to match his speed. He has profound acrobatic skills and agility, along with enhanced reflexes that allow him to avoid any incoming obstacles with precise and delicate movements. As seen in his first encounter with Silver, Sonic can even detect attacks beyond his field of vision due to his keen reflexes. When launched into the air, he can also perform various tricks before landing. He also has incredible jumping abilities, capable of leaping up to several hundred meters even with extra weight.
Sonic possesses enhanced strength, though it has been noted that he lacks overall raw power in comparison. He can push and lift things several times larger and heavier than himself, run with extra weight slowing him down, and his attacks can crush metal and rock, and damage enemies countless times their size. However, it is debatable whether the latter's power comes from his speed, strength, or a combination of both. Sonic's strength particularly lies in his legs; with a single kick, he can knock over the Egg Golem, take down multiple Egg Gunners at once, and send Badniks flying. This does not mean that Sonic's arms are strong either; he has enough strength to smash robots with his hands and punch through a crumbling wall.
skills
Sonic has demonstrated extreme resilience to damage several times. He can survive being caught in the crossfire from all angles by Eggman's robots (which only briefly knocked him unconscious), withstand the force of a massive explosion and a Hyper-based black hole unharmed, being hit with swords, and crush several robots with his fist unbothered, and take a merciless hit from the Time Eater. Additionally, Sonic has more than once survived impacts from falls at extreme heights, skirting the edge of space, only to shake himself off upon landing, and has even withstood entering the atmosphere.
Sonic possesses an unbreakable and incorruptible spirit; in situations where most others would give up and where he is severely outnumbered and outgunned, Sonic never loses faith in himself and never gives up. This trait allows him to continue fighting when he is completely exhausted or after taking an abnormal amount of damage. His will even allows him to resist mind-controlling powers, such as the corrupting influence of Dark Gaia and the psychic powers of the Overmind, though he did have some protection in the latter instance. Even when possessed by the Ifrit, Sonic was arguably able to occasionally regain control.
Sonic has also shown the ability to harness chaos energy for his own use; with a Chaos Emerald, Sonic can perform Chaos Powers, such as the well-known Chaos Control, and occasionally gain a power boost as well.
Sonic's primary offensive maneuver is the Spin Attack, a technique in which he curls up into a concussive ball or cutting disc and heads toward his targets. With it, Sonic can crush or burrow through almost any substance with enough speed and strike with enough force to punch through colossal boulders. Highly skilled in its use, Sonic can utilize several variants of the Spin Attack for both ground and aerial maneuvers, including the Spin Dash.
skills
Even without his Spin Attack, Sonic is a skilled hand-to-hand combatant. He primarily relies on his quick footwork as most of his power resides in his legs, although he is known to also use his fists and arms, albeit in a fairly direct manner. His fighting style is primarily derived from breakdancing moves that utilize Sonic's legs to their fullest extent, allowing him fast, wide-range kicks. He is also known to use forward flying kicks, split kicks, and scissor kicks. What Sonic lacks in combat strength, he makes up for in the speed he uses to launch rapid attacks in a short amount of time. Sonic is also shown to excel at fencing. Even as a novice swordsman, Sonic could defeat a dragon and, after receiving formal training, could dominate swordsmen such as the Knights of the Round Table. In addition to using advanced techniques, Sonic can apply his speed to his swordplay to make quick, swift cuts, and turn into a spinning circular saw with his sword, allowing him to slice through enemies. He has also learned the martial art of Linshao Kung Fu from Shuifon, although he has not yet been seen using it. Sonic has proven himself to be a world-class Extreme Gear pilot. He is said to move faster than you can run in an Extreme Gear and can go toe-to-toe with legendary Wind Masters like Jet the Hawk. Sonic apparently has a knack for riding Extreme Gear, quickly grasping the controls on his first try and later developing advanced techniques despite being self-taught. After the second World Grand Prix, Sonic can be considered the best Extreme Gear driver in the world, having beaten Metal Sonic in a race, who at the time was an "unbeatable" driver with the skills of the best Extreme drivers. Gear of the world.
skills
Sonic has an extraordinary ability to operate vehicles. He has excellent skills when it comes to piloting planes like the Tornado, driving and racing at high speeds in cars like the Speed Star, and water surfing in boats like the Wave Cyclone. He is also experienced in a variety of sports such as surfing and surfing (he is skilled enough to avoid rescue) and other recreational activities such as grinding. Sonic also appears to be an excellent gunner, able to use the weaponry aboard the Tornado and Tornado-1 with immense precision. It appears that Sonic can control the strength and durability of his otherwise soft spikes at will. While in ball form, they appear to be extremely hard like saw blades; As demonstrated during the Neo Metal Sonic incident, his spikes (and body) are tough enough to pass through battleships without even moving at the speed of sound. Additionally, Sonic's quills can detect nearby dangers, which they warn him about by creating a tingling sensation. Sonic has also demonstrated the ability to transfer his speed through various parts of his body, allowing him to immediately start from stationary positions and even channel it into objects to speed up his movements and have them pass through solid objects like he does while running. It can also create an effect reminiscent of a time interruption, although it is unknown what it derives from.
weaknesses
Known for not being the strongest swimmer,[28] Sonic is unable to swim properly and sinks like a stone in water. This may be due to aquaphobia (Sonic thinks that if he falls into water, he will be trapped with no one to pull him out,[29]) though he does not display this fear very often. In some situations, he can circumvent his weakness for water by running or sliding along the surface, jumping out of the water with successive leaps, and surviving long periods of time underwater with Air Bubbles.
It has been stated that if Sonic does not sleep for eight hours a night, it will ruin his running form.[30] Additionally, he has trouble keeping his balance when he stops suddenly while running at high speeds.
Due to Sonic's giant inner ego, he often jokes and toys with his enemies. This often causes him to underestimate his opponents and let his guard down, as seen during his encounter with Infinite in Mystic Jungle during the war to reclaim the planet and when he was trapped by Eggman aboard the Chaos Energy Cannon at the beginning of the Dark Gaia Incident. Also, his impulsiveness and recklessness can often cause trouble, such as during the Hexagon Incident, where he disposed of Eggman's Cacophonous Conch, which Eggman used to keep the Deadly Six at bay, before heeding Tails' warnings about the conch.
relationships/interactions with others (eggman)
Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik is Sonic's arch-nemesis and eternal enemy, whom he has known longer than anyone else. Along with Tails, Eggman is one of the figures who has often shaped Sonic's fate.[31] Due to Sonic's hatred of anything unfair, he has a great mutual hatred for the doctor and his evil plans to take over the world and has spent years rescuing victims of Eggman's scheming schemes.[32] Whenever Eggman hatches a plan to take over the world, Sonic always shows up and foils him. Because they always fight each other to win, Eggman has become a long-time rival of Sonic's as well as an enemy.[33] Also, whenever Sonic's anger explodes over injustice, it always makes Eggman the recipient of this aggression.[34]
Despite his dislike for Eggman, Sonic has never truly taken his adversary into account and does not consider him to be his enemy in the true sense of the word. [35] Whenever dealing with Eggman, Sonic remains fully confident that he can spoil his plans and never takes them seriously. In fact, Sonic finds entertainment in spoiling Eggman's plans, seeing it as a way to make his life an adventure, and is so used to defeating him that he considers it a daily job.
relationships/interactions with others (eggman)
Typically, Sonic is rather outspoken or outspoken towards Eggman, almost always taking the opportunity to mock him with jokes and sarcasm. Sometimes, Sonic even finds Eggman more annoying than threatening: when he discovered that Eggman was behind the Time Eater in Sonic Generations, Sonic was simply shocked and shrugged it off. However, he remains vigilant about Eggman and his actions, such as when he just refused to believe that Eggman had turned over a new leaf in Sonic Colors. However, in instances where Sonic deems Eggman to be a legitimate threat, he takes the doctor very seriously and lashes out at him in a vicious rage.
When presented with more dire threats that endanger both themselves and their targets, Sonic is willing to put aside his differences with Eggman and join forces with him to stop them. However, even in such cases, Sonic remains reluctant about it, feeling that partnering with Eggman is like the end of the world and a dirty business, and in some cases will suspect the doctor of having an ulterior motive (which is often proven to be true). Due to Dr. Eggman's complicated tendency to instantly switch between morals, it is difficult for Sonic to figure this out.
While Sonic is known to make fun of Dr. Eggman by using his alias instead of his real name[37] (which was possibly given to him by Sonic), he actually uses this name affectionately instead of trying to mock him.
relationships/interactions with others (tails)
Tails is Sonic's best friend, as well as being one of his first companions. Sonic considers Tails to be his "adopted" younger brother,[39] and is aware of how much Tails looks up to him. Aside from Eggman, Tails is one of the figures in Sonic's life who has often shaped his destiny.[31] The two first met in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Sonic first met Tails on West Side Island, when he decided to explore the place. During one of the hedgehog's tours, Tails saw him and witnessed his great speed as he ran. The young fox was impressed by this and began to follow him. Sonic then noticed that Tails was following him, but let him follow him as he was impressed that the young fox could keep up with him. After a while, Sonic began to lose interest in his follower. This, however, would change when Dr. Robotnik began attacking his island. Sonic would soon begin to chase Robotnik in order to stop him, but was unable to stop Tails from following him throughout the journey. [40] Throughout the course of their adventure, Tails proved to be a good assistant to Sonic, such as repairing his plane the Tornado. Thus, Sonic would come to have a great respect for Tails and the two would begin their friendship. At the end of their adventure, when Tails saves Sonic from falling from the Death Egg, Sonic built a great bond of friendship with the young fox and thus the two became good friends. Eventually, Sonic took Tails under his wing as his adventure partner and took it upon himself to train him. Over time, the fox would become his protégé. [41] Furthermore, Sonic would stop bullies from making fun of Tails for his twin tails, which only enhanced Tails' admiration for him.
relationships/interactions with others (tails)
Tails took Sonic's "death" in Sonic Adventure 2 very hard after seeing the capsule Eggman imprisoned Sonic in explode, and took his anger out on Eggman by fighting and defeating him. When Sonic was reunited with Tails, he was very relieved and happy to see that Sonic was still alive. After this adventure, Sonic and Tails are always there to help each other. Their friendship grew and strengthened until they became almost like brothers. Tails often invents gadgets for Sonic such as the three Extreme Gears he made for him. In Sonic Advance 3, they are known as the "Unbreakable Bond" when they team up. In Sonic Rivals 2, it is revealed that Sonic trains Tails to learn how to run faster and to learn how to fight in his free time. Wherever Sonic goes, he always asks Tails if he wants to tag along and Tails is always ready to help. However, he also views Tails as a trustworthy companion and treats him as his equal partner on his adventures. [43] The fact that Tails can also move at great speeds by spinning his twin tails and can fly in the air has helped Sonic many times when he has found himself in trouble. [43] Additionally, Tails' skills as a mechanic, as well as his intellectual prowess, have helped Sonic many times on his adventures. [43] As such, Sonic places an immense amount of trust in Tails, who broadens Sonic's range of activities and sometimes lights the way forward for him. [43] Whenever on an adventure, Sonic always asks Tails to tag along and will accept his help at a moment's notice. That being said, however, Sonic's impatience and recklessness will sometimes cause him to ignore Tails when he gives advice or information, often when it would be most useful, though he is big enough to admit when he should have listened to him.
relationships/interactions with others (tails)
Sonic cares a lot about Tails' well-being. He will not hesitate to threaten those who put him in danger and will always make their safety his top priority, regardless of the matters at hand, such as when he sent Tails away against his will when the Nega-Wisp Armor attacked them. In the opening cutscene of Sonic Riders, Tails is injured by Storm during a race causing him to be left behind. Sonic was about to win the race but upon seeing what happened to Tails, he turned back to find out if his best friend was okay. Tails was very persistent in making Sonic's Extreme Gear the best in the world because Wave made fun of Sonic's Blue Star. At Wave's behavior, Sonic was angry and exasperatedly defended him. When Tails has questions, Sonic is always there to give him moral support. Throughout their adventures, the two have proven to be a perfect team that can handle almost anything; They both provide strengths to each other's weaknesses (Sonic wields muscle while Tails wields intelligence) and neither of them would get far without the other's help. Tails, in particular, proved to be Sonic's most trusted ally, always providing him with invaluable help, knowledge, and machines. In turn, Sonic is impressed with Tails' work and considers his technical skills to be incomparable, although this faith causes him to leave all the technical work to him.
relationships/interactions with others (tails)
Sonic generally has absolute faith in Tails' abilities, though that faith has been known to waver depending on the circumstances. When Sonic planned to have Dr. Eggman do the technical work to save the world from the Deadly Six's abuse of the Extractor, his own frustrations at having caused the mess they were in caused him to doubt Tails' abilities. This would strain their friendship over time. However, in the end, Sonic apologized for doubting Tails, mending their brotherly bond.
Perhaps the greatest strength of Sonic and Tails' friendship is the close bond their hearts share. Whenever the two are together, they both feel like they can overcome any struggle they may be facing. Furthermore, without even having to say anything to each other, they know within themselves what they need to do to be a good partner for the other. As such, it can be speculated that there is something that surpasses even trust between the two.
relationships/interactions with others (amy)
Amy Rose is one of Sonic's oldest and most loyal friends, and his self-proclaimed girlfriend. Sonic first met Amy when he had to rescue her from Metal Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog CD. Amy fell in love with Sonic at first sight and began chasing him wherever he went.[44]
Sonic is often a bit nervous and uncomfortable with Amy's affection for him, which is why he always runs away and hides from her. Despite that, if Amy is in danger, Sonic will always be there to help her, showing that Amy is very important to him. Sonic's constant running away to avoid Amy's love has become a running gag since Amy's first debut. Sonic is also afraid of her when she gets angry, and sometimes runs away scared when she pulls out her Piko Piko Hammer. Still, it has been stated that in his heart he doesn't dislike her as much as he seems and even in the video games he is considered her main love interest, although he probably isn't in love with her.
relationships/interactions with others (amy)
In Sonic Adventure 2, when Sonic was locked up in Prison Island, Amy came to his rescue, so Sonic asks her what she's doing there, to which she jokingly replies that she came to his rescue, and that she would get him out if he married her, then the hedgehog says that he won't fall for that again. Sometimes her presence makes him uncomfortable, because he has a hard time understanding her, like in Sonic Adventure where Amy wanted to go with him to Twinkle Park. Due to how embarrassing it is, he says to himself, "I give up, she's so weird..." or "What a annoying girl...".
In Sonic Unleashed, Amy finds Sonic in his Werehog form, but doesn't recognize him and runs off to look for him, to which Sonic reacts by raising his arm in front of him, implying that he didn't want her to leave. This is a topic of discussion for many fans, as some believe that Sonic doesn't like Amy's presence, or dislikes her. However, this scene shows that it's the opposite, that Sonic really enjoys her company, and apparently doesn't always want her to leave his side. Chip then accidentally hurts Sonic's feelings when he reminds him that people can't recognize him because of his new, scary look. Sonic then walks away depressed while Chip tries to cheer him up again. After rescuing her from a group of creatures sent by Dark Gaia, he runs away from her. Amy takes one look at him and is then shocked to think that the creature was Sonic. When Amy asks Sonic if he wants to come with her after saving the world, the player can choose whether Sonic accepts or not.
relationships/interactions with others (amy)
Sonic appears to have some sort of affection for Amy. Despite her running away and constant rejections of affection towards Amy, he very much shows her that he cares for her, appreciates her love, and considers her a trustworthy friend in his own way. [47][44] In Sonic Unleashed, Sonic was surprised that Amy did not recognize him as the Werehog, and when he later saved her from some of Dark Gaia's minions, he initially chose to run away likely because he was ashamed of his Werehog form. Fortunately, upon learning that Sonic was inside the monster form, she told him that he was still the Sonic she loved. [48] Also, in Sonic Lost World, Sonic was dejected when he thought that Amy and the others had died because of the Extractor.
When Amy shows maturity, Sonic's friendship with Amy becomes much more positive. An example of this is shown right before and during the Dodon Pa Grand Prix, where Amy rarely tends to go overboard in seeking his affection, which in turn makes Sonic more comfortable being around her, such as when she invited him to a picnic, and he agreed.
Overall, Sonic cares for Amy as a good friend and a worthy companion to rely on, and appreciates her efforts to help him when she's not flirting with him. Their relationship has been described as "subtle in nature." However, in reality, Amy's self-paced temper and the messy reaction that comes from Sonic in these situations is, more or less, a stable and carefree exchange between the two. Although it may also be due to Amy's spirit, during the adventures and competitions they've been through, a certain bond of trust has grown between Sonic and Amy. In fact, due to the long relationship they've had, they began to have a deeper understanding of each other.
relationships/interactions with others (amy)
Also, when Amy is in trouble, Sonic will always be there to help her if needed, although he tends to overlook her when she gets caught in the middle of his confrontations with the villains.
relationships/interactions with others (Knuckles)
Another of Sonic's best friends and rivals is Knuckles the Echidna. From Knuckles' first appearance until then, there have been recurring and endless battles between Sonic and Knuckles. The relationship between them is a complicated one, which is why they have even been labeled as "best frenemies".[49] Due to their differences and morals, the two are constantly at odds, which is why they are always coming to blows. Strangely, they always end up tied or something appears to interrupt their battle. This happens often in video games. With Sonic's super speed parallel to Knuckles' super strength, their fights are very even.
When Sonic first met Knuckles, the two had a shocking and terrifying encounter,[50] with Knuckles attempting to stop Sonic from stopping the Death Egg from being re-released after being tricked by Dr. Robotnik. As such, they began as adversaries. However, when the echidna discovered that Robotnik had tricked him, the two joined forces to stop Robotnik and his robots from stealing the Master Emerald, and parted on good terms.
relationships/interactions with others (Knuckles
Due to his lack of social skills in the past, Knuckles would tend to fall for Dr. Eggman's tricks quite often, which, in turn, would be the cause of most of his clashes with Sonic, though as time has passed, the echidna has generally become more aware of Eggman's plans and has stopped believing his claims about Sonic. Whenever Sonic finds out that Eggman has tricked Knuckles, he tends to berate him by calling him "Knuckle-head", which Knuckles does not take too well to, though they always make peace with each other at the end of the day.
Despite their differences, after having several adventures together since they first met, Sonic and Knuckles' relationship has improved, and they have always been quick to help each other out when in a pinch. [50] The two are connected by a hot-blooded friendship,[52] and while they may trade jokes and complain about each other, they are in perfect harmony when it comes time to take action. [50] Small details aside, they both know what is truly important. In fact, when it all comes down to it, Knuckles can be considered Sonic's best friend alongside Tails. It can even be argued that the two are just as close to each other as Sonic and Tails, as the nature of their rivalry/friendship allows them to have a relationship that does not require any restrictions. [50] Also, according to Tails, Sonic and Knuckles are "fun" when they are together.
While Sonic does not dwell on Knuckles' shortcomings, the two deeply acknowledge each other.[52] Nonetheless, Sonic is still somewhat reluctant to admit when Knuckles is right and he is wrong. While Knuckles sometimes refutes his help and claims that he could do better, Sonic simply accepts it and is simply glad to help him. They are also good and loyal teammates. In addition to Knuckles being a vital part of Sonic's team, the two have been called "Fighting Buddies" during the G-merl incident.
relationships/interactions with others (Shadow)
Regardless of their disagreements, they are willing to put aside their differences for the greater good, and together they make an unbeatable team. Overall, there is always extreme tension between Sonic and Shadow, but they have matured over time, with Shadow having more faith in Sonic's capabilities, and Sonic becoming more tolerant of Shadow's violent tendencies.
If there's one thing that can be said about Sonic and Shadow, it's that they're rare people in the sense that they can get up close and personal. Due to Sonic and Shadow's high performance in terms of their physical abilities and their thoughts, there aren't many who can keep up with them. Furthermore, there are even fewer who, despite their rejection, are able to persist, have an opinion, meddle, or stand in the way of both of them and try to stop them like the two of them can. In fact, Sonic is perhaps the only person who can get that close to Shadow and say something that touches his heart (though often it doesn't). In a sense, Sonic's kind of presence is problematic for Shadow, but it's also one of the most important. Regardless of how much of an impact they have on each other, the two share the philosophy of following their hearts' desires, which causes them to clash with each other, cross paths, and sometimes split into friends and enemies.[53]
relationships/interactions with others (shadow)
Shadow the Hedgehog is Sonic's arch-rival. The two look very identical (to the point that many other characters even confused them for one another in Sonic Adventure 2), and share most of the same abilities as Sonic, including Chaos Control. The two first met as enemies, and Sonic held a grudge against Shadow for getting him into trouble with GUN, but put aside their differences to team up and save the world from Gerald Robotnik's doomsday plans. Since then, they have been both adversaries and deadly comrades.
The only similarity that Sonic and Shadow share is their silhouette, as their personalities and tendencies are completely different. [53] In fact, Shadow is one of Sonic's most formidable opponents in every way, [53] and the antithesis of everything Sonic stands for. [54] Sonic is kind, generous, and always looking for adventure and fun, while Shadow is cold, dark, and is known to be one of the most violent characters in the series. Sonic has some limits to fulfill his goal, but Shadow will go to great lengths to fulfill it, having no remorse for it which puts him many times against Sonic. [53] Despite this, Sonic never wants to take Shadow's life and does not consider him an enemy in the true sense of the word. Another strong contrast between them is that Sonic freely lives as he wants without thinking about the pain of the past, while Shadow has let himself be haunted by his own painful experiences. [53] However, Sonic doesn't care about their conflicting worldviews and always sees their conflicting differences as all the more reason to fight each other.
Since their first meeting, they have been fighting, arguing about their differences, and even trying to kill each other. When they first met, Sonic accused Shadow of copying him, while Shadow thought that Sonic was the one copying him. Shadow has those same feelings again.
The Deadly Six are some of the worst enemies Sonic has ever faced. Unlike his past enemies whom he has never seen as real enemies, the Deadly Six are the only ones Sonic has shown true contempt for.
Sonic first met the Deadly Six when they were under Eggman's control, where he treated them with confident derision like any enemy. However, when Sonic recklessly disposed of the Cacophonous Shell used to control the Deadly Six, they rebelled and planned to destroy the world, making Sonic responsible for the subsequent danger to the planet. As such, Sonic set out to stop them more seriously. He soon became extremely hostile towards them when they captured Tails, an act that caused Sonic to lose his cool for once. While trying to save Tails, Sonic threatened the Deadly Six with aggression and spite, which only escalated when Zavok provoked him with his plans to roboticize Tails and seemingly kill his friends. By the time of their final showdown, Sonic had completely had enough of them and aggressively threatened them when he thought they had turned Tails into a robot. In the end, however, Sonic defeated the Deadly Six and got Tails back, redeeming himself and proving himself to be the hero that he is.
When he meets Zavok again (or rather, his replica) aboard the Death Egg, his demeanor towards him was more relaxed, as demonstrated by Sonic engaging in his usual confident mockery towards Zavok both before and immediately after the fight.

Silver the Hedgehog is a good friend and friendly rival of Sonic's. They originally met during the Solaris Incident, where Silver started out as a lethal enemy to Sonic, as Silver believed (at the time) that killing Sonic would prevent the event that would devastate the world and the future. However, even with Silver seeking his death, Sonic was much more forgiving towards Silver, a prime example of this being Sonic checking on Silver to see if he was okay after beating him in their first fight. However, letting his guard down around Silver would result in Sonic putting his life at risk. Still, Sonic didn't seem to hold a grudge against Silver for his attempts to end his life; after Silver showed up to help Sonic save Elise from Dr. Eggman and explained that "circumstances have changed", Sonic quickly teamed up with Silver with a smile on his lips and proceeded to work together with him. Towards the end, Sonic would also impress Silver with his faith in him and willingness to help save his future as well. At that time, Sonic appreciated Silver for everything he had done for him. However, due to a time paradox achieved by Sonic and Elise, Sonic and Silver's first meeting was erased from history, causing them to forget their friendship.

Sonic and Silver eventually met again during the Onyx Island Incident. In this encounter, Sonic was annoyed by Silver's impatient and aggressive attitude, but nonetheless gladly welcomed the challenge he gave him when they raced to reach Dr. Eggman Nega first. He would occasionally even tease Silver for clues he had missed. However, in the end, the two put aside their differences and worked together to stop Eggman Nega's master plan. When they later met again during the Ifrit Incident, Sonic had become more tolerant of Silver's attitude, as evidenced by how Sonic casually greeted Silver despite the latter's impatience, while retaining his competitiveness towards Silver. However, when not competing with each other, Sonic and Silver are much more relaxed with each other; when they first met during the Wisp Incident, Sonic and Silver were able to maintain a friendly and positive conversation, and Silver was even willing to offer Sonic his help with the current crisis.
silver
Nowadays, Sonic and Silver are very friendly with each other. Sonic in particular has earned Silver's respect and unwavering support to rely on; during Sonic's final showdown with the Time Eater, Silver came to cheer Sonic on in taking down said monster. Regardless, they still maintain a friendly rivalry; during the Time Eater incident in particular, whenever Sonic challenged him to a fight, Silver noted that their showdown was going to be a fun activity.
As for what kind of person Silver is to Sonic, there is no doubt that Sonic values Silver's character due to his abilities and positive mental attitude. To put it another way, it could be said that Silver is a reliable person who has something that Sonic does not. This "something" is Silver's tendency to deal with things head on due to the strength of his feelings and the way he generally takes responsibility upon himself, unlike Sonic who is always calm, collected, and free to act as he pleases. However, Sonic does recognize the appeal of the qualities that Silver has as they are an aspect of his purity and endearing virtues. Furthermore, while they have not had many adventures where the two spend much time together, when they do team up, they are good friends who can make up for each other's shortcomings.
curiosities
Sonic first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), but before that, he made a cameo as a keychain hanging from a car's rearview mirror in Sega's Rad Mobile video game. This was five months before the release of the first game in the franchise, however this is contradicted because in the Tokyo Toy Show demo for the first game a message is read upon completing the act saying: デビューが近づいています (Debut approaching) meaning that he first appeared in the first game of his franchise. There is a genome called Sonic hedgehog. Commonly, some of Sonic's enemies often mistake him for a rat. This is because in Japanese "Hedgehog" is "Harinezumi", while "rat" is "Nezumi". Although Sonic's iconic dance style is breakdancing, in commercials for the classic video games he was seen dancing shuffle with a tecktonic mix. According to Yuji Naka, Sonic will probably never get married, as he can't imagine Sonic in a marriage with children. In 1993, Sonic was the first video game character to appear in the
