The Iterators were created after the Void Fluid revolution, which allowed the Ancients to build the massive superstructures with ease. The Iterators would bring food, water, power, and other necessities to the cities in their canisters. After the last of the Ancients left, the Iterators began working on two different problems: one assigned to them by their creators, and the other that the Iterators pointed out.

The first issue is the "Big Problem" - the issue of helping "lower beings" such as Lizards or Slugcats ascend. This is clearly difficult, as they seem entirely driven by instinct and almost devoid of intellect. Furthermore, the Iterators have no reliable way of communicating with them except with the limited symbol- and image-producing capabilities of the Overseers. Sadly, relative focus on this issue was almost entirely abandoned once the second issue came into play.

The second problem is whether iterators managed to ascend. Although at first it was considered completely impossible, iterators began to speculate and meet with each other about how such a feat could be achieved. Interest peaked when Sliver of Straw posted a "Triple Affirmative": affirmative that a solution had been found, affirmative that the solution was portable, and affirmative that a technical implementation was possible and generally applicable.
