Maya Ibuki

First Lieutenant Maya Ibuki is a technician for the NERV organization working under the supervision of Ritsuko Akagi. Her main role during the fights with the Angels is to constantly monitor the pilots' synchronization and send emergency commands to them as ordered by Misato Katsuragi or Commander Gendo Ikari.

Maya is a sensitive, optimistic, and cheerful young girl. Her sensitive nature is evident by her tendency to hide her eyes or vomit during the Evangelion Units' more violent battles. When JSSDF soldiers storm the GeoFront in The End of Evangelion, she refuses to shoot them, saying that she does not have the courage to kill another human being.

Maya has been shown to be very loyal and trusting in nature. She is amazed by the technological advancements that modern society has achieved. At the time of Second Impact, Maya was a young child, and likely lived through the global chaos in which civilization painfully rebuilt itself, with a society struggling to feed its population. It is possible that Maya idealizes science and technology, as it is what ultimately saved the world from collapse.

She believes in the technological utopia that Tokyo-3 represents, enthusiastically commenting that "it's a city made for everyone, in an age where science is unrivaled", though Aoba rejects her beliefs. Notably, she admires Gendo Ikari and Kozo Fuyutsuki for their "coolness" during a power outage in episode 11, not realizing that Ikari had his feet submerged in a bucket of water.
