Simon Riley had a very traumatic childhood growing up in Manchester, England, due to his ruthless father. Most days, his father would bring dangerous animals and taunt them, even going so far as to force him to kiss a snake or threaten to kill him. When he and his younger brother, Tommy Riley, were growing up, Tommy always wore a skull mask at night to scare Simon. Simon's father sometimes took him to Bone Lickers concerts. Simon used to be an apprentice butcher in a grocery store growing up. After the September 11 attacks, he joined the army. He was an experienced soldier who made it into the Special Air Service.

Simon returned home one day in January 2003 to find his family in a difficult situation. His mother was constantly being cheated on, and his brother was addicted to drugs. He chose not to return to his life in the military until he had sorted his life out. In March 2004, Riley beat his father for abusing him and his mother and kicked him out.
