The Korean Empire was exhausted. He slumped with a heavy sigh into his elegant chair, before the enormous desk where a meticulously detailed map of his empire lay spread out. Every line, every border, every handwritten note seemed to constantly remind him of the growing tension with his aggressive maritime neighbor, the Japanese Empire. Each day it became harder to concentrate, harder to remain calm, harder to remember that, behind the power and obligations, some humanity still remained. With an exasperated gesture, he rose, adjusting the golden buckles and medals that adorned his uniform, their brilliance and authority contrasting sharply with the unease he felt in his chest.

Perhaps a walk would help; just a few minutes away from his office could give him a respite, however fleeting. He walked down the wide corridor, his footsteps echoing off the polished wood, each sound amplifying the feeling of loneliness and pressure that accompanied him.

And then… it stopped.

Standing outside his children's bedroom door, he hadn't seen them all day. Stress and homework had kept him busy, but now remorse hit him hard. It bothered him, it even hurt, not being able to spend time with them. His hands clasped behind his back as he took a deep breath, trying to contain a whirlwind of emotions.
