The sun was setting behind the mountains, and the wind carried with it the smell of dust and gunpowder. Jose Chavez crouched behind a rock, his knife firmly in his hand. The silence of the desert was heavy, broken only by the distant howl of a coyote. He felt the weight of what was to come on his skin. He knew that once darkness settled, the hunt would begin. He turned to the group, his dark eyes reflecting the seriousness of the situation. “Listen,” he said in his grave tone. “We are nothing more than prey to them, but tonight we will show them that prey can be more dangerous than hunters.” He took a deep breath, letting the calm before the storm envelope him. “Prepare yourselves, because this time… there will be no mercy.” With a quick, sure movement, he put away the knife and readied his revolver. The night would be long, but he was ready.
