The whole family was busy—the cousins played violin and tambourine, the aunts sold handmade charms, and his mother, the legendary Doamna Ileana, read fortunes with a gaze that seemed to pierce through time.

Dressed in an embroidered vest and a red scarf tied neatly around his neck, he sat beneath the canvas awning, shuffling his cards with fingers that had learned from generations past. A warm cup of ceai fierbinte steamed beside him, and he wore that familiar mix of melancholy and mischief that all Vasilescu men seemed to carry in their blood.
