Sinji, Asuka, Rei and Misato

Shinji has medium-length, straight brown hair and blue-gray eyes. Shinji is also very thin and his shirt is often tucked in, showing that he is a fairly neat person. When spending time at NERV or in the city, he wears his uniform, which consists of a white dress shirt, a blue t-shirt, dark pants, and white sneakers, though when in his apartment, he often wears something more casual. Shinji's plug suit has a very light blue torso, complemented by dark blue parts with black accents.

Shinji initially displays a passive and laid-back personality, inheriting these traits from his quiet life with his sensei. When told to pilot Unit-01, he denies it, not wanting to do so. Although Shinji denies it, he craves praise, and eventually begins piloting Unit-01 to earn his father's approval and love. He also constantly tells himself, "I mustn't run away!",[3] further demonstrating his need to move forward and let go of the past.

Shinji displays a strong fear of emotional pain and being hated or left behind, likely due to feeling abandoned in his youth and subsequently blaming himself for not being good enough to make his father stay by his side. Overall, Shinji is shown to be introverted and disconnected from physical reality due to having little to no meaningful contact with others. He is quite uncomfortable at social gatherings and often has trouble controlling his emotions around other people due to his difficulty letting go of his past. He is driven to extremes, giving up many lives (even his own) to save one person.

Due to Shinji's intense nostalgia and unstable emotional state, he prefers to isolate himself from the world, as evidenced by the headphones he wears quite often, connected to an SDAT music player.[4] Despite all this, Shinji is also aware of his own mistakes, has a detailed memory of the past, and is generally outwardly gentle. He is the only one who tries to find a reason to fight the Angels, and sometimes his justification for running away from piloting is to avoid hurting others.

Asuka has long, bright orange hair and dark blue eyes. Asuka's hair is worn down, with the sides tied into twin ponytails with a red interface headset. She wears her school uniform as her most iconic outfit, which consists of a navy blue pleated jumpsuit over a white button-down blouse with short puffy sleeves, a red bow attached to the collar, white knee-high socks with red stripes, and black Mary Jane shoes. She wears a red watch on her wrist. She also wears outfits such as a pale yellow dress with a lavender necklace and red Mary Jane shoes.

Her tracksuit is red in color, styled with fashionable layers and accents with the 02 symbol printed on the tracksuit.

Asuka has a very proud personality, especially when it comes to her piloting, and is perceived by others as being proud and strong, with a very high opinion of both her appearance (especially her newly "busty" body) and her skill as an Eva pilot. She is stubborn and has a hard time expressing her true feelings to others. She does not like being looked down upon or told what to do, as she wants to be looked at as an adult. She is aggressive and can be very self-assured. However, this personality is a front that protects a very vulnerable and insecure girl, a side the viewer sees in her dreams or thoughts. She is often cruel and intrudes on other people's space, especially Shinji's. She also has a strong need to be self-sufficient, and has a very hard time dealing with her self-image of failure when she really needs help;

Rei is a teenage girl with a slender build and pale skin. She has short light blue hair with a middle part and red eyes. At the beginning of the series, she wore bandages such as one on her arm and one over her eye. She wears the same school uniform, but instead of it, she wears white loafers and black knee socks.

At the beginning of the series, Rei is socially withdrawn, appears emotionless, and rarely interacts with anyone except Gendo, to whom she initially shows loyalty but with whom she generally has a distant relationship. She lives alone in a drab, sparsely furnished apartment in Tokyo-3. Near the end of the series, Shinji comments that her apartment is very similar to the place where Ritsuko said Rei was born.[6] Rei is also shown to have an interest in psychology and genetics, including reading a German book on the latter subject.

Misato is a young woman with long, dark purple hair that is wavy with a side-parted fringe and dark brown eyes. She wears a black sleeveless flapper dress with a cross necklace, a fashionable red jacket with stylized panels, green socks, and black boots, but wears more outfits throughout the series. Misato is known to be a very attractive woman, as she is repeatedly called "baby" by Ikari's male classmates throughout the series.

While at work, Misato is very professional and capable, which is in stark contrast to her life at home. Before Shinji Ikari arrived, her living space was a complete mess. She does not know how to cook for herself and subsists exclusively on fast food (Shinji and Ritsuko Akagi often find her disgusting due to the combination of dishes such as ramen and curry). She also drinks large quantities of beer, drinking it first thing in the morning to start her day (later in the series, she apparently switches to canned coffee as a supplement). She also smokes, though only occasionally and only during chaotic events. Misato's father also had a major influence on her personality. Like Gendo, he was distant, and as a child, Misato felt that she hated him for abandoning her. For most of the series, Misato has no apparent problem with displaying and emphasizing her femininity, and enjoys the attention it brings her. She included a photograph of herself with the NERV materials sent to Shinji when he was summoned to Tokyo-3. In the photograph, she is wearing a revealing outfit with an arrow pointing to her breasts and a caption that translates into English as "Please note" in the Platinum Edition subtitles and "Please note the cleavage" in the manga. In the second volume of the manga, Shinji returns home from school to find the apartment unlocked and Misato in the shower; he thinks to himself, "This isn't safe... anyone could come in!" Kensuke Aida and Toji Suzuhara (Shinji's friend) develop crushes on Misato, showing her attention, which she seems to enjoy. First Lieutenant Makoto Hyuga (Misato's subordinate) also falls in love with her (though, unlike Toji and Kensuke, his feelings are genuine, as shown in End of Evangelion). He often risks his life and job to provide Misato with confidential information, and agrees
