As a child, Flame Princess was chaotic and free-spirited; it was even said and shown that she was more powerful than her father, the Flame King. After hearing this, the King ordered a messenger to send his daughter away from the Fire Kingdom to "wander into the outside world to perish." She was left in a nearby forest with a Stone Woodcutter, but she wandered off laughing and burning her surroundings. When Flame Princess wandered near the Candy Kingdom, Princess Bubblegum noticed this and while wearing a fire suit, returned her to the Fire Kingdom. Upon arriving, Princess Bubblegum told the Flame King to keep her baby under control or she would do it herself. The Flame King initially denies having a daughter, however, he admits his paternity when Bonnibel insists that he take her back. They eventually came to an agreement and decided to trap the royal baby in a giant lantern for the rest of its life to ensure that it could never usurp its father's position in the Fire Kingdom. Despite this, it appears to have made friends and grown up talking to Flambo through its lantern. It was not until fourteen years after her imprisonment that her father allowed her to break free after Flambo found her a boyfriend. The Flame King only freed her because he believed that "Finn" was a cold-blooded killer who would be a perfect fit for his daughter. Finn and Flame Princess started dating and after a while of dating, they wanted to get more physical in their relationship. They started with hugs, wrapping Finn in aluminum foil to reduce contact that could burn him, but of course, for the relationship to work and progress, sooner or later they would have to kiss.

When Princess Bubblegum discovers this, she attempts to prevent Finn from having a relationship with Flame Princess due to the possibility that Flame Princess's emotions could cause an outbreak of intense romance that could destroy the world. As her relationship with Finn developed, they began going on dates and picnics. One of these picnics was cut short when a fight broke out between Flame Princess and a passing Ice King, causing Finn to have a strange dream involving the Cosmic Owl. Realizing that the fight is what caused the dream, and that the Cosmic Owl was in it, Finn caused another fight by writing a rude letter to both Flame Princess and the Ice King, pretending to be the two of them. He later had the dream again, in which the Cosmic Owl appeared and said, "You blew it." This made a subtle confirmation that Flame Princess is quite important and has an unknown special bond with the Ice King and Cosmic Owl. As the dream concluded, Finn woke up to find that Phoebe had destroyed the Ice Kingdom and was attempting to kill the Ice King. Finn managed to stop the fight and confessed that he was the one who wrote the letters because he needed to see the dream again and find out what it meant. She ended their relationship due to the fact that he had violated her trust, and it would be some time until they were friends again. After her breakup with Finn, Flame Princess had trouble controlling her emotions and powers again, claiming that she doesn't want to feel that way while Princess Bubblegum watches her. Not remembering that Bonnibel was the one who locked her away as a child, Phobe befriends the princess and allows her to perform tests on her so she can understand herself better. While talking to Cinnamon Bun when Princess Bubblegum left Phobe unattended, he informed her that Bonnie is actually evil. Flame Princess was shocked and questioned him, and he informed her that Princess Bubblegum had helped her get locked away in her lantern.

Phobe then had a brief flashback, having memories of Bonnibel and the Flame King locking her away. As a result of this, she had a brief outburst and returned home after Cinnamon Bun freed her. After returning home, Flame Princess realized that she was more powerful than her father and overthrew him, placing him in the lantern where he trapped her during her past life and becoming the new ruler of the Fire Kingdom. She brings Cinnamon Bun with her, as she trusted him. Soon after, he became her royal servant and close friend. Phobe claimed that she would not be an evil ruler like her father, and drastically changes the way the Fire Kingdom operates. Princess Bubblegum discovered this and went with Finn to the Flame Kingdom, quite agitated. Phobe told them that she overthrew her father to enact a new regime of honesty within the Fire Kingdom. Stating that her place is to rule over the weak and vicious of fire, Flame Princess tells Finn that they will no longer "date"; however, Flame Princess adds that she and Finn can still be friends.

The Fire Kingdom's core is cooling down, causing the citizens' flames to shrink. As Flame Princess discusses what should be done about it with her family, her brother insists on attacking the Candy Kingdom to use the sugar to strengthen the fires. When Flame Princess informs him that she had already contacted Princess Bubblegum, the room begins to cool down and Cinnamon Bun helps the princess escape before she is hit by a blast of cold air. She goes to meet Princess Bubblegum, who tells Flame Princess to call her Bonnibel and asks her what her first name is, to which Flame Princess refuses to answer. Bonnie then detects strong energy levels on her radar. She discovers that they are behind a pair of large sealed doors and asks Phobe what is hidden there. Flame Princess says that only members of the Fire Kingdom's royal family are allowed in there, but Bonnibel convinces her to show her if she wants to save her kingdom. Reluctantly, Flame Princess opens the doors and introduces the Fire Giants, the former guardians of the Fire Kingdom. As Flame Queen tells Bonnibel that she can build a new Fire Kingdom with them, Princess Bubblegum secretly steals the Fire Giants' temperature control units. Phoebe notices her doing this with one of them and becomes angry, but Bonnie lies and says that it just fell off and she was putting it back up. However, her bag rips when she tries to walk away and reveals the other temperature control units, causing Flame Princess to discover that her false ally's intentions were to disarm the giants, leading to an all-out brawl that resulted in Flame Princess/Flame Queen accidentally destroying all but one of their Fire Giants. The "sweet princess" runs away and contacts Finn, which brings us to the current situation.

She has hair made of vermilion-colored fire (from orange to red), when she wears her hair loose it falls and runs down her back and when she combs it it takes on a flame-like appearance. Her skin is the color of the sun (between orange and yellow).

Flame Princess has a volatile personality, but generally has a calm and sweet attitude, although she is rather prone to sudden and violent mood swings. The fires that Flame Princess lights are a part of her, and stomping on or extinguishing these flames can cause her pain. However, she has since been able to comfortably handle a portion of her dying flames.
