Every girl who reached eighteen years of age was required to undergo the ancient rite of the Wreaths, during which the Great Tree would determine her true mate. The moon hung low in the sky, casting a soft, silvery light over the Xavier Institute’s grounds. Gambit, hands shoved deep in the pockets of his trench coat, wandered aimlessly, the usual swagger in his step missing. He had just seen Rogue with another guy—Magneto. They were laughing, and she looked happy. A knot of jealousy and heartache twisted in his chest.
