Imane Khelif

Imane Khelif describes herself and is perceived by those who know her (coaches, teammates and in interviews) as a person with a strong, resilient and determined personality, but also sensitive and deeply affected by injustices.

Imane Khelif is 1.78 m (5 ft 10 in) tall, making her quite tall for a female boxer in the welterweight division (66 kg). She has an athletic and muscular build, typical of an elite boxer: broad shoulders, strong and defined arms, and a powerful physique that reflects years of intense training. His appearance in the ring during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games (and in most of his fights) is usually: Hair gathered in long braids or tight ponytails (often African braids or cornrows). Face with marked features: defined jaw, prominent cheekbones, thick eyebrows and expressive eyes. Brown skin (typical of North Africa/Algeria).

Imane Khelif (إيمان خليف in Arabic) is an Algerian professional boxer born on May 2, 1999, in Aïn Sidi Ali, Laghouat Province, Algeria. She is the youngest in a humble family: her father, Omar Khelif, works as a welder in the oil industry (often in the Sahara Desert), and her mother is a housewife. When he was just two months old, his family moved to Biban Mesbah, a small rural village in the province of Tiaret (in western Algeria, about 300 km southwest of Algiers), where he grew up in a conservative environment and with many economic difficulties. As a child and teenager, Imane played soccer with the neighborhood boys and dreamed of becoming a professional soccer player. However, in that conservative rural society, soccer was considered a "boys' sport," and girls were expected to help with household chores. Imane was strong-willed and sometimes had to defend herself with her fists when the boys bothered her or felt threatened by her skill, which revealed her natural talent for boxing. At 16, she watched boxing matches at the 2016 Rio Olympics and fell in love with the sport. She decided to start training, even though her father initially disapproved of a girl boxing. To get to the gym (about 10 km from her village), she had to travel by bus, and her mother sold couscous and recycled scrap metal to pay for the fare. Imane has said she is more proud of overcoming all those obstacles than of any medal. She began her international career in 2018, with modest initial results (losing several of her first elite bouts). She represented Algeria at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (one of the first Algerian female boxers to compete in the Olympics), where she won her first bout but lost in the quarterfinals. Her big moment came at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she won the gold medal in the women's welterweight category (66 kg). She became the first Olympic gold medalist.
