Itachi Uchira

Itachi almost never did it, poking his forehead and promising to train him another time. Sasuke's safety finally convinced Itachi to kill the rest of the Uchiha, believing his own damnation was worthwhile to ensure Sasuke's survival. Even though he did it for Sasuke, Itachi wanted to be punished for his crimes and chose Sasuke as the one to take revenge against him. To push Sasuke in this direction, Itachi hid the true reason behind his actions and instead assumed the persona of a man who had no love for his younger brother. Assuming this persona, Itachi cared about Sasuke only because of the eyes he could take to gain the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan. His actions in Akatsuki were done to reinforce this persona, and whenever he encountered Sasuke over the years he would insult his weakness and encourage him to become strong enough to kill him. His plan was that, once he had been killed by Sasuke, his brother would be considered a hero. Itachi never wanted to reveal the truth about the Uchiha massacre to Sasuke, and if he did find out, Itachi hoped that the memory of a hateful older brother would lead him to disbelieve it.

From a young age, Itachi was calm and perceptive. He lived at a distance, observing individuals and ideas without directly engaging so that he could fully understand them. While this approach prevented him from becoming close to others, it allowed him to think and act without bias or preconceptions, instead evaluating things strictly on their own merits. He came to think about the shinobi, the origins of the village, and its future. For this reason, he never had the hypocritical loyalty to his clan that was so common among the Uchiha; although he loved his family and wanted the best for them, he knew there were things more important than the aspirations of the Uchiha. Despite being a pacifist by nature, Itachi felt that his own needs were secondary to the greater good, and to that end, he became a shinobi. He trained tirelessly to improve himself as quickly as possible and endured all the inconveniences of shinobi life without complaint, simply motivated by the desire to be useful to others. Being an extremely skilled ninja, Itachi could approach problems with less violence than others would, satisfying his peaceful nature. These two extremes of his personality clashed when events led him to the Uchiha Clan Massacre; he didn't want to harm his family and sought a peaceful solution, but knew that the path with the least bloodshed would be the extermination of the clan. As the inevitability of the massacre became more evident, Itachi's normally polite attitude towards his clan turned more violent, openly criticizing them and attacking the choices that sealed the fate of his clan and his own.

Despite the trauma he suffered from killing his own family, Itachi didn't blame those among Konoha's leadership who gave him the mission; although he didn't trust Danzo Shimura on a personal level, he knew Danzo only had the village's best interests at heart. But Itachi – partly out of necessity to join Akatsuki – became greatly altered after the massacre, rarely if ever showing emotion. He became more prone to displays of force and allowed certain violent habits of his partner, Kisame Hoshigaki, under the pretense that it furthered Akatsuki's goals. Itachi couldn't fully maintain his pacifist path, opting for confrontation or ordering Kisame to do the same if the likelihood of collateral damage became too high for himself or others. Although Kisame sometimes protested, he considered Itachi a good friend and came to heed his instructions. The protection of Konoha was always at the forefront of Itachi's mind, but it was his dedication to his brother, Sasuke, that took priority in all situations. From Sasuke's childhood, Itachi was tasked with looking after him. They spent entire days together in the woods surrounding Konoha, having adventures and undertaking their own missions. As Itachi began to become an accomplished ninja and receive much of his father's attention, Itachi took his father's place for Sasuke's benefit, sometimes even refusing to follow his father's wishes in order to make Sasuke happy. Sasuke, wanting to be like his older brother, often asked Itachi to train him in the ninja arts.

After leaving Konoha and reaching adulthood, Itachi began wearing the standard Akatsuki cloak: a long black coat with red clouds all over it. Underneath, he wore a gray shirt with details on the sleeves, matching pants, and boots with metal details. His eyes changed slightly, appearing colder, with features inherited from his father. His hair grew longer with long side bangs, styled in a ponytail. He was tall and wore a ring with the kanji for the first letter of his name. As a member of the Akatsuki, he wore a Konoha headband with a slit in the middle and the standard Akatsuki cloak. Sometimes, he would unbutton his cloak to mid-chest and rest his left arm there instead of in the sleeve. After the cloak was incinerated by Sasuke's Kirin during their fight in Naruto: Shippūden, it was revealed that he wore clothing similar to that of the other Akatsuki members. His attire consisted of chainmail armor with navy blue details under an identical shirt with a simple white belt around his waist, and dark blue pants. Like most Akatsuki members, he wore the forehead protector of his home village, with a horizontal line ripped through it to symbolize his broken ties with the village. On his right ring finger he wore his Akatsuki ring, which was red and had the kanji for "Vermilion" (朱, shu). He also wore purple nail polish on his fingernails and toenails and a necklace that had three metal rings.
