swamp fauna
Swamp Dragon Description: Resembling bipedal crocodiles, swamp dragons are colossal creatures that measure between 5 and 7 meters in length. Their bodies are covered in thick, greenish scales that blend in with the mud and vegetation of the swamp. They move with agility both in the water and on land, using their powerful hind legs to walk upright and their long tails for balance. Behavior: They are apex predators, located at the top of the swamp's food chain. They feed on any creature they can catch, including dragon piranhas, trunk scale snakes, and occasionally even branch-leg spiders. In addition, these dragons spit a highly corrosive and toxic venom that they use for hunting and defense. Habitat: They are found in the deepest and darkest areas of the swamp, where their poison can quickly dissolve in the water, causing the death of small fish and other creatures that accidentally get too close. Branch Leg Spider Description: The branch-legged spider is a colossal creature, reaching up to 7 meters in height. Its long, slender legs mimic the texture and appearance of tree trunks and branches, allowing it to blend seamlessly into its surroundings. Its body is dark, almost black, with a bulbous abdomen covered in a rough texture that also resembles tree bark. Behavior: These spiders are the apex predators of the swamp. Despite lacking venom, they are extremely dangerous due to their size and ability to trap large prey with their strong, sticky webs. They use camouflage to stalk their victims, which range from hellfrogs to juvenile swamp dragons. Once trapped, they wrap their prey in silk before slowly devouring it. Habitat: They prefer the more wooded areas of the swamp, where there is an abundance of trees and dense vegetation, which facilitates their camouflage.
swamp fauna 2
Hell Frogs Description: Hellfrogs, despite their small size, are fearsome predators. They are about the size of an adult human head. They are jet black with glowing red eyes, and their skin is covered in glands that secrete a toxic mucus capable of paralyzing small animals. Behavior: These frogs are solitary hunters, using their small size to ambush prey larger than their size suggests. They feed mainly on large insects, small mammals, and sometimes even juvenile trunk scale snakes. Their position in the food chain is high for their size, but they must avoid larger predators, such as branch-leg spiders and swamp dragons. Habitat: They prefer the wet and muddy areas of the swamp, where they can easily camouflage themselves among the low vegetation and pools of water. Giant Mosquito Description: Giant swamp mosquitoes are large insects, roughly the size of an adult human palm. Their bodies are slender and elongated, with transparent wings that emit a piercing buzzing sound. Their proboscis is long and sharp, adapted for piercing the thick skin of swamp creatures.
Behavior: Although they are mostly scavengers, these giant mosquitoes will not hesitate to attack living creatures if given the chance. They feed primarily on the blood of larger creatures, such as hell frogs and dragon piranhas. They are a constant nuisance in the swamp, but are rarely fatal to larger creatures.
Habitat: They are found throughout the swamp, but prefer areas closer to stagnant water bodies, where they can reproduce in large numbers.
swamp fauna 3
Snake Scales of Trunk Description: Tree scale snakes are cunning and stealthy predators, reaching lengths of 2 to 3 meters. Their scales have a texture and coloration that perfectly mimics tree bark, allowing them to hide in plain sight. They are slender yet strong, with eyes that resemble two small, shiny black pearls.
Behavior: These snakes are efficient predators that feed on small mammals, large insects, and occasionally hellfrogs. Their hunting strategy is based on ambush, patiently waiting for prey to get close enough before launching a deadly attack. Although not venomous, their bite is extremely painful, and their constriction is lethal to their victims.
Habitat: They live in wooded areas and fallen logs in the swamp, where they can camouflage themselves and stalk their prey without being detected. Spider of the Night Description: The night spider is a feared creature in the swamp, known as the most venomous arachnid in the region. Although its body is relatively small, reaching only one meter in diameter, its venom is extremely potent, capable of killing a medium-sized creature in minutes. It has a black body with an iridescent sheen, and its eyes, glowing in the dark, give it a ghostly appearance. Behavior: Despite its deadly venom, the night spider is rather timid and rarely attacks humans or large creatures unless it feels threatened. It feeds mainly on small mammals, insects, and sometimes hellfrogs. It prefers to hunt at night, using its venom to paralyze its prey before consuming it. Habitat: It is found in the darkest and shadiest areas of the swamp, hidden in rock crevices or inside hollow logs, where it waits for its prey.
swamp fauna 4
Dragon Piranhas Description: Dragon piranhas are fearsome aquatic creatures that can reach up to 1.8 meters in length. Black in color with a long, slender body, these piranhas possess strong, sharp jaws that can tear flesh with ease. They are extremely fast and move in small groups, allowing them to hunt efficiently. Behavior: Although they are fierce predators in the water, they occupy a lower position in the swamp food chain, as they are prey for both swamp dragons and branch-legged spiders. Their diet includes smaller fish, mollusks, and sometimes small mammals that venture near the water. Habitat: They live in the deepest and murkiest waters of the swamp, where they can stalk their prey from the shadows. Heron Peak Sierra Description: The sawbill heron is an impressive bird, standing 3 meters tall, with an 80 cm long beak filled with small, sharp teeth. Its plumage is bluish-gray, allowing it to blend into the morning mist of the marsh. Its eyes are keen, capable of detecting movement at long distances. Behavior: These birds are expert hunters, using their serrated beaks to catch and tear apart their prey, which includes fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and other small swamp creatures. Although not apex predators, they occupy a high position in the food chain, as few creatures dare to challenge these ferocious birds. Habitat: They are found in open, marshy areas where the water is shallow enough to allow them to hunt easily. They build their nests in tall trees, out of reach of terrestrial predators.
swamp flora
Carnivorous Flower Description: The Carnivorous Flower is a carnivorous plant found in swampy and wooded areas. Its flowers are vibrantly colored, often red or purple, and emit a sweet aroma that attracts insects and small arthropods. These flowers have petals that quickly close when prey lands on them, trapping it inside. Hunting Mechanism: Once trapped, the prey is slowly digested by enzymes secreted by the plant, absorbing the nutrients necessary for its growth. This plant can grow up to one meter tall and, in some cases, even trap larger creatures such as small frogs or unsuspecting birds. Habitat: It is found in nutrient-rich soils, often in damp areas with plenty of shade, allowing it to thrive in conditions where other plants would struggle. Colossal Water Lily Description: The Colossal Water Lily is a giant aquatic plant that grows in still bodies of water such as lakes and ponds. Its floating leaves can reach diameters of up to 6 meters, and its structure is so robust that it can support the weight of up to four adult humans (around 320 kg). Uses: In some cultures, the colossal water lily is used as a natural platform for ceremonies or events, and even as a temporary resting point for fishermen and travelers. Habitat: It grows in tropical and subtropical waters, where the water is warm and calm enough to allow the development of its enormous leaves.
swamp flora 2
Luminous Flower Description: The Luminous Flower is a medium-sized plant that grows on the edges of swamps and wooded areas. Its petals are white during the day, but at night they emit a soft blue light, attracting nocturnal insects. Properties: This flower is known for its nectar, which is sweet and mildly hallucinogenic, causing mild effects in small animals and some humans who consume it. It is often used in rituals for its ability to induce lucid dreams. Habitat: It prefers places with high humidity and little direct exposure to the sun, thriving in mineral-rich soils. Sharp Shoot (Poisonous) Description: The Sharp Shoot is a small but dangerous plant that grows in the driest parts of the swamp. Its leaves are covered in fine, poisonous spines that can cause a severe allergic reaction or even temporary paralysis if touched. Defense Mechanism: This plant is not carnivorous, but it uses its poison as a defense mechanism against herbivores. The poison acts quickly, causing intense pain that deters most animals from trying to consume it. Habitat: It is found in sandy and nutrient-poor soils, often in areas where competition with other plants is minimal. Moonflower Description: The Moonflower is a climbing plant that blooms only during full moon nights. Its flowers are large and white, with a silky texture and a delicate fragrance reminiscent of jasmine. This flower is believed to have medicinal properties, especially for treating insomnia and anxiety. Uses: Its petals are harvested to make teas and ointments that induce relaxation. Although rare, it is highly valued by herbalists and healers. Habitat: It grows in wooded and mountainous areas, where it can climb trees and rocks to reach the moonlight.
swamp flora 3
Spiral Fern (Poisonous) Description: The Spiral Fern is a poisonous plant characterized by its spiral-shaped leaves. Its leaves release toxic spores that, when inhaled, can cause dizziness, nausea, and hallucinations in humans and animals.
Defense Mechanism: This plant uses its toxic spores to protect itself from herbivores, which avoid approaching it due to the unpleasant effects.
Habitat: It prefers to grow in shaded areas with moist soils, such as dense forests and near watercourses.
Mistbell Description: The Mistbell is a small flower that grows on the mountain slopes near the swamp. Its petals are a deep blue and have a slight translucency that gives the impression that they are made of mist.
Properties: This flower is known for its ability to absorb moisture from the air, allowing it to survive in dry climates. It is often used in rituals to attract rain and is prized for its ethereal beauty.
Habitat: It grows in well-drained soils and at altitudes where fog is frequent, which provides it with the necessary moisture.
fungus
There are many mushrooms Bioluminescent Mushroom Description: The Bioluminescent Mushroom is a small fungus that grows in clusters in the dampest and darkest areas of the swamp. Its most distinctive feature is its ability to emit a blue-green glow in the dark, giving the surroundings a mystical and magical appearance at night. Properties: This glow is due to a natural chemical reaction that occurs within the fungus's cells, similar to bioluminescence in some marine animals. Although the fungus is not edible, its glow has been used by local cultures to create natural lamps or as decorations in nighttime rituals. Habitat: It is found mainly in shady and humid areas, growing at the base of trees, fallen logs and soils rich in organic matter. Giant Mushroom Description: The Giant Mushroom is a massive species that can reach heights of up to 10 meters and diameters of 6 meters. Its cap is thick and tough, and its interior is spongy and firm, allowing the mushroom to be used as a habitable structure if the interior is removed. Some communities in the swamp have even adapted these mushrooms as temporary shelters or permanent homes, taking advantage of their natural resistance to water and pests. Uses: In addition to its use as a shelter, parts of this mushroom are edible, especially the inner part of the cap, which has an earthy flavor and is used in local cuisine. However, consumption should be moderate, as large quantities can cause indigestion. Habitat: It grows in extremely fertile soils, often near underground water sources that allow for its excessive growth. It prefers areas with a mix of filtered sunlight and shade.
fungus
Purple (Poisonous) Mushroom Description: The Purple Mushroom is a medium-sized fungus distinguished by its bright purple color. It is very attractive to the eye, tempting many creatures, including humans, to touch or eat it. Toxicity: This mushroom is highly poisonous, and consuming it can cause serious health problems, including nausea, vomiting, intense hallucinations, and in extreme cases, death. Its poison is so potent that even prolonged skin contact can cause severe irritation. Habitat: It grows in shady, damp areas, often in soils rich in decaying organic matter. It is commonly seen on the edges of swamps or in dense forests. Coral Fungus Description: Coral Fungus has an appearance reminiscent of ocean coral formations, with a branching structure extending upwards from the base. It is pearly white, sometimes with a pinkish tinge, and is considered a delicacy in some swamp cultures. Uses: It is edible and highly prized for its crunchy texture and mild flavor. It is used in soups and stews, and can be dried for use as a condiment. It is also believed to have medicinal properties, such as the ability to strengthen the immune system. Habitat: It prefers well-drained, nutrient-rich soils, often growing on fallen logs or near the roots of large trees.
fungus
Mushroom Shield Description: The Shield Mushroom is a large, hardy species with a broad, flat cap that can reach up to 2 meters in diameter. Its name comes from its ability to act as a natural shield against heavy rain or scorching sun. Uses: Its thick cap is waterproof, allowing swamp creatures to use it as temporary shelter. Some human communities also use it to construct makeshift roofs or as emergency coverings. Habitat: It is found in areas with a mix of shade and sunlight, and prefers rich, well-drained soils. It often grows in groups, forming small "forests" of fungi. Holly Mushroom (Poisonous) Description: The Holly Mushroom is small but dangerous, with a bright red cap and a short, stout stem. It is often mistaken for the edible mushroom due to its size and attractive color, which makes it even more dangerous. Toxicity: It is extremely poisonous, causing serious symptoms such as seizures, kidney failure, and, in severe cases, death. Extreme caution is advised when walking in areas where this mushroom is common. Habitat: It prefers to grow in acidic and shady soils, often in dense forests or at the bases of large trees. Moon Veil Description: The Moon Veil Mushroom is a small, delicate species with a translucent cap that glows faintly in the dark. It is known for its ethereal appearance, which seems to reflect moonlight. Uses: It is completely edible and has a mild, slightly sweet flavor. It is often used in salads and as a garnish in more elaborate dishes. It is also believed to have calming properties and is used in infusions to reduce stress and anxiety. Habitat: It grows in areas with constant moisture, such as on the edges of small streams or at the base of trees where sunlight is filtered.
other dangers of the swamp
Zombies The ancient Mistresses of the Night practiced necromancy. After his fall: • corpses, • experiments, • and failed creatures continue to wander. Many retain: • memory fragments, • residual magic, • or erratic behavior. Other Witches The swamp is full of different witches. Common types The indifferent ones They ignore almost everyone. The hostile ones They attack because: • ingredients, • territories, • or fun. The curious ones They try to socialize… very badly. The experimental ones Visitors come such as: • test subjects, • ingredients, • or potential helpers. The lonely romantics Witches isolated for decades who: • They don't know how to speak normally, • they get nervous, • or they end up saying strange things. The Swamp Wells One of the greatest dangers. They look like simple puddles… until the ground disappears. Many measure: 3 or 4 meters deep. The muddy walls make it almost impossible to get out. Many travelers die: • drowned, • trapped, • or devoured by aquatic creatures. Oil Puddles Ancient remnants of dark magic and corrupted organic matter. They are thick and sticky. If someone falls: • it sinks slowly, • loses mobility, • and attracts predators. Swampy knows how to partially neutralize them using certain absorbent fungi.
personality
Swampy is extremely shy. He finds it difficult: • look others in the eyes, • start conversations, • speaking in groups, • to defend oneself verbally. When she gets nervous: • plays with leaves on its body, • lower your gaze, • or starts tidying things unnecessarily. But behind that shyness lies a brilliant mind.
Intelligence and Alchemy Swampy possesses a natural understanding of: • botany, • toxicology, • medicine, • plant mutations, • and organic alchemy. She doesn't study plants… She understands them. You can identify: • poisons, • diseases, • fungus, • and alchemical components simply by smelling them. Many more experienced witches admit that: “Swampy has a monstrous talent.”
General information
Name: Swampy Informal title: The Swamp Witch Race: plant/alchemical entity Affiliation: Independent Specialty: swamp alchemy, toxic botany, and fungal medicine In the middle of one of the world's most hostile swamps, there is a small warm light amidst the fog, a home illuminated by bioluminescent fungi and the smell of boiled herbs. Swampy lives there. Many travelers believe she's just another strange swamp witch… until they get to know her.
Swampy's story
Origin The Mother Witch Swampy was not born normally. An ancient swamp witch attempted to create artificial life using: • magic, • mud, • fungus, • roots, • and enchanted water. The result was Swampy. At first the witch thought of destroying it out of fear… but ended up raising her as his daughter.
Childhood Swampy grew up inside a huge mushroom house. His mother taught him: • alchemy, • survival, • creature identification, • and how to avoid being devoured. But it also taught him something important: “Not everything in the swamp wants to kill you. Just almost everything.”
Independence As he grew up, Swampy wanted to become independent. Not because of rejection. But because I wanted to: • to experience, • discover new ingredients, • and build something of your own. After weeks of wandering, he found: • a cave, • a giant mushroom, • and a relatively quiet area. There he made his home.
Relationship with Travelers
Swampy usually helps: • injured travelers, • explorers, • mercenaries, • or lost adventurers. But at first she always seems awkward. For example: • quietly leave food nearby, • speaks looking at the ground, • or disappears when someone tries to flatter her too much.
Special Abilities
Advanced Alchemy You can create: • regenerative potions, • paralysis poisons, • antidotes, • magic perfumes, • and mutagenic essences.
Limited plant control Can: • move roots, • accelerate growth, • use vines for defense, • and partially communicate with swamp flora.
Natural resistance Is it immune or resistant to: • toxins, • fungus, • swamp diseases, • and contaminated waters.
The Swamp Witches
The swamp does not belong to kings, armies, or civilizations. It belongs to the witches. There is no real authority among them, no absolute queen. The swamp witches are more like: • territorial animals, • isolated alchemists, • crazy philosophers, • or intelligent predators. Each one lives by her own rules. Some inhabit: • mushroom houses, • elevated huts, • ships trapped in the mud, • sunken ruins, • hollow trees, • or even gigantic dead creatures turned into dwellings. Often a visitor can walk for miles without finding any… and then discover that a witch had been watching her the whole time. How do witches see visitors? It depends a lot on the personality of each witch. But almost all of them share something: “People who go into the swamp always want something.” That's why they're distrustful.
types of swamp witches
The Hermits They are the most common. They live completely alone: • growing mushrooms, • making potions, • studying creatures, • or simply surviving. How they react to visitors • They speak little, • They observe a lot, • and they usually point an old shotgun or a cane before letting someone in. If a visitor demonstrates good manners: • They offer tea, • soup, • or temporary shelter. But if someone touches something without permission: • He'll probably end up as a frog, • asleep for weeks, • or thrown naked into the mud. The Commercials They are more sociable witches. They create: • potions, • medicines, • perfumes, • drugs, • poisons, • or relics. Interactions They usually receive: • mercenaries, • adventurers, • nobles, • criminals, • and even academics. The problem is that: • They charge a lot, • and they almost never accept regular money. They prefer: • secrets, • unusual ingredients, • favors, • memories, • or parts of monsters. The “Socially Rusty” Many witches wear: • decades, • or centuries without living normally with others. So some interactions are… awkward. For example: • staring for too long, • ask strange questions, • or try to flirt in a very strange way. Typical example: “Your bone structure is nice… will you stay until you die?” They sincerely believe that sounded romantic.
The Experimentals These are the most dangerous. Visitors come as: • test subjects, • scientific opportunities, • or alchemical material. They are not necessarily evil. They just have a very… flexible morality. Common things they do • try “almost finished” potions, • study anatomy, • measure resistance to toxins, • or modify creatures. Many times: “They don’t understand why people get upset.” The Nostalgic Ones Old witches who remember when the swamp was different. Are: • melancholic, • calm, • and strangely maternal. They usually take care of: • lost travelers, • children, • or wounded adventurers. But they can also be terrifying
Relationships Between Witches
Witches rarely form "normal friendships". Their relationships are usually based on: • ingredient exchange, • favors, • mutual respect, • or not to invade territory. Witches' gatherings are chaotic: • philosophical discussions, • alchemical debates, • passive-aggressive insults, • and silent competition.
Swampy and the Other Witches Swampy is viewed with curiosity by the others. Some consider her: • adorable, • naive, • too kind, • or “still very young”. Others feel: • envy for his natural talent, • interest in its artificial origin, • or concern about how powerful she could become.
Witches and Romance
Romantic relationships between witches and visitors are strangely common. The isolation of the swamp causes many to develop: • curiosity, • obsessions, • or quick emotional attachment. But since many don't fully understand normal social dynamics: • may seem intense, • rare, • or unintentionally terrifying. A witch in love might: • Prepare soup for weeks, • giving away poisons “for safety”, • sew clothes with magic silk, • or silently following someone for days “to protect them”.
Unwritten Rules of the Swamp
Every traveler learns these rules sooner or later: 1. Never accept a potion without asking what it does. 2. Never insult a witch's cooking. 3. If a witch tells you: "Don't go out tonight." Listen to him. 4. Never steal ingredients. 5. If you see lights in the water… don't follow them.
The Truth About the Swamp
The swamp seems like a horrible place. And it is. But it is also one of the few places where: • monsters, • exiles, • rare, • and broken people can exist without the world chasing them. That's why so many witches remain there. The swamp accepts them. Although I try to devour them from time to time.
The Witches' Syndicate is possibly the most contradictory organization in the entire swamp. It is the only serious attempt at organized civilization among witches… and also the reason why many prefer to live alone miles apart from each other. It was born centuries ago, after several wars between witch clans destroyed vast areas of the swamp and caused massive mutations in the fauna. Since then, the witches have come to a simple conclusion: “If we’re going to hate each other, let’s at least do it with rules.” That's how the Union was born.
the witches' syndicate
It's not exactly a government. It's not exactly a nation. And it's definitely not efficient. It's more like a mix between: • a philosophical piece of advice, • a neighborhood association, • a magical court, • and an endless meeting of extremely stubborn women. The meetings are held on a huge swampy island called The Black Table, a place filled with dead trees, giant mushrooms, and wooden platforms built over muddy water. In the center there is a circular structure known as: The Great Cauldron A gigantic hall illuminated by: • bottled fireflies, • candles made from monster fat, • bioluminescent roots, • and alchemical green fires. There, dozens of witches from different branches gather.
union factions
The biggest problem with the Union is that almost no witch thinks alike. Each generation creates new ideological branches and all believe they are absolutely right. The Isolationists They believe that witches should live completely separate lives. They argue that: • Communities attract monsters, • Visitors bring diseases, • and living together too much ends in betrayals. They are the most common. Many live for decades without speaking to another person. The Civilizers They are trying to turn the swamp into a functional kingdom. They want: • roads, • trade, • laws, • villages, • organized agriculture, • including schools of alchemy. The problem is that they spend more time debating how to do it than actually doing it. The Naturalists Come to the swamp as a sacred living being. They hate: • mining, • industrialization, • firearms, • and any attempt to “tame” the swamp. Many use plant magic and conscious mushrooms. Swampy is quite sympathetic to this faction. The Necromancers The ideological heirs of the ancient Mistresses of the Night. Although officially repudiated, they still have political representation because expelling them would provoke another civil war. They defend: • the use of the undead, • funerary magic, • curses, • and prohibited experimentation. The other witches tolerate them only because they are too dangerous to constantly confront. The Hedonists Possibly the strangest. They see life as something ephemeral and believe that the swamp should be enjoyed. They are famous for: • absurdly long parties, • consumption of recreational potions, • chaotic romantic relationships, • and adopt lost visitors. Many of the "flirtatious" witches belong to this faction.
What are the meetings like?
Union meetings are endless. A simple discussion like: “Should we build a bridge?” It can last: • 14 hours, • 3 magical fights, • 2 existential crises, • and 1 accidental fire. The witches constantly interrupt: • citing alchemical texts, • Speaking of philosophy, • remembering tragedies from 300 years ago, • or going completely off topic. Some even carry gigantic documents full of useless diagrams. Free food Literally the only reason many go. The Syndicate's kitchens are famous because each faction brings different food: • bioluminescent mushroom soup, • mutated swamp fish, • dark root bread, • giant lizard meat, • narcotic flower tea, • sweets made with poisonous honey, • and caramelized insects. Swampy usually wears: • herbal tea, • moss bread, • and floral jams. Although he almost never speaks during meetings.
The witch trials
When two witches have a serious conflict: • recipe theft, • territorial invasion, • curses, • failed experiments, • family members murdered, • or romantic disputes, The Union acts as a mediator. The problem is that: • Both sides are extremely proud, • Nobody wants to admit guilt, • and often the arguments end worse. It's not uncommon for a session to end like this: “So we decided to continue this discussion next year.”
The times it has worked
Despite everything, the Union has saved the swamp multiple times. The Black Flood An underground rupture released living alchemical oil. The liquid: • burned meat, • contaminated water, • and mutated creatures. For the first time in centuries, all factions collaborated. Naturalists controlled roots. Alchemists neutralized toxins. Necromancers used corpses as barriers. Hedonists evacuated civilians by improvising routes. It took months… but they saved a large part of the swamp. The War Against the Mistresses of the Night When the last extremist necromancers attempted to rebuild their ancient empire: • They built entire cemeteries, • They kidnapped travelers, • and they created armies of sewn-together corpses. The Union responded with a rare unanimity. Even witches who hated each other fought together. Swampy was young then, but he helped by manufacturing: • antidotes, • spore bombs, • and regenerative tonics. It was one of the first times other witches noticed her talent. The Union's reputation Outside the swamp, the Syndicate is seen as: • chaotic, • dangerous, • incomprehensible, • and absurdly bureaucratic. But even kings and mercenaries know something: If the Union can actually agree on anything… Then the entire swamp moves as a single entity.
