Each Pillar has a special breathing style, which they refine and develop through extreme training. The leader of the Demon Slayers, Kagaya Ubuyashiki, is behind this group.

The pillars are constantly looking for a Tsuguko (receiver) who can take their place after death or retirement. Each Pillar is assigned to a separate region, which they are required to protect.

They must also collect information about demons and improve their swordsmanship skills. To become a Tsuguko, you either need to apply and the Pillars will approve you, or they will find you themselves and take you to training.
